OBJECTIVE: To evaluate placement efficacy and reliability of a an intratubal occlusion device for permanent contraception and to assess tolerability and overall satisfaction.
METHODS: Seven hundred seventy women with known parity were recruited to participate in a prospective, multicenter study. Bipolar, low-level radiofrequency energy delivery and porous silicon inserts were used. Inserts were placed bilaterally in the fallopian tube lumen. The authors report 5 cases of uterovesical fistula (UVF) and analyse some of the clinical and therapeutic aspects of this disease. The mean age of these 5 patients was 31.2 +/- 6.9 years. The trauma responsible for the fistula was caesarean section in every case. The presenting complaints were dominated by cyclic haematuria (n = 5). In a prospective randomised study, 31 patients with an unruptured tubal pregnancy were treated either with local and systemic prostaglandins or with local instillation of a hyperosmolar glucose solution. Prostaglandin therapy was successful in 13 of 15 patients and glucose therapy in 16 of 16. 9 women treated with prostaglandins had cramping abdominal pains postoperatively. We present a rare case of a congenital isolated missing segment of the fallopian tube, including hysterosalpingographic and laparoscopic images. We conclude that when this occurs without concomitant müllerian anomalies, the mechanism of development would not be expected to be associated with an increase in renal abnormalities.

The performance of hysterosalpingo contrast sonography (Hy Co Sy) as a first-line, outpatient investigation of tubal patency was examined in 500 consecutive, infertile women, at one centre. Hy Co Sy was completed in 463 (92.6%) cases, using a galactose microbubble contrast agent (Echovist-200) and transvaginal sonography. Saline infusion sonohysterography (SIS) is an important gynaecological diagnostic tool which is little used in Australia. We herein report the findings in 60 women referred for SIS, the procedure being uneventfully performed in 55. Forty-nine of the 60 referrals were for investigation of abnormal uterine bleeding. The technique described allows examination of the uterine cavity and the Fallopian tubes. The article describes uterus duplex and unilateral agenesis of the kidney in two sisters. Although this combined malformation has been described in literature in about 100 cases, it would seem that it occurred in one and the same family in only one case, namely, in mother and daughter. If agenesis of the kidney or a malformation of the uterus is found in a patient, the physician should look for a combined malformation in other members of the family.
