The lack of established diagnostic criteria makes diagnosing blunt cardiac injury difficult. We investigated the factors associated with blu … rib fracture (AOR 1.362, 95% CI 1.147-1.618), sternal fracture (AOR 3.319, 95% CI 2.696-4.085). and hemothorax/pneumothorax (AOR 1.689, 95% CI 1.423-2.006)) was positively associated with blunt cardiac injury. Regarding the types of patients, car drivers had a higher rate of blunt cardiac injury compared to other types of patients. Driving a car, hypotension …

Blunt chest trauma occurs in up to 50 per cent of all fatal motor vehicle accidents and is the primary cause of death in 12-25 per cent; yet … ould be familiar with this technique. Indications for immediate thoracotomy should include: massive hemothorax (greater than 1000 ml), continued bleeding greater than 300 ml in the first hour, bleeding greater than 200 ml/hr for 5 hours, or increasing hemothorax in spite of tube thoracostomy. Close adherence to these guidelines would have allowed both patien …

Injuries to blood vessels near the heart can quickly become life-threatening and include arterial injuries during central venous puncture, which can lead to hemorrhagic shock. We report 6 patients in whom injury to the subclavian artery and vein led to life-threatening complications. Central venous catheters are associated with a multitude of risks, such as venous thrombosis, air embolism, systemic or local infections, paresthesia, hemothorax, pneumothorax, and cervical hematoma, which are not always immediately discernible. The subclavian catheter is at a somewhat lower risk of catheter-assoc…

BACKGROUND: Vitamin K deficiency results in serious coagulation dysfunction, but hemorrhagic shock is rare. Herein, we describe a case of vi … f previous antibiotic treatment and restricted diet, and it led to hemorrhagic shock. Massive right hemothorax was observed by computed tomography, and urgent interventional radiology was performed. We observed no injury to the intercostal artery truncus but confirmed an abnormality in the course of the intercostal artery; therefore, we inferred that the cau …

BACKGROUND: Blunt cardiac trauma is diagnosed in less than 10% of trauma patients and covers the range of severity from clinically insignifi … old female involved in a MVC, who presented unresponsive, hypotensive and tachycardic. A left sided hemothorax was diagnosed and a chest tube placed with 1200 mL of bloody output. The patient was taken to the OR emergently. Intraoperatively, a laceration in the right pericardium and a 3 cm defect in the anterior, right atrium were identified. Despite measure …

Intercostal arteriovenous malformations (AVM) are rare, with most being secondary to trauma or iatrogenic therapeutic procedures. Only one case of presumably congenital AVM has been reported. Here we report the first case of a ruptured aneurysm of intercostal AVM associated with neurofibromatosis type 1 in a 32-year-old woman who experienced hypovolemic shock caused by massive hemothorax.

A 64-year-old male patient with pulmonary ground-glass opacity (GGO) underwent microwave ablation treatment. An early cavity occurred and induced subsequent serious major complications of pneumothorax and hemothorax. The chest tube intervention was conducted, but the symptoms deteriorated. Finally, pulmonary wedge resection was conducted, and a lung tissue tear of 5 cm was observed during the operation.

The use of uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopy (u-VATS) is becoming a commonly used surgical technique and can be an effective approach for the surgical treatment of many pulmonary and non-pulmonary conditions. This review article summarizes current medical evidence informing the practice of u-VATS for treating non-pulmonary conditions including hyperhidrosis, hemothorax, pleural effusion, and thymic disease.

We describe a 19-year-old man with 9 stab wounds of the chest. Initial evaluation revealed paraplegia at the D-10 level and bilateral hemothorax. 2 days after admission right-sided chylothorax was diagnosed. Fasting and total parenteral nutrition resulted in complete clearance. Chylothorax can cause major metabolic consequences, but prompt treatment results in full recovery.

