A Data-Driven Evaluation of the Stop TB Global Partnership Strategy of Targeting Key Populations at Greater Risk for Tuberculosis.

OBJECTIVE: Identifying those infected with tuberculosis (TB) is an important component of any strategy for reducing TB transmission and population prevalence. The Stop TB Global Partnership recently launched an initiative with a focus on key populations at greater risk for TB infection or poor clinical outcomes, due to housing and working conditions, incarceration, low household income, malnutrition, co-morbidities, exposure to tobacco and silica dust, or barriers to accessing medical care. To achieve operational targets, the global health community needs effective, low cost, and large-scale s

Asymptomatic and Submicroscopic Carriage of Plasmodium knowlesi Malaria in Household and Community Members of Clinical Cases in Sabah, Malaysia.

Although asymptomatic carriage of human malaria species has been widely reported, the extent of asymptomatic, submicroscopic Plasmodium knowlesi parasitemia is unknown. In this study, samples were obtained from individuals residing in households or villages of symptomatic malaria cases with the aim of detecting submicroscopic P. knowlesi in this population. Four published molecular assays were used to confirm the presence of P. knowlesi. Latent class analysis revealed that the estimated proportion of asymptomatic individuals was 6.9% (95% confidence interval, 5.6%-8.4%). This study confirms th

[Entrapment of the ulnar nerve at the elbow caused by repetitive movements: description of a clinical case].

The paper describes a case of ulnar neuropathy in a man who made household fittings and toys using bamboo. Several years after starting the job he showed symptoms and physical signs of ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow, which were confirmed by electrophysiological findings. Job analysis revealed biomechanical risk factors consisting of a high repetition of forceful flexion and extension of the elbow, wrist and fingers without sufficient rest periods. Chronic musculoskeletal overuse gradually leads to tendon and nerve disorders. The ulnar neuropathy described can be classed under cumulative o

Work frequency and subsequent health and well-being among older adults in Japan: An outcome-wide study.

BACKGROUND: Working in later life has been linked to health and well-being, yet how work frequency relates to these outcomes remains uncertain. We examined associations between work frequency and subsequent multiple domains of health and well-being among older adults. METHODS: We used two datasets from the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study (JAGES). Dataset 1 used three-wave panel data (2016, 2019, 2022; n = 41,758) for 42 self-reported outcomes. Dataset 2 linked 2016-2019 panel data to municipal long-term care insurance records through 2022 (n = 56,153), capturing mortality, dementia, and

Review of Importance of Weather and Environmental Variables in Agent-Based Arbovirus Models.

The study sought to review the works of literature on agent-based modeling and the influence of climatic and environmental factors on disease outbreak, transmission, and surveillance. Thus, drawing the influence of environmental variables such as vegetation index, households, mosquito habitats, breeding sites, and climatic variables including precipitation or rainfall, temperature, wind speed, and relative humidity on dengue disease modeling using the agent-based model in an African context and globally was the aim of the study. A search strategy was developed and used to search for relevant a

Adults with adverse childhood experiences report greater coronavirus anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Adults with early life adversity exhibit heightened response to threat signals in the environment, which makes them vulnerable to developing stress-related mental health problems, including anxiety disorders. Yet, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on adults who have experienced early life adversity is understudied. Recently, researchers have characterized dysfunctional cognitions about the pandemic, which are associated with negative mental health outcomes, as coronavirus anxiety. We conducted a study to examine the relation between exposure to early life adversity, perceived thr

Direct and Indirect Costs Following Living Kidney Donation: Findings From the KDOC Study.

Some living kidney donors (LKDs) incur costs associated with donation, although these costs are not well characterized in the United States. We collected cost data in the 12 mo following donation from 182 LKDs participating in the multicenter prospective Kidney Donor Outcomes Cohort (KDOC) Study. Most LKDs (n = 167, 92%) had one direct cost or more following donation, including ground transportation (86%), health care (41%), meals (53%), medications (36%), lodging (23%), and air transportation (12%). LKDs missed 33 072 total work hours, 40% of which were unpaid and led to $302 175 in lost wage

Risk of death or life-threatening injury for women with children not sired by the abuser.

Women who are abused by their male intimate partners incur many costs, ranging in severity from fleeting physical pain to death. Previous research has linked the presence of children sired by a woman's previous partner to increased risk of woman abuse and to increased risk of femicide. The current research extends this work by securing data from samples of 111 unabused women, 111 less severely abused women, 128 more severely abused women, and 26 victims of intimate partner femicide from the Chicago Women's Health Risk Study to document an ordinal trend in the risk of experiencing more severe f

Explaining educational differences in return to work after early breast cancer: a mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms behind the effect of education on the return to work (RTW) of survivors of breast cancer (BCS) are unknown. METHODS: We used data from 2461 BCS from the prospective cohort CANTO. Using inverse odds weights we studied the mediating effect of pre-existing comorbidities, clinical factors, post-treatment health related quality of life, working conditions and household composition in the association between education and non-RTW. We used education in three categories. All models were adjusted for age at diagnosis. RESULTS: Non-RTW increased at lower levels of education.

Causes of irritant contact dermatitis after occupational skin exposure: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) is a major cause of occupational disease. The aim was to review the relation between exposure to occupational irritants and ICD and the prognosis of ICD. METHODS: Through a systematic search, 1516 titles were identified, and 48 studies were included in the systematic review. RESULTS: We found that the evidence for an association between ICD and occupational irritants was strong for wet work, moderate for detergents and non-alcoholic disinfectants, and strong for a combination. The highest quality studies provided limited evidence for an association

An ICT-enabled community oriented primary care intervention in mining communities during COVID-19 (2019-2022): perceived changes in the role and place of community health workers.

BACKGROUND: This is a study of service provider perceptions of the place, role and practices of CHWs in a four-year, large-scale private sector funded, public service ICT-enabled COPC intervention with rural and remote mining communities. Like all South African communities, apart from large mining house employees and some contractors, most people use available public healthcare services and private traditional as well as limited allopathic private sector providers. In addition to the limitations of facility centred primary healthcare and a fragmented health care system, the many negative healt

The effects of economic deprivation on psychological well-being among the working population of Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: The association between poverty and mental health has been widely investigated. There is, however, limited evidence of mental health implications of working poverty, despite its representing a rapidly expanding segment of impoverished populations in many developed nations. In this study, we examined whether working poverty in Switzerland, a country with substantial recent growth among the working poor, was correlated with two dependent variables of interest: psychological health and unmet mental health need. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data drawn from the first 3 wave

The prevalence of lameness and associated risk factors in cart mules in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.

Ethiopia has 7.1 million donkeys and mules, the majority of which are used as pack animals. Factors such as poor harness quality, long-distance traveling, and heavy cartloads have been linked to reduced work efficiency. Addressing the health and welfare of working equids is imperative not only for the animals but also for the households dependent upon them for livelihood. In developing countries, 75 % of working equids have gait or limb abnormalities, but the relationship between workload and prevalence of lameness is unknown. We examined 450 cart mules in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. Lameness and wor

Addressing Racial Capitalism's Impact on Black Essential Workers During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Policy Recommendations.

Black Americans are more likely to be essential workers due to racial capitalism. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, essential workers are less able to adhere to social distancing and stay-at-home guidelines due to the nature of their work, because they are more likely to occupy crowded households, and are more likely to possess pre-existing health conditions. To assist Black essential workers in preventing infection or reducing the intensity of symptoms if contracted, vaccination against the virus is essential. Unfortunately, Black essential workers face considerable barriers to accessing vacc
