Congenital generalized hypertrichosis terminalis (CGHT) is a rare condition characterized by universal excessive growth of pigmented terminal hairs and often accompanied with gingival hyperplasia. In the present study, we describe three Han Chinese families with autosomal-dominant CGHT and a sporadic case with extreme CGHT and gingival hyperplasia. We first did a genome-wide linkage scan in a large four-generation family. Our parametric multipoint linkage analysis revealed a genetic locus for CGHT on chromosome 17q24.2-q24.3. Further two-point linkage and haplotyping with microsatellite marker…

BACKGROUND: Lasers and intense pulsed light (IPL) are now used worldwide for prolonged photo-epilation.
OBJECTIVE: To study the side effect … car formation in 75, 10, 64 and one case, respectively. Leukotrichia, folliculitis, and paradoxical hypertrichosis were recorded in 40, 35, and 12 more cases, respectively. Series 2 - PIH and PIHPO were recorded in 28 and four patients. Erosion and crust formation were recorded in 28 patients. Paradoxical effect, leukotrichia and acne formation were seen in 79, …

We report clinical, orofacial and radiological manifestations in a 4-year-old girl and a 33-year-old female with the Gorlin-Chaudhry-Moss (GCM) syndrome. Typical findings in the GCM syndrome are short stature, stocky body build, midface hypoplasia, small eyes, downslanting palpebral fissures, conductive hearing loss, highly arched and narrow palate, malocclusion, abnormally shaped teeth, oligodontia, microdontia, low scalp hairline, hypertrichosis of scalp, face, trunk and limbs and genital hypoplasia. Radiological features include premature synostosis of the coronal suture, brachycephaly, and…

Fetal valproate syndrome results from in utero exposure to valproic acid. It is characterized by a distinctive facial appearence, a cluster of minor and major anomalies, and central nervous system dysfunction. We report on a child exposed prenatally to valproic acid with unusual anomalies. This patient was the first child of young parents. Mother had several generalized seizures one year before this pregnancy, and since than she took valproic acid. Pregnancy was otherwise uneventful. At birth physical examination showed generalized hypertrichosis sparing palms and soles, coarse face, gum hyper…

X-linked congenital generalized hypertrichosis (CGH), an extremely rare condition characterized by universal overgrowth of terminal hair, was first mapped to chromosome Xq24-q27.1 in a Mexican family. However, the underlying genetic defect remains unknown. We ascertained a large Chinese family with an X-linked congenital hypertrichosis syndrome combining CGH, scoliosis, and spina bifida and mapped the disease locus to a 5.6 Mb critical region within the interval defined by the previously reported Mexican family. Through the combination of a high-resolution copy-number variation (CNV) scan and …

Cantu syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder, first described by Cantu in 1982, that is characterized by congenital hypertrichosis, characteristic facial anomalies and cardiomegaly. Recent investigations have revealed that this syndrome is caused by mutations of ABCC9, which encodes a regulatory subunit of SUR2, an adenosine triphosphate-mediated potassium channel opener, expressed not only in smooth muscle but also in hair follicles. However, the abnormalities of skin and hair in patients with Cantu syndrome have not been well explored. We herein report three Japanese patients with Cantu …

Multiple exostoses represent a genetically heterogeneous disorder that may occur isolated or as part of a complex contiguous gene syndrome such as Langer-Giedion syndrome on chromosome 8 and the proximal 11p deletion syndrome on chromosome 11. Here we describe a boy with multiple exostoses, hypertrichosis, mental retardation, and epilepsy due to a de novo deletion on chromosome 8q24. Molecular analysis revealed that the deletion interval overlaps with the Langer-Giedion syndrome and involves the EXT1 gene and additional genes located distal to EXT1, but probably not encompassing the TRPS1 gene…

PURPOSE: To describe hypertrichosis and increased pigmentation of eyelashes associated with topical latanoprost usage.
METHODS: Patients using unilateral topical latanoprost for glaucoma were examined for evidence of hypertrichosis and pigmentation of eyelashes and adjacent hair in the latanoprost-treated eye compared with the nontreated control eye.
RESULTS: In 43 patients receiving unilateral topical latanoprost, hypertrichosis involved ipsilateral terminal eyelashes and regional intermediate hairs of the upper and lower eyelid as well as vellus hair of the lower eyelid skin. Differences i…

Blue light therapy can be used in horses to alter the natural photoperiod and inhibit winter hair coat growth. Seasonal increases in ACTH occur in the fall season but are exaggerated in horses with pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID). Additionally, PPID horses frequently present with hypertrichosis. Thus, blue light therapy was proposed as a potential management tool for hypertrichosis and for investigating the impact of photoperiod manipulation on ACTH. Eighteen PPID horses, aged 18 to 31 yr, from a university-owned research herd were selected and assigned to either the control group…

Pigmented hypertrichotic dermatosis with insulin-dependent diabetes (PHID) syndrome is a recently described autosomal recessive disorder associated with predominantly antibody negative, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. In order to identify the genetic basis of PHID and study its relationship with glucose metabolism, we performed homozygosity mapping in five unrelated families followed by candidate gene sequencing. Five loss-of-function mutations were identified in the SLC29A3 gene which encodes a member of a highly conserved protein family that transports nucleosides, nucleobases and nucle
