Oxfendazole: a promising agent for the treatment and control of helminth infections in humans.

Oxfendazole (methyl [5-(phenylsulphinyl)-1H benzimidazole-2-yl] carbamate) has a particularly long metabolic half-life in ruminants, and its metabolite fenbendazole also has anthelminthic action. A very limited number of drugs are available for the treatment of some zoonotic helminth infections, such as neurocysticercosis and echinococcosis. More recent work has expanded oxfendazole's nonclinical safety profile and demonstrated its safety and bioavailability in healthy human volunteers, thus advancing the possibility of a new and greatly needed option for antiparasitic treatment of geohelminth

The intestinal helminth community of the spiny-tailed lizard Darevskia rudis (Squamata, Lacertidae) from northern Turkey.

Populations of the lizard Darevskia rudis (Bedriaga, 1886) from northern Anatolia were examined for intestinal parasites in adult specimens. One cestode, Nematotaenia tarentolae López-Neyra, 1944 and four nematode species, Spauligodon saxicolae Sharpilo, 1962, Skrjabinelazia hoffmanni Li, 1934, Oswaldocruzia filiformis (Goeze, 1782) and Strongyloides darevskyi Sharpilo, 1976, were found. Three of these nematodes, S. saxicolae, S. hoffmanni and S. darevskyi are suggested to be part of a module in the network of Darevskia spp. and their parasites. Only one, S. darevskyi, was identified as a Dare

Methods to sustain drug efficacy in helminth control programmes.

Assessment of the efficacy of anthelminthic treatment in public health is a broad concept, which goes beyond parasitological methods and should be clearly defined according to several indicators of morbidity. Several factors may influence the efficacy of anthelminthic drugs. The quality of drug is an issue of great importance, especially when produced locally as a generic product and used in large-scale chemotherapy-based control programmes. Other factors include the drug-patient interaction, the host-parasite relationship, the diagnostic method used, genetic variations between parasite strain

Co-existence of congeneric species of acanthocephala: Acanthocephalus lucii and A. anguillae in eels Anguilla anguilla in Ireland.

A population of eels Anguilla anguilla from Lough Derg, R. Shannon, Ireland, harbouring infections of both Acanthocephalus lucii and A. anguillae was studied over three years. Both parasite species had the same intermediate host and eels appeared to be the only definitive host for A. anguillae. Throughout the whole period, A. lucii was the dominant parasite, was over-dispersed throughout the eel population and most frequently occurred as a single species infection. A. anguillae was far less common, its dispersion was close to random at most times and it almost invariably occurred as a mixed sp

A blueprint for success: integration of neglected tropical disease control programmes.

The rapid expansion of chemotherapy-based control programmes for neglected tropical diseases has been catalysed by funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, donations of several drugs from pharmaceutical manufacturers, and the reduced price of the drug praziquantel. Focussing on lymphatic filariasis, schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis, we review here the progress made to date with the implementation and integration of large-scale control programmes. Unresolved issues include a means for rapid identification of communities at highest risk of co-morbidity, cost-effectiv…

Maternal anemia in helminth-infected pregnant women: Dose-response with hookworm intensity and other risk factors in a Ugandan cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Anemia remains a significant global public health challenge, affecting approximately 25% of the world's population and disproportionately impacting pregnant women, with an estimated 40% prevalence worldwide. Intestinal helminth infections exacerbate this burden, with anemia prevalence reported as high as 55.6% among infected pregnant women compared to 16.4% in those uninfected. This study aimed to determine the burden of anemia and its determinants among pregnant women with helminthiasis attending antenatal care at tertiary Hospitals in western Uganda. Methods: A hospital-based cro…

Community-based interventions for the prevention and control of helmintic neglected tropical diseases.

In this paper, we aim to systematically analyze the effectiveness of community-based interventions (CBIs) for the prevention and control of helminthiasis including soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) (ascariasis, hookworms, and trichuriasis), lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, dracunculiasis, and schistosomiasis. We systematically reviewed literature published before May 2013 and included 32 studies in this review. Findings from the meta-analysis suggest that CBIs are effective in reducing the prevalence of STH (RR: 0.45, 95% CI: 0.38, 0.54), schistosomiasis (RR: 0.40, 95% CI: 0.33, 0.50),…

Implementing preventive chemotherapy through an integrated National Neglected Tropical Disease Control Program in Mali.

