Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection has a variety of clinical outcomes, and host genetic factors play an important role in this process. Cytokines are important factors in mediating and controlling the inflammatory process during H. pylori infection. Interleukin-8 (IL-8) plays a critical role in the epithelial cell response to H. pylori infection and the development of H. pylori-related gastric disorders. The IL-8 gene has an A/T base pair polymorphism in the promoter region (-251), which has been linked to an increase in interleukin production by gastric epithelial cells. In this contex…

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with insulin resistance and glycemia in non-diabetes. However, the relationship between H. pylori infection and glycemia in diabetes remains inconclusive. Therefore, we explored the effect of H. pylori infection status and its eradication on glycemic control and antidiabetic therapy in type 2 diabetes patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 549 diabetes patients were recruited for sequential two-step approach (immunoglobulin G [IgG] serology followed by 13 C-urea breath test [UBT]) to discriminate "active" (IgG+ and UBT+) from…

Purpose-bred common marmosets from domestic sources housed in a US research facility, and used in multiple drug discovery programmes, were noted to have a high incidence of spontaneous inflammatory bowel disease and sporadic cholecystitis and cholangiohepatitis. Inflammatory infiltrates increased in incidence and severity with age. Because Helicobacter spp. have been linked to gastrointestinal diseases, samples from the gastrointestinal tracts of 39 marmosets were screened for Helicobacter spp. by culture and PCR. Helicobacter spp. were frequently detected in marmosets; 28.2% of the marmosets …

Helicobacter mustelae has been isolated from stomachs of ferrets with chronic gastritis and ulcers. When H. mustelae is inoculated orally into H. mustelae-negative ferrets, the animals become colonized and develop gastritis, a significant immune response, and a transient hypochlorhydria. All of these features mimic Helicobacter pylori-induced gastric disease in humans. Because the epidemiology of H. pylori infection is poorly understood and its route of transmission is unknown, the feces of weanling and adult ferrets were cultured for the presence of H. mustelae. H. mustelae was isolated from …

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and parasites in symptomatic children examined for H. pylori antibodies, antigens, and parasites in Yemen.
METHODS: A record-based study was carried out at Specialized Sam Pediatric Center in Sana'a, Yemen for 3 years between 2011-2013. Out of the 43,200 patients seen for different causes through that period, 1008 (2.3%) (females: 675 [67%]; males: 333 [33%]) had gastric complaints, and were subjected to an examination of blood and stool for H. pylori and parasites. Data regarding age and gender was also collected.

A 53-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for further examination of a rectal polypoid lesion. Colonoscopy revealed a submucosal tumor in the rectum (Ra) and a diagnosis of MALT lymphoma was made on the histological examination of the biopsy specimens and Southern blot analysis of the immunoglobulin heavy chain gene rearrangement. Although the patient was negative for Helicobacter pylori, H. pylori eradication therapy was performed. Colonoscopy 3 months after the eradication therapy showed disappearance of the rectal tumor. H. pylori eradication appears to be a useful treatment for not …

An 11-year-old boy with Helicobacter pylori-associated duodenal ulcer was successfully treated with a combination of lansoprazole, amoxicillin, and clarithromycin. Endoscopy and gastric biopsies were repeated 2 and 12 months later, showing ulcer healing and eradication of H. pylori. However, a 3-year follow-up study demonstrated H. heilmannii in the antral mucosa based on its characteristic morphology and positive urease test and negative culture. The patient had no contact with domestic animals such as cats and dogs. A 7-day course with lansoprazole, amoxicillin, and clarithromycin was perfor…

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The reported prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in Taiwan was 54.4% in 1992. An updated prevalence of H. pylori infection in asymptomatic adults is lacking in Taiwan. We aimed to assess the updated age-standardized prevalence of H. pylori infection in asymptomatic subjects and in patients with dyspepsia and to assess the accuracy of H. pylori stool antigen (HpSA) test for screening of H. pylori in Chinese population.
METHODS: Asymptomatic adult subjects (N = 189) were screened for H. pylori infection using HpSA, serology, and 13 C-urea breath test (13 C-UBT) in 20…

BACKGROUND: Smectite can serve as a drug delivery system and gentamicin-intercalated smectite hybrids are expected to supersede the standard therapy for Helicobacter pylori eradication. The aim of this study was to confirm whether the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of aminoglycosides applied as smectite hybrids remained low against recently isolated H. pylori strains.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 140 strains were collected for a minimum period of 3 years. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests were performed, and the MICs of eight antibiotics (amoxicillin, clarithromycin, metronidazo…

BACKGROUND: The canine Gram-negative Helicobacter bizzozeronii is one of seven species in Helicobacter heilmannii sensu lato that are detected in 0.17-2.3% of the gastric biopsies of human patients with gastric symptoms. At the present, H. bizzozeronii is the only non-pylori gastric Helicobacter sp. cultivated from human patients and is therefore a good alternative model of human gastric Helicobacter disease. We recently sequenced the genome of the H. bizzozeronii human strain CIII-1, isolated in 2008 from a 47-year old Finnish woman suffering from severe dyspeptic symptoms. In this study, we …

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Endoscopic screening of all dyspeptic patients is not cost-effective, nor is it feasible in many health-care delivery systems. To select the most appropriate candidates, various preendoscopic screening strategies have been proposed, some of which include Helicobacter pylori serology and patient age. We assessed the value of these two criteria in preendoscopic screening of a large series of dyspeptic patients, and compared the results obtained in a referral hospital (university center with an extensive H. pylori research program) with those in nonreferral hospital (pa…

It is generally agreed that Helicobacter pylori (Hp) plays a key role in alterating regulatory factors affecting cellular proliferation during the disease process. During chronic superficial gastritis there is, in case of moderate/severe activity, a foveolar-superficial expansion of immature muco-peptic cells. In the present experience this phenomenon has been evaluated in the surrounding areas of 22 body-fundic gastric ulcer (BFGU). The 72.7% of BFGU were Hp positive. The expansion was detectable in 68.7% of Hp positive BFGU. The expansion process involves the substitution of mature cells wit…

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a human bacterial pathogen that causes one of the most common chronic bacterial infections worldwide. The microorganism has been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a Group I carcinogen. While the etiological link to gastric cancer is well established, the precise molecular and cellular mechanisms driving this transformation are highly complex and incompletely understood. Fundamentally, the infection results from the chronic presence of acute on chronic gastric mucosal inflammation. H. pylori pathogenicity is increased by bacteria…

Helicobacter pylori is the most common cause of chronic gastric mucosal infections worldwide. The current global H. pylori infection rate is estimated at 50%. Untreated H. pylori colonization may lead to gastritis, peptic ulcers, and malignancies such as mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma and gastric cancer. H. pylori grows in the gastric mucosa by modulating host immunity, and can trigger a strong host immune response. The interaction between H. pylori and host immune defenses is complex, and the bacterium induces a gastric mucosal immunosuppressive microenvironment through mul…

Gastritis is the inflammation of the gastric mucosa, which requires histological confirmation for diagnosis. The most common cause is Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection. We present two cases of gastritis with uncommon etiologies. In both cases, endoscopic findings were nonspecific, and histology was essential for reaching a diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: Helicobacter pylori is a significant contributor to conditions such as peptic ulcer disease, gastric cancer, gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, and colorectal cancer. Recent studies have suggested a potential link between H. pylori and cirrhosis. However, the impact of H. pylori on cirrhosis-related mortality, inpatient outcomes, and decompensating events remains unclear. Considering the widespread availability of H. pylori testing and effective treatment options, there is a potential rationale for eradicating H. pylori in cirrhotic patients to mitigate the morbi…
