Lymphocytes from 36 patients with Behçet's disease (20 in remission and 16 in active phase) were stimulated in vitro with herpes simplex virus and then tested for their ability to generate cytotoxic T cell responses to the virus. Significant cytotoxic responses were found. CD4+ and CD8+ subpopulations from the patients in remission generated specific cytotoxic activity against autologous target cells. These observations suggested that CD4+ and CD8+ cytotoxic T cells may have an important host response in herpes virus infection in Behçet's disease.

Mollaret's meningitis is characterised by recurrent, brief episodes of serous meningitis with symptom-free intervals. Although viral etiology has been suspected, no pathogenic agent has hitherto been found. Using the immunoblot technique, we found IgG antibodies of intrathecal origin against the HSV-2-specific protein, gG2, in a patient with Mollaret's meningitis. Bilateral simultaneous Bell's palsy (BSBP) is an infrequent clinical presentation. Two patients with BSBP following a recent herpes simplex gingivostomatitis are described. From a clinical point of view, these cases support the concept that Bell's palsy may be a partial manifestation of a generalized polyneuropathy, and most probably caused by a reactivated latent herpes simplex virus.

The clinical course and complications of 268 patients with first episodes and 362 with recurrent episodes of genital herpes infection were reviewed. Laboratory procedures were compared with brain biopsy findings in 113 biopsy-proven patients with herpes simplex virus (HSV) encephalitis and 93 biopsy-negative individuals. Examinations of brain tissue by histopathology, immunofluorescence, and electron microscopy demonstrated evidence of HSV infection in 56%, 70%, and 45% of proven cases and apparently false-positive results in 14%, 9% and 2% of those biopsy-negative. Type 2 (genital) herpes simplex virus (HSV-2) was isolated from three patients (two adults and an 11-year-old girl) with acute ocular infections. Two of these patients had acute blepharoconjunctivitis and one had acute keratoconjunctivitis. Genital herpes infections had preceded the eye infections in the two adults. This was not the case in the 11-year-old, but she had been in close contact with her sister who had apparently had the genital disease. The study strongly suggests transmission of HSV-2 from the genital site to the eye.

Molecular processes are profoundly influenced by the biophysical properties of the cell interior. However, the mechanisms that control these physical properties and the processes they impact remain poorly understood, especially in the nucleus. BACKGROUND: Herpes simplex viruses (HSV-1 and HSV-2) can be transmitted both orally and sexually and cause lifelong morbidity and, in some cases, meningitis and encephalitis. Although several clinical trials using subunit antigens have been conducted, no vaccine exists. One problem in viral treatment is the emergence of drug resistance through mutations, thereby conferring resistance. PURPOSE: Migratory Serpiginous Corneal Epitheliopathy (MSCE) is a rare condition characterized by migrating corneal epithelial lesions with a serpiginous or amoeboid-shaped appearance. Its etiology remains poorly understood, and the condition often presents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Here, we report a case of a recurrent, unilateral MSCE-like lesion in a 25-year-old woman not responding to standard treatments, including repeated corneal debridement, bandage contact lens placement, and superficial keratectomy with postoperative slow tapering of steroids.
