Dysfunction of mitotic cell division at shoot apices triggered severe growth abortion in interspecific hybrids between tetraploid wheat and Aegilops tauschii.

Common wheat is an allohexaploid species, derived through endoreduplication of an interspecific triploid hybrid produced from a cross between cultivated tetraploid wheat and the wild diploid relative Aegilops tauschii. Hybrid incompatibilities, including hybrid necrosis, have been observed in triploid wheat hybrids. A limited number of A. tauschii accessions show hybrid lethality in triploid hybrids crossed with tetraploid wheat as a result of developmental arrest at the early seedling stage, which is termed severe growth abortion (SGA). Despite the potential severity of this condition, the ge

USP6-FISH Negative Nodular Fasciitis: Benign Impostor of the Orbit.

Nodular fasciitis (NF) is a benign, rapidly growing myofibroblastic proliferation that can closely mimic sarcoma clinically, radiographically, and histologically, posing a significant diagnostic challenge. We report a case of an 11-year-old boy presenting with a painless but progressively enlarging periorbital mass initially suspected to be a dermoid cyst. Although his ultrasound was reassuring, MRI showed an enhancing lesion concerning for neoplasm, prompting surgical excision. Histopathologic evaluation revealed spindle-cell proliferation within a myxoid stroma consistent with NF. However, t

Physical mapping of the Borrelia miyamotoi HT31 chromosome in comparison with that of Borrelia turicatae, an etiological agent of tick-borne relapsing fever.

We report the construction of physical maps of chromosomes for Borrelia miyamotoi HT31 (a new species of Borrelia) and Borrelia turicatae (relapsing fever agent) by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis of DNA fragments generated by digestion of chromosomal DNA with rare-cutting restriction endonucleases and reciprocal hybridization. The size of the B. miyamotoi HT31 chromosome was calculated to be approximately 925 kilobase pairs, and the chromosome for B. turicatae was estimated to be 951 kilobase pairs. The chromosomes of B. miyamotoi HT31 and B. turicatae consisted of single linear molecules. T

The formation of diploid and triploid hybrids of female grass carp × male blunt snout bream and their 5S rDNA analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hybridization is a useful strategy to alter the genotypes and phenotypes of the offspring. It could transfer the genome of one species to another through combing the different genome of parents in the hybrid offspring. And the offspring may exhibit advantages in growth rate, disease resistance, survival rate and appearance, which resulting from the combination of the beneficial traits from both parents. RESULTS: Diploid and triploid hybrids of female grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus, GC, Cyprininae, 2n = 48) × male blunt snout bream (Megalobrama amblycephala, BSB, Cultrinae, 2

Nonadditive gene expression is correlated with nonadditive phenotypic expression in interspecific triploid hybrids of willow (Salix spp.).

Many studies have highlighted the complex and diverse basis for heterosis in inbred crops. Despite the lack of a consensus model, it is vital that we turn our attention to understanding heterosis in undomesticated, heterozygous, and polyploid species, such as willow (Salix spp.). Shrub willow is a dedicated energy crop bred to be fast-growing and high yielding on marginal land without competing with food crops. A trend in willow breeding is the consistent pattern of heterosis in triploids produced from crosses between diploid and tetraploid species. Here, we test whether differentially express

Partial trisomy of 11q23.3-q25 inherited from a maternal low-level mosaic unbalanced translocation.

Partial trisomy of 11q is characterized by pre/postnatal growth retardation, microcephaly, dysmorphic craniofacial features, cognitive disability, abnormal muscle tone, inguinal hernia, and possible congenital heart defects. Here, we describe a 17-year-old male with a 17.77 Mb-sized [arr 11q23.3-q25 (116,667,559 -134,434,130) ×3] partial trisomy resulting from the unbalanced translocation between chromosomes 11 and 22. The terminal translocation was detected using oligonucleotide array comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) with fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) confirmation. The part

Cytogenetic analysis of Phyllomedusa distincta Lutz, 1950 (2n = 2x = 26), P. tetraploidea Pombal and Haddad, 1992 (2n = 4x = 52), and their natural triploid hybrids (2n = 3x = 39) (Anura, Hylidae, Phyllomedusinae).

BACKGROUND: Natural polyploidy has played an important role during the speciation and evolution of vertebrates, including anurans, with more than 55 described cases. The species of the Phyllomedusa burmeisteri group are mostly characterized by having 26 chromosomes, but a karyotype with 52 chromosomes was described in P. tetraploidea. This species was found in sintopy with P. distincta in two localities of São Paulo State (Brazil), where triploid animals also occur, as consequence of natural hybridisation. We analyse the chromosomes of P. distincta, P. tetraploidea, and their triploid hybrids,

Duckweed genomes and epigenomes underlie triploid hybridization and clonal reproduction.

The Lemnaceae (duckweeds) are the world's smallest but fastest-growing flowering plants. Prolific clonal propagation facilitates continuous micro-cropping for plant-based protein and starch production and holds tremendous promise for sequestration of atmospheric CO2. Here, we present chromosomal assemblies, annotations, and phylogenomic analysis of Lemna genomes that uncover candidate genes responsible for the unique metabolic and developmental traits of the family, such as anatomical reduction, adaxial stomata, lack of stomatal closure, and carbon sequestration via crystalline calcium oxalate

Seasonal variations in botanical and nutritive composition, forage availability and ingestive behavior of grazing goats in the semiarid region.

