Transient bullous dermolysis of the newborn.

A black male newborn delivered by cesarean section developed large bullae on his extremities and in other friction areas soon after birth. No significant family history was obtained. The bullae healed rapidly, leaving hypopigmentation but no scars or milia. Occasional new lesions continued to appear for four months but not after. Reexamination 12 months later showed a normal healthy infant with only residual hypopigmentation in some of the previously involved areas. Histologic and electron microscopic examinations revealed a subepidermal bulla that was ultrastructurally a subbasal lamina separ…

Idiopathic confetti-like leukoderma: A case report of a rare entity.

RATIONALE: Confetti-like leukoderma is an uncommon and intriguing hypopigmentary presentation typically associated with systemic illnesses, dermatologic disorders, or adverse reactions to therapies. Its idiopathic form is extremely rare, making such cases clinically significant and worthy of documentation. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 17-year-old male presented with multiple, bilateral, symmetrical hypopigmented macules measuring 1 to 3 mm, diffusely distributed over the trunk, extremities, neck, forehead, and dorsum of the hands. He denied chemical exposures, systemic symptoms, photosensitivity, or f

Rhododendrol-induced leukoderma update I: Clinical findings and treatment.

Individuals who used skin-whitening cosmetics (quasi-drugs) containing 2% rhododendrol-containing agents, developed leukoderma at a higher frequency than those who have used other skin-whitening cosmetics. The Rhododenol Research Team (RD-Team) was formed and commissioned by Kanebo Cosmetics Inc. to conduct research in treatments of rhododendrol-induced leukoderma (RDL), to evaluate effective treatment options from a medical standpoint, and provide information to a wide range of people. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of various treatments for RDL from a medical perspective, based on

Nevus Depigmentosus: An Update.

Nevus depigmentosus, a disorder of hypopigmentation, occurs in both sexes and all races. It most commonly presents in early infancy and childhood as a nonprogressive hypomelanotic macule. It is considered a form of cutaneous mosaicism due to somatic mutation in pigmentary genes, which results in functional impairment of melanocytes. Clinical forms include localized, segmental, and systemized. Rare cases of nevus depigmentosus may be associated with systemic features. Treatment is usually not required, although certain techniques such as suction-blister grafting, excimer laser, and cosmetic cam…
