Addressing overdose risk among unstably housed women in San Francisco, California: an examination of potential fentanyl contamination of multiple substances.

BACKGROUND: Numerous reports have led to concerns that fentanyl is added to many street drugs as an adulterant, including to stimulants like cocaine and methamphetamine, and could increase risks for negative health outcomes. METHODS: We collected information regarding recent substance use through self-report and urine toxicology (confirmed with mass spectrometry) once a month for up to 6 monthly study visits from a probability sample of 245 women in San Francisco with a history of housing instability (2016-2019). We compared the presence of fentanyl metabolites with (1) the presence of metabo…

Pharmaceutical opioid use among oral and intravenous users in Australia: A qualitative comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Between 1992 and 2012 dispensing episodes for pharmaceutical opioids (PO) in Australia increased from 500000 to 7500000. In the US, increases in the prescription of PO have been linked to increases in opioid-related morbidity and mortality and transitions to heroin injection. However, Australian data indicate that morbidity and mortality related to PO are relatively low, particularly when compared to heroin and other drugs. This paper explores the characteristics and patterns of non-medical pharmaceutical opioid (NMPO) use among a sample of young people in Sydney, Australia. METHO

Level of burden among women diagnosed with severe mental illness and substance abuse.

Women diagnosed with severe mental illness and substance abuse may face a variety of associated difficulties that require intervention, including other health-related problems, housing instability or homelessness, and a history of or current physical or sexual abuse. This article expands upon the concept of "level of burden" by specifically examining issues for women with multiple vulnerabilities in a sample of 577 women participating in a residential substance abuse treatment program. Two types of outcomes were examined for the women. In Study 1, the effects of severe mental illness as well a…

Health Conditions and Service Use Among Intimate Partner Violence Shelter Residents.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) has been linked to substantial physical, social, and mental health concerns across the lifespan. Health impacts of IPV are linked to economic and housing instability. Emergency shelter is primarily focused on the safety and stabilization of the most vulnerable IPV survivors. Despite frequent use of shelter interventions, little is known about the health service experiences of IPV survivors in shelters, including the extent to which these services are perceived as helpful. To address these gaps, we surveyed 214 IPV shelter residents in a Southern state. We asked …

Cross-sectional examination of unmet health-related social needs and depression among low-income White and racially and ethnically minoritized older adults.

OBJECTIVES: Social determinants of health (SDoH), including structural racism and economic marginalization, shape mental health outcomes but are frequently conceptualized at a level too broad for direct clinical intervention. In contrast, health-related social needs (HRSNs), such as food insecurity and housing instability, represent more proximal and actionable targets within clinical and community-based settings. Despite growing recognition of their importance, the relationship between HRSNs and depression among structurally marginalized older adults remains under explored. This study seeks t…
