The ability to modulate feeding kinematics in response to prey items with different functional properties is likely a prerequisite for most organisms that feed on a variety of food items. A 54-year-old man with a history of tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma treated with chemoradiotherapy and an 18-year history of seropositive rheumatoid arthritis in remission without maintenance therapy presented with right cervical pain and dysphagia for several months. An 8-month-old male Rhodesian ridgeback dog was evaluated for right lingual deviation, mild dysphagia, and inability to retract the tongue. Transverse and three-dimensional computed tomography reconstruction images revealed a transverse fracture of the left epihyoid bone. After 4 months of conservative management, that included assisted feeding of a semi-liquid diet or small volumes of food and analgesics, the dog recovered.

A 37-year-old man presented with an abnormal pharyngeal sensation. Nasendoscopy demonstrated a mass projecting from the left pharyngeal wall, which could be pushed medially with external pressure. A CT scan demonstrated a fracture of the hyoid. On further questioning, the patient stated that he practised Jujitsu, a sport involving various strangling manoeuvres. He underwent a pharyngoscopy and out-fracturing of the hyoid, resulting in complete resolution of his symptoms.
