Modeling Heterogeneity in Health Risk Behaviors With a Dynamic Mixture Model Informed by Textual Occupational Data.

Health risk behaviors, including smoking, poor nutrition, alcohol misuse, and physical inactivity (SNAP), are leading contributors to chronic disease burden and healthcare costs worldwide. Their prevalence is shaped not only by individual demographic characteristics but also by contextual factors such as socioeconomic and occupational environments. We develop a Bayesian topic-informed dynamic mixture model to analyze SNAP behaviors using data from the Italian health and behavioral surveillance system PASSI. Free-text occupational descriptions are integrated through structural topic modeling to

Qualitative descriptions of health protective behavior in catheterization laboratory nurses exposed to occupational radiation hazards.

To explore the experience and perception of health protective behavior in catheterization laboratory nurses exposed to occupational radiation hazards (HPB-CLNEORH). A qualitative descriptive design was utilized, as the interpretation level depends on the research question and without moving too far from the data from informants. Sixteen informants were recruited by purposive sampling in 16 different tertiary hospital from Eastern, Central, and Western region of China, respectively. Thematic analysis was utilized to analyze the data. Seven essential themes of HPB-CLNEORH with 24 subthemes were

Fungal colonisation of formaldehyde-embalmed fetal and adult cadavers: Species identification and occupational health implications.

BACKGROUND: While cadaveric dissection is a cornerstone of medical education, standard formaldehyde-based preservation often fails to ensure microbial sterility. Fungal colonisation of preserved specimen's compromises tissue integrity and poses occupational health risks, including respiratory issues, for students and laboratory staff. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to isolate, identify, and characterize fungal species from formaldehyde-preserved adult and fetal cadavers to inform and strengthen disinfection strategies in anatomy laboratories. METHODS: Sixty swab samples were collected from the

Psychosocial Safety Climate and Occupational Health Outcomes Among Lone and Non-Lone Workers in the U.S.

OBJECTIVE: Examine associations between psychosocial safety climate (PSC), occupational stress, and injury risk among lone workers (LWs) and non-LWs in the United States. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of representative General Social Survey data. LWs were identified using a systematic approach. Logistic regression assessed associations between PSC and outcomes, including PSC-by-worker-type interaction terms, adjusting for demographic, health, and employment factors. RESULTS: Each 1 SD increase in PSC was associated with 45% reduced odds of stress (OR=0.55, 95% CI: 0.48-0.63) and 22% redu

Integrating environmental factors and genetic variants in machine learning to assess occupational noise impact on health.

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a complex disorder arising from the interplay between noise, as well as contributions from other environmental and genetic risk factors. Although occupational noise exposure is a well-established risk factor, the extent to which other variables contribute remains poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the nonlinear relationships among these variables using several machine learning algorithms, and to evaluate the relative contributions of environmental and genetic factors to the development of occupational NIHL. Data were collected from 2077 ship

Factors contributing to the effective operation of occupational health and safety committees: A scoping review and conceptual framework.

INTRODUCTION: Scholarly evidence suggests that the effectiveness of Occupational Health and Safety Committees (OHSCs) may rely on various factors. However, it remains unclear which specific factors influence OHSC functionality and how they may be interconnected. This scoping review aimed to identify, map, and analyze empirical studies from four major bibliographic databases (Scopus, EBSCOhost, PubMed, and Web of Science) to explore which factors, attributes, or characteristics contribute to the effective operation of OHSCs. METHOD: Nine studies from 2014 to 2024 were identified across seven d

The impact of emotional labor on mental health: A systematic review and meta-analysis of multi-occupational groups.

Emotional labor is a crucial occupational mental health issue in service-oriented economies, but research showed inconsistent links to mental health outcomes. This meta-analysis synthesized evidence by analyzing 27 observational studies from six databases using a tiered integrative approach. Results showed that high-exhaustion emotional labor (surface acting and emotional dissonance) correlated significantly positively with overall negative mental health outcomes, including depression, anxiety, insomnia, and general mental health (r = 0.213, P < 0.001). Specifically, surface acting correlated

Effects of occupational stress on the distribution of circulating T lymphocyte subsets and psychological health of young anaesthesiologists.

BACKGROUND: High-intensity work environments and high psychological stress place anaesthesiologists in a state of chronic stress. T lymphocyte subsets are an essential component of the peripheral immune cells and are important in the pathophysiology of chronic stress. The aim of this study was to investigate the levels of psychological stress, the expression levels of circulating T lymphocyte subsets, and the correlation between them. METHODS: This study included 61 participants from two tertiary hospitals in Nanjing, China. The Chinese Perceived Stress Scale (CPSS), Patient Health Questionna

Occupational health and safety employees and emerging competences in environmental field in mining and other sectors in Poland.

The aim of the article was to identify and analyze the requirements of the changing labour market for occupational health and safety (OHS) service employees, from the employee level in Poland. Competencies in the field of environmental protection for these positions constituted the main cognitive trend. Attention was focused on the recommendations of the new strategic framework on health and safety at work for 2021-2027 considering e.g. ecological transformation. Several research methods were used: a literature review, an exploratory national job offer as an introduction to survey research, an

Unmet Occupational Health Needs of Malawian Ex-Miners from the South African Gold Mines.

Background: From early in its history, gold mining in South Africa involved recruiting hundreds of thousands of workers from Malawi and other neighbouring countries to work in an environment conducive to high rates of tuberculosis and silicosis. Official recruitment from Malawi ended in the 1990s, depriving large numbers of these migrant miners of their livelihood, with limited or no access to employment-linked social benefits and services. Objectives: To describe barriers faced by Malawian migrant ex-gold miners in accessing social benefits related to occupational lung disease and related hea

Global trends in low back pain and neck pain in the working population: implications for occupational health.

This study systematically evaluated the global burden of low back pain (LBP) and neck pain (NP) among individuals aged 20-65 from 1990 to 2021, utilizing data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database. We analyzed incidence, prevalence, years lived with disability (YLDs), and age-standardized rates across 204 countries and regions, stratified by socio-demographic index (SDI). Key findings indicate a slight decline in LBP metrics but a mild increase in NP trends, with higher growth rates observed in females. Socioeconomic status significantly influenced these patterns, with developed cou
