Effects of diphenhydramine in the fetal lamb after maternal or fetal administration.

The effects of diphenhydramine on fetal behavioral states, breathing activity, blood gas status, arterial pressure and heart rate have been investigated in the fetal lamb after maternal or fetal drug administration to steady state in chronically instrumented pregnant sheep. During maternal drug infusion there were declines in the percentage of low voltage electrocorticographic (ECoG) pattern 55-46%), the percentage of low voltage ECoG activity containing rapid eye movements (80-55%), the overall incidence of fetal breathing (42-21%) and in the amount of breathing during low voltage ECoG activi

Bridging neuroanatomy and clinical reasoning: a collaborative cranial nerve matching activity.

Anatomical education presents ongoing challenges in helping students master complex content while integrating it with clinical relevance. Neuroanatomy is particularly difficult due to its intricacy and abstract nature. To address these challenges, this study evaluated the effectiveness of a team-based matching activity designed to integrate anatomical, radiological, and clinical elements of the 12 cranial nerves during the final week of a 6-wk Nervous System course. First-year medical students' performance on summative practical questions and their perceptions of the session were assessed. Stu

Heart rate variability as a biomarker of autonomic (re)activity and fatigue in multiple sclerosis.

Fatigue is a debilitating symptom in multiple sclerosis (MS) associated with autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction. Heart rate variability (HRV) provides a non-invasive measure of ANS function; yet the relative sensitivity of linear and nonlinear HRV parameters in capturing specific ANS (dys)function remains unclear. This study investigated the factorial structure of HRV parameters, their response to biopsychological interventions, and their relationship with MS-related fatigue. Data from two clinical trials (N = 78) were pooled. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was applied to time-domai

Assessment of autonomic dysfunction in primary Sjögren's syndrome: A combined evaluation using sympathetic skin response and COMPASS 31.

BACKGROUND: Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is a systemic autoimmune disorder predominantly affecting exocrine glands, with symptoms including dry eyes and mouth. Involvement of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) has been reported, though data on its frequency and clinical significance remain inconsistent. This study aimed to evaluate autonomic dysfunction in patients with pSS using Sympathetic Skin Response (SSR) and the Composite Autonomic Symptom Score 31 (COMPASS 31). METHODS: Fifty-nine female pSS patients and 38 age-matched healthy controls were enrolled. All participants underwent neu

Determination of cerebrospinal fluid adenosine deaminase activity cut-off for the diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis in Hong Kong.

AIMS: Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is a severe infection which may lead to serious complication and mortality. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential. There is a need for a simple and fast laboratory test to differentiate TBM from other causes. METHODS: Retrospective review was conducted for cerebrospinal fluid adenosine deaminase (CSF-ADA) activity which was measured at the Chemical Pathology Laboratory of Princess Margaret Hospital, the sole centre providing such service in Hong Kong, for 51 patients with suspected meningitis from nine local hospitals between June 2014 and July 2017.

Objective quantification of vitreous haze on optical coherence tomography scans: no evidence for relationship between uveitis and inflammation in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The occurrence of intermediate uveitis, which is characterized by the presence of vitreous haze (VH), in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) may be a sign of coexistent inflammatory central nervous system (CNS) disease activity. Using an automated algorithm to quantify VH on optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans, the aim was to investigate whether VH in MS patients is associated with signs of inflammatory CNS disease activity. METHODS: Vitreous haze was quantified on OCT macular volume scans of 290 MS patients and 85 healthy controls (HCs). The relationship betwee

Human motor control of landing from a drop in simulated microgravity.

Landing on the ground on one's feet implies that the energy gained during the fall be dissipated. The aim of this study is to assess human motor control of landing in different conditions of fall initiation, simulated gravity, and sensory neural input. Six participants performed drop landings using a trapdoor system and landings from self-initiated counter-movement jumps in microgravity conditions simulated in a weightlessness environment by different pull-down forces of 1-, 0.6-, 0.4-, and 0.2 g External forces applied to the body, orientation of the lower limb segments, and muscular activity

Sympathetic overactivity and plasma leptin levels in Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a severe developmental-neurological disorder, characterized by profound and progressive loss of intellectual functioning, occurring after a period (of at least 6 months) of normal development with classic stereotype hand movements, gait ataxia, jerky truncal ataxia, deceleration of brain and body organ growth and cardiac dysautonomia. Pathogenesis of sympathetic overactivity in RTT is unknown, but a previous study observed increased plasma leptin levels in Rett girls and it is well known the role of leptin in the regulation of sympathetic nervous system activity. Aim of

Effect of age on amplitude of circulating catecholamine's change of healthy cyclic mares.