BACKGROUND: Mali is endemic for all five targeted major neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). As one of the five 'fast-track' countries supported with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funds, Mali started to integrate the activities of existing disease-specific national control programs on these diseases in 2007. The ultimate objectives are to eliminate lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis and trachoma as public health problems and to reduce morbidity caused by schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis through regular treatment to eligible populations, and t…

Sonographic images of hepato-pancreatico-biliary and intestinal ascariasis: A pictorial review.

UNLABELLED: Despite advancement in the diagnosis and treatment of intestinal helminthiasis, ascariasis remains the most common cause of helminthic infections in the developing countries. Ultrasound offers a rapid, safe, and noninvasive approach to the diagnosis of intestinal ascariasis. Ultrasound is also the modality of choice for diagnosis of hepatobiliary ascariasis, which is relatively rare and is due to migration of intestinal worms through the papilla of Vater. We present an imaging spectrum of hepato-pancreatico-biliary and intestinal ascariasis. MAIN MESSAGES: • Ascariasis refer to in…

Cholelithiasis in children in a Chinese hospital: report of 52 cases.

Over a period of 22 years (1958-1980), 52 children with cholelithiasis were treated in the Hunan Medical College Hospital in Ghangsha, China. Enteric helminthiasis is a common endemic disease in China and the countries of the Far East. Common in this region also is biliary ascariasis, which can precipitate an abdominal emergency in children. Both these conditions make differentiation of primary acute cholecystitis from the acute cholecystitis that is a complication of biliary ascariasis difficult in children. But, whatever the etiology of the disease, cholelithiasis was confirmed in all 52 chi…

[Teniarynchosis (taeniasis) in emergency surgery].

Teniarynchosis (taeniasis) is a helminthiasis with chronic course, predominant lesion of the upper gastrointestinal tract and active release of segments. The causative agent of taeniasis is Taenia saginata. This disease is widespread, although endemic countries are Africa, Australia, South America and Asia. Cases of teniarynchosis are rare in surgical practice. We present a patient who admitted with blunt abdominal injury and isolated wound of small. After laparotomy, we found alive bovine tapeworm that entered into abdominal cavity through the wound in small intestine. The parasite was remove…

[Recommendations from the Brazilian Society of Rheumatology on the diagnosis and treatment of intestinal parasitic infections in patients with autoimmune rheumatic disorders].

Intestinal parasites - helminths and protozoa - are cosmopolitan diseases which are most prevalent in tropical regions. Patients with diagnoses of autoimmune rheumatic diseases have, due to the underlying disease or its treatment, an increased risk of occurrence of severe manifestations of intestinal parasites. Although the prevalence of these parasitic infections is very high in our environment, not always is the rheumatologist attentive to the need for investigation and treatment of helminthiasis and protozooses before the use of immunomodulatory, immunosuppressive therapies, and of biologic…

Nematode infections: soil-transmitted helminths and trichinella.

Infection with soil-transmitted helminths occurs via ingestion of nematode eggs with contaminated food and water, via hands, or inhalation of dust, or by penetration of larvae through the skin. Trichinella infections are caused by the ingestion of larvae contained in undercooked meat. In highly endemic areas, preventive chemotherapy (ie, regular administration of anthelmintic drugs to at-risk populations) is the key strategy against soil-transmitted helminthiasis. Integrated control approaches, including improved hygiene, sanitation, and water, are required for lasting effects. Because of grow…

Helminth parasitic infections of the central nervous system: a diagnostic approach.

Helminth parasitic infections of the central nervous system (CNS) occur worldwide with high prevalence in tropical and subtropical countries. Clinical evaluation of patients is mandatory, and it is convenient to group the clinical manifestations into syndromes: for example space-occupying lesions, meningitis, and encephalitis. The history should focus on residence or travel to endemic areas, diet, activities, intercurrent medical conditions, and associated clinical clues. Direct parasitological diagnosis can be reached by cerebrospinal fluid and cerebral tissue examination either by microscopy

[Main features of helminth parasitism in cattle in Ituri (Haut-Zaire). III. Geographic distribution and prevalence of the main helminths].

A necropsic survey, carried out in eleven slaughterhouses in Ituri (Haut-Zaïre), has permitted to define the geographic distribution and prevalences of the main cattle helminths. Trematodes, except the paramphistomes, had a very heterogeneous distribution. Prevalence of Fasciola gigantica ranged from 9 to 72% according to the sites, but these variations were not linked to topographic or climatologic parameters. The infection with Schistosoma bovis was much variable as well (12.5 to 72%) and seemed absent from the central high altitude area. The occurrence of Dicrocoelium hospes was restricted