Thymic hematomas are uncommon in animals, and the few reported cases are all in dogs. In May 2019, we necropsied a wild Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) in Junju, Republic of Korea, and found a thymic hematoma without any signs of trauma or hemorrhage in other organs, except for a hemothorax. This study describes the macroscopic and microscopic examinations of a thymic hematoma in an Eurasian otter.

Spontaneous rupture of an intercostal artery is exceptionally rare without an inciting event such as trauma or nontraumatic arterial wall weakening. This report details the diagnosis and treatment of a 47-year-old man who presented with a spontaneous hemothorax from an intercostal artery. There are very few reports in the literature documenting spontaneous intercostal artery rupture without associated illness or injury.

The sudden death of a Cebus apella female (> 19 years old) on an experimental hyperlipidic diet during three years is described. The gross lesions were hemothorax, atherosclerotic plaques in the aortic curve, and an aneurysm in the ascending aorta. Histologically, an enlargement of the intima in the ascending aorta with hyalinization and a thrombus were observed. The media was thinned and showed sclerosis and hemorrhage extending to the tunica adventicia.

Obstetric and gynecologic pleural effusions may occur in the setting of different diseases and conditions, early and appropriate recognition of the different etiologies of these effusions will aid in appropriate treatment management. In this paper we will give an overview of the different pleural effusion etiologies that may be encountered including catamenial hemothorax, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, the different Meigs' syndromes and benign peripartum pleural effusion.

Porous diaphragm syndromes are a group of seemingly disparate clinical symptom complexes involving a wide variety of unrelated medical specialties. However, they are linked by a common anatomical feature, a defect in the diaphragm. They usually present with thoracic symptomatology--pleural effusions, pneumothorax, hemothorax, empyema--mediated by this defect. Management of these syndromes utilizes principles of thoracic surgical practice including thoracotomy and thoracoscopy.

This is the first account of significant aortic injury during diagnostic rigid esophagoscopy in an adult with an esophageal stricture. We describe the resultant hemothorax and hemodynamic collapse and the successful treatment with massive volume resuscitation, vasopressors, and timely surgical intervention including thoracic endovascular aortic repair. We discuss the importance of rapid diagnosis, relevant anatomy, treatment modalities, and communication as cornerstones for learning.

BACKGROUND: Rib fractures represent a common injury after blunt chest wall trauma with known complications including pneumothorax, hemothorax, pulmonary contusion, and pneumonia. This case report describes an emergency department patient with acute decompensation from aortic laceration as a rare complication of rib fractures. There are rare documented cases of this complication occurring in admitted patients with rib fractures, but this is one of the only cases that describes this complication occurring in a patient presenting to the emergency department.
CASE REPORT: This case describes a pa…

Six hundred eighty-five patients with major blunt thoracic injuries from 1968 through 1977 were retrospectively studied. This series was com … red to 35% for the 1959--1964 series; however, improved mortality occurred only among patients with hemothorax who had one or more major concomitant extrathoracic injuries. The mortality for flail chest injuries did not improve (29.5 vs 35.0%). Mortality was unchanged for isolated flail chest injuries, isolated pneumothorax, isolated hemothorax, and for flai …

Herein, we report the case of a 35-year-old female with a trapped right lung secondary to catamenial haemothorax. Following surgical decortication, re-expansion of the lung was not observed until postoperative day 81. This delay represents a heretofore unencountered complication that should be considered in the surgical management of catamenial haemothorax due to thoracic endometriosis syndrome.

Since the introduction of home-care replacement therapy for hemophilic patients, life-endangering spontaneous bleeding is rare. We describe a 15-year-old boy with severe hemophilia, who without antecedent trauma developed massive abdominal bleeding and hemothorax, leading to hypovolemic shock. Although an operation was advised, intensive conservative replacement therapy and drainage of the thorax led to complete recovery. We stress that in the absence of acute trauma, bleeding due to hemophilia consists of oozing, so conservative treatment is recommended.