Catecholamines (CATs) are neurotransmitters and allostatic hormones whose plasma concentrations are physiologically modified in various species such as human, rats, mice and donkeys, with advancing age. However, currently these mechanisms are less well elucidated in horses and more specifically in mares. The hypothesis of this study was that, as in afore mentioned species, the CATs could experience physiological changes with advancing age. The objective of this study was to evaluate the concentrations of adrenaline (A), noradrenaline (NA), dopamine (DA), and serotonin (5-HT) in mares of differ

Heart rate variability in sciatica patients referred to spine surgery: a case control study.

BACKGROUND: A chronic pain condition may result in altered autonomic nervous system regulation in various patient populations. We evaluated whether autonomic regulation differs between sciatica patients referred to spine surgery and age-matched healthy controls analyzed with heart rate variability techniques (HRV). METHODS: HRV of patients (n = 201) and healthy controls (n = 138) were measured in standing conditions (5 min). High frequency (HF) power as an index of cardiac vagal modulation and the low-to-high-frequency (LF/HF) ratio and short-term fractal scaling exponent α1 as indices of sym

Nervous structure of Meckel's diverticulum in children.

Meckel's diverticulum, being considered as the most frequent malformation of the digestive tract, has been largely presented in scientific papers, but a complete physiopathological mechanism for its natural history has not been yet described. We have studied the nervous system and the differences observed in eight Meckel's diverticulums with enteric or ectopic gastric mucosa, using specific immunohistochemical markers. It has been noted a significantly higher density of myenteric nerve fibers in areas with enteric mucosa compared with the areas with gastric heterotopias, while the transition z

Cardiac event-induced PTSD symptoms and continuous heart rate in coronary artery disease patients.

OBJECTIVE: Elevated posttraumatic stress symptoms (PSS) impact ∼13% of coronary artery disease patients after acute cardiac events and may increase the risk of recurrent events through elevated heart rate (HR), driven by high sympathetic nervous system activity. We investigated whether PSS assessed with the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5 (PCL-5) are associated with elevated ambulatory HR in recently discharged cardiac patients, independent of PSS-linked health behaviors. METHOD: Participants (N = 116; 34.4% women, 74% Hi

Blockade of sympathetic ganglia improves vascular dysfunction in septic shock.

Sepsis/septic shock activates the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) to deal with the infection stress. However, an imbalanced or maladaptive response due to excessive or uncontrolled activation characterizes autonomic dysfunction. Our hypothesis was that reducing this excessive activation of the autonomic nervous system would impact positively in sepsis. Using ganglionic blockers as a pharmacological approach, the main aim of the present report was to assess the role of ganglionic transmission in the vascular dysfunction associated with sepsis.Sepsis was induced in rats by cecal ligation and pu

Localization of Catecholaminergic Neurofibers in Pregnant Cervix as a Possible Myometrial Pacemaker.

In eutocic labor, the autonomic nervous system is dominated by the parasympathetic system, which ensures optimal blood flow to the uterus and placenta. This study is focused on the detection of the quantitative presence of catecholamine (C) neurofibers in the internal uterine orifice (IUO) and in the lower uterine segment (LUS) of the pregnant uterus, which could play a role in labor and delivery. A total of 102 women were enrolled before their submission to a scheduled cesarean section (CS); patients showed a singleton fetus in a cephalic presentation outside labor. During CS, surgeons sample

Central nervous system involvement in rheumatoid arthritis: possible role of chronic inflammation and tnf blocker therapy.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic disease, the etiology of which has yet to be clarified, which causes activation of proinflammatory pathways that bring about joint and systemic inflammation. Although peripheral nervous system anomalies are observed widely in RA, very few case reports on changes in the central nervous system (CNS) have been published. In recent years, the pathophysiology of CNS involvement that can occur in RA has attracted a great deal of attention. Emphasis has focused on the possibility that CNS involvement occurs due to blood-brain barrier (BBB) damage associated with

Sympathetic nervous system activation in essential hypertension, cardiac failure and psychosomatic heart disease.

Regional sympathetic activity can be studied in humans using electrophysiological methods measuring sympathetic nerve firing rates and neurochemical techniques providing quantification of noradrenaline spillover to plasma from sympathetic nerves in individual organs. Essential hypertension: Such measurements in patients with essential hypertension disclose activation of the sympathetic outflows to skeletal muscle blood vessels, the heart and kidneys, particularly in younger patients. This sympathetic activation, in addition to underpinning the blood pressure elevation, most likely also contrib

Cortical Hyperperfusion on MRI Arterial Spin-Labeling during the Interictal Period of Patients with Migraine Headache.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Concentrations of calcitonin gene-related peptide, a neuropeptide and potent endogenous vasodilator, are reportedly higher in patients with migraine than in healthy subjects, both during and between migraine attacks, reflecting ongoing activation of the trigeminal nervous system. In this prospective study, we measured CBF during the interictal period of patients with migraine after considering insomnia and depression and examined the effects of ongoing activation of the trigeminal nervous system, including during the interictal period, on CBF.
