Burden of diarrhea, hospitalization and mortality due to cryptosporidial infections in Indian children.

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidium spp. is a common, but under-reported cause of childhood diarrhea throughout the world, especially in developing countries. A comprehensive estimate of the burden of cryptosporidiosis in resource-poor settings is not available. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We used published and unpublished studies to estimate the burden of diarrhea, hospitalization and mortality due to cryptosporidial infections in Indian children. Our estimates suggest that annually, one in every 6-11 children <2 years of age will have an episode of cryptosporidial diarrhea, 1 in every 169-633 c

Clinical characteristics and mortality of hospitalized alcoholic hepatitis patients in the United States.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Alcoholic hepatitis (AH) is the most florid manifestation of alcoholic liver disease. In this study, we examined the cl … lopathy, and coagulopathy were independently associated with in-patient mortality. CONCLUSIONS: In-hospital mortality rate for AH remains high, especially in those with infectious complications, hepatic encephalopathy, coagulopathy, and acute renal failure. Our analysis documented significant healthcare cost and utilization among hospitalized AH patients.

Predictor of mortality in children with typhoid intestinal perforation in a Tertiary Hospital in Nigeria.

PURPOSE: Typhoid intestinal perforation (TIP) exerts a great toll both on the patients and the surgeons in resource poor countries. Factors that predict mortality in patients with TIP remain controversial. The study aims to determine factors that predict mortality in a Nigerian tertiary facility and to offer strategies for improvement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of data of 153 children who underwent surgery for TIP at a Tertiary Hospital in Nigeria over a period of 8 years (January 2002 to December 2009). Data collected included patient demographics, presenta

Neonatal sepsis and mortality in a regional hospital in Trinidad: aetiology and risk factors.

A total of 132 neonatal deaths among 627 infants admitted to the neonatal ward of the San Fernando General Hospital, Trinidad over a 2-year period were reviewed. The most common cause of death was prematurity (43.9%). Infection was the second most common cause (21.2%). Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus were the most frequently isolated organisms (43%). The major drugs used empirically in suspected cases of sepsis were ampicillin or ceftazidime plus gentamicin. About 85% of S. aureus were resistant to ampicillin, and P. aeruginosa resistance to ceftazidime and gentamicin was 76.7

[Biliary surgery mortality in Chile in 1990. Cooperative study in 17 hospitals].

A survey about surgical procedures performed in 1990 was answered by 17 surgical services. With these data the operative mortality of biliary surgery was analyzed. During 1990, 39,643 patients were subjected to major surgery of which 9,654 (24.3%) corresponded to benign biliary tract diseases. Forty nine percent of patients had chronic cholecystitis, 36% acute cholecystitis and 16% choledocholithiasis. Global mortality of these procedures was 0.58% and mortalities for chronic cholecystitis, acute cholecystitis and choledocholithiasis were 0.06, 0.6 and 2% respectively. These numbers increased

Incidence and causes of maternal mortality in five Kampala hospitals, 1980-1986.

This report presents results of a descriptive study to estimate the mortality rate, identify the type and the causes of maternal deaths. The study was conducted in 1987 in Kampala hospitals for a period covering seven years from 1st January 1980 to 31st December, 1986. The non abortion maternal mortality rate (NAMMR) was 2.65 per 1000 deliveries while the abortion related maternal mortality rate (ARMMR) was 3.58 per 1000 abortions. There was a statistically significant increase in NAMMR while the increase in ARMMR was almost significant over the seven year period. Of all maternal deaths, 80 pe

Platelet-Albumin-Bilirubin Index for Predicting Hospitalization and Mortality in Pulmonary Hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hypertension (PH), a progressive multisystemic disorder characterized by right ventricular failure and hepatic congestion, significantly alters platelet dynamics and liver function. This study evaluated the ability of the platelet-albumin-bilirubin index (PALBI), a marker of the hepatic-cardiac axis, to discriminate between PH patients and healthy individuals and to predict 360-day all-cause mortality and heart failure-related hospitalizations (HFH). METHODS AND RESULTS: This retrospective study included 3,432 individuals (1,520 PH patients, identified based on high-risk

Assessment of in-hospital mortality in patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding on antithrombotic treatment.

BACKGROUND: Antithrombotic agents have been linked to a higher risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, but their impact on in-hospital mortality remains controversial, with observational studies variably reporting increased, unchanged, or reduced mortality. This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the influence of antithrombotic on in-hospital mortality in patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding. METHODS: Following Cochrane and PRISMA recommendations, we included observational studies of adult patients admitted for acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding comparing in-hospital all-caus…

Timing of Mechanical Circulatory Support and In-Hospital Mortality in Patients With Cardiogenic Shock.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association between early mechanical circulatory support (MCS) use and mortality in patients with cardiogenic shock (CS). PATIENTS AND METHODS: We identified adults aged 18 years or older hospitalized from October 1, 2015, to June 30, 2023, with a diagnosis of CS. Patients receiving MCS within the first 2 days of admission were included in the study. Using inverse probability of treatment weighting, we assessed the association between receiving MCS on day 1 vs day 2 and in-hospital mortality. RESULTS: Among 69,085 patients, 75.7% (n=52,307) and 24.3% (n=16,778) re…