The aim of this study was to assess how the different seasons of the year impact the botanical composition, availability, and quality of forage in the caatinga, as well as the frequency of ingestion and ingestive behavior of goats in a semi-arid region. The experiment used four crossbred castrated males, with an average weight of 30.2 ± 4.76 kg and an average age of 20 months. The experimental period lasted for 12 months, encompassing two rainy seasons and one dry season within this timeframe, with three replications (data collection) per season. All collected forage was categorized based on i

Unzipped chromosome-level genomes reveal allopolyploid nematode origin pattern as unreduced gamete hybridization.

The formation and consequences of polyploidization in animals with clonal reproduction remain largely unknown. Clade I root-knot nematodes (RKNs), characterized by parthenogenesis and allopolyploidy, show a widespread geographical distribution and extensive agricultural destruction. Here, we generated 4 unzipped polyploid RKN genomes and identified a putative novel alternative telomeric element. Then we reconstructed 4 chromosome-level assemblies and resolved their genome structures as AAB for triploid and AABB for tetraploid. The phylogeny of subgenomes revealed polyploid RKN origin patterns

Heterosis of growth trait regulated by DNA methylation and miRNA in allotriploid fish.

BACKGROUND: Heterosis of growth traits in allotriploid fish has benefited the production of aquaculture for many years, yet its genetic and molecular basis has remained obscure. Now, an allotriploid complex, including two triploids and their diploid inbred parents, has provided an excellent model for investigating the potential regulatory mechanisms of heterosis. RESULTS: Here, we performed a series of analyses on DNA methylation modification and miRNA expression in combination with gene expression in the allotriploid complex. We first established a model of cis- and trans-regulation related

Probable hybridization between S. intercalatum and S. haematobium in western Gabun.

Cases of intestinal schistosomiasis due to S. intercalatum were compared in an area of high prevalence of S. haematobium (Palmeveas) with those in an area of low prevalence of S. haematobium (Lambaréné) in the Gabon. The patients with intestinal schistosomiasis in the area with high prevalence of S. haematobium excreted more eggs resembling S. intercalatum in the urine than those in the low S. haematobium prevalence area. It is suggested that the eggs resembling morphologically S. intercalatum might be hybrids between S. intercalatum and S. haematobium.

Inside daisies' evolutionary tangle: new insights into the hybridogenic genus Anacyclus (Asteraceae, Anthemideae).

BACKGROUND: The genus Anacyclus, distributed across the western Mediterranean Basin, has gained attention as a model system for studying reproductive biology and evolutionary genomics. The genus displays a remarkable diversity in capitulum morphologies, ranging from rayed to rayless forms, while also exhibiting substantial variation in genome size within a context of extensive homoploid hybridisation. However, previous studies are based on fragmented sampling, with the northern Iberian Peninsula underrepresented, and often rely on single individuals per species for genome size estimates. METH

Central cell-produced salvagers promote fertilization recovery and interspecific hybridization.

Angiosperms face frequent fertilization failure in natural environments. To address this challenge, angiosperms have evolved fertilization recovery mechanisms to ensure successful reproduction. The central cell secretes pollen tube attractants to mediate fertilization recovery, but the molecular mechanisms remain poorly defined. In this study, we identified two central cell-produced peptides SALVAGER3 (SAL3) and SAL4 that attract pollen tubes when synergid cell-controlled attraction is compromised. Loss of SALs reduces the ovular capacity for fertilization recovery. These central cell-derived

Distribution response of the diploid hybrid species Hippophae goniocarpa to climate change based on a three-dimensional geographic gradient.

Hippophae goniocarpa has been confirmed by molecular ecological evidence as a diploid hybrid species derived from the natural hybridization of Hippophae rhamnoides subsp. sinensis and Hippophae neurocarpa. Its distribution is strictly confined to sympatric hybrid zones of its parental species, exhibiting neither niche expansion nor significant heterosis. While existing studies have largely focused on the genetic evidence and mechanisms underlying its hybrid origin, the response of its geographic distribution to climate change remains largely unknown. To predict the distribution patterns and dy

Comparison of key quality characteristics and table grape potentials of diploid and triploid hybrid genotypes obtained through cross-breeding.

In many countries worldwide, new grape varieties are being developed through various breeding programs to meet changing consumer demands in the table grape market. In Türkiye, one of the countries with the most widespread table grape production, breeding studies are ongoing in various institutions. These studies generally involve hybridization within V.vinifera and between different species. These hybridizations result in hybrid genotypes with different characteristics. In this study, 51 intraspecific hybrid genotypes and 6 interspecific triploid hybrid genotypes developed through hybridizatio

Toxoplasmosis in South America: a hybridization-driven disease burden?

Human-mediated migrations have reshaped Toxoplasma gondii in South America through massive hybridizations between Old World domestic lineages and wild native populations. We propose that this convergence of domestic adaptation and virulence traits from wild strains underlies the continent's unusually severe disease burden, particularly ocular toxoplasmosis, with major public health implications.

Maternal ploidy shapes reproductive pathways in the triploid hybrid Chrosomus eos × eos-neogaeus.

Elements transferred from a mother to her eggs may strongly influence the phenotype of her offspring. Such maternal effects depend on the genotype of the mother, and while multiple ploidy levels occur naturally in some vertebrate species, studies evaluating the impact of maternal ploidy on offspring are scarce. This paper aimed to test whether maternal ploidy is responsible for the two reproductive phenotypes observed in the triploid fish Chrosomus eos × eos-neogaeus. Indeed, these hybrids have two different maternal origins (diploid or triploid) and display two reproductive phenotypes, ameiot
