[Echography of the hip in children].

Ultrasonography has emerged in recent literature as a reliable technique to visualise the infant hip. Its advantages are that non-osseous structures can be seen as well as bone, that a dynamic investigation can be performed, and that it lacks ionising radiation. This article describes the results of a screening study in 307 newborns. 13.4% of all clinically normal (stable) hips showed ultrasound abnormalities. 96.3% of these normalised spontaneously, however. Apparently the natural history of ultrasound abnormalities at birth is relatively mild. Furthermore, in a group of older children, Graf'…

Habitual dislocation of the hip.

We report the case of a girl, aged 2 years, who was able to dislocate her right hip voluntarily and in whom there was no other abnormality. She was given psychological treatment and the condition resolved after 2 years. Eight similar cases of habitual dislocation of the hip are reported in the world literature.

Injuries of the pelvis and hip.

Pelvic, acetabular, and hip fractures have a very high incidence of catastrophic early and late complications. In the emergency department, attention should be focused on the prompt and judicious management of concurrent local visceral and systemic problems. The eventual outcome of any pelvic or hip injury reflects the adequacy of the emergency treatment.

Idiopathic chondrolysis of the hip.

The cases of nine patients (eleven hips) with idiopathic chondrolysis of the hip were studied. Seven of the patients were white and two were Hispanic. The age at onset ranged from eight to sixteen years (mean, 11.5 years). Four patients were boys and five were girls. All patients had a decreased passive range of motion of the hip, and radiographic examination showed regional osteoporosis, premature closure of the femoral capital physis, narrowing of the joint space, and lateral overgrowth of the femoral head on the neck. All laboratory examinations were negative for evidence of infection or rh…

[Physiopathology of osteochondritis of the hip].

The author has investigated to know whether Perthes disease is a localised epiphyseal distrophy or a symptom of a general perturbance of chondral tissue. The complexity of the structure of the femoral head is recalled as well as the development of its vascularisation. Pathogenic factors are discussed. It is concluded that Perthe's disease is probably a localisation of a general disease.

Valgus osteotomy of the hip.

The author's technique of valgus osteotomy is described. The advantages claimed are wide and easy correction combined with distal displacement of the great trochanter, restoration of physiological valgus, lengthening of the limb, and rigid and secure fixation. The indications, contra-indications, technique and results are discussed in an analysis of ninety-eight operated cases.
