Narrating dementia: self and community in an online forum.

In this article, I examine how individuals diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease use illness narratives to construct community. The ability to narrate is a fundamental component of the self. Using 354 posts by 32 members of an Internet forum, I argue that people with Alzheimer's, whose ability to narrate, and thus create a self, was compromised, nonetheless managed to tell stories of redemption out of which a salvaged self emerged. Narratives are essential for the construction of self, but as I show in this article, they are also essential for the construction of community. Forum memb

Identity processes and coping strategies in college students: short-term longitudinal dynamics and the role of personality.

Coping strategies and identity processes are hypothesized to influence one another over time. This three-wave longitudinal study (N = 458; 84.9% women) examined, for the first time, how and to what extent identity processes (i.e., commitment making, identification with commitment, exploration in breadth, exploration in depth, and ruminative exploration) and coping strategies (i.e., problem solving, social support seeking, and avoidance) predicted one another over time. Cross-lagged analyses indicated that processes of identity exploration seemed especially to be intertwined with different copi

Research review: the importance of callous-unemotional traits for developmental models of aggressive and antisocial behavior.

The current paper reviews research suggesting that the presence of a callous and unemotional interpersonal style designates an important subgroup of antisocial and aggressive youth. Specifically, callous-unemotional (CU) traits (e.g., lack of guilt, absence of empathy, callous use of others) seem to be relatively stable across childhood and adolescence and they designate a group of youth with a particularly severe, aggressive, and stable pattern of antisocial behavior. Further, antisocial youth with CU traits show a number of distinct emotional, cognitive, and personality characteristics compa

Characterizing the motivational orientation of students in higher education: a naturalistic study in three Hong Kong universities.

BACKGROUND: Consideration of motivation in higher education has often been drawn upon theories and research that were based upon school or workplace studies. AIMS: This paper reports an open naturalistic study to better characterize the motivational orientation of students in higher education. METHOD: Open semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with 36 students from three universities in Hong Kong. The analysis used an exploratory grounded theory approach. RESULTS: Motivation was characterized as a framework with six continua with positive and negative poles. On enrolment, stu

Frequent aggression and attribution of hostile intent in people with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities: an empirical investigation.

We investigated whether aggressive individuals have an attributional bias of hostile intent compared to nonaggressive peers. We compared 43 frequently aggressive individuals who had mild to moderate intellectual disabilities with 46 nonaggressive controls on an attributional task. The aggressive participants attributed significantly more hostile intent to protagonists and indicated that they would respond more aggressively than did the controls to provocative scenes, but only when the threat was to themselves. Results suggest that differences in attribution of threat to self play a role in fre

Ego development and ethnic identity formation in rural American Indian adolescents.

Ethnic identity development was assessed in the context of ego development in 12- to 15-year-old students from a Southeastern American Indian community. Self-protective was the modal level and was characterized by awareness of ethnic group membership but little exploration or self-reflection. Impulsive adolescents had the least developed ethnic identities and highest levels of interpersonal vulnerability. Conformist adolescents expressed positive feelings about ethnic group affiliation, described relationships as harmonious, but demonstrated moderate social anxiety. Postconformist adolescents

Threats to identity in survivors of multiple AIDS-related losses.

Survivors of multiple AIDS-related losses face threat to their identity because of the extreme disruption to their personal, assumptive, and interpersonal worlds. This article briefly explains the experience of multiple-loss survivors and includes a case history of a survivor. An individual's sense of self is transformed through identification with the disease. In the gay community, a particularly strong identification with AIDS arose. One outcome of the meshing of an AIDS and homosexual identity is the tendency for gays to assume an identity in relation to HIV ("I am HIV positive/negative.")

Gender, social support and recovery from depressive disorders: a prospective clinical study.

One hundred and thirty men and women attending psychiatric hospitals with depressive disorders were interviewed at the time of their initial contact. After a mean four month interval, 119 were reassessed in order to test the hypothesis that initial levels of social support predict clinical improvement even when other potential risk factors such as age, sex, diagnosis and severity of depression are controlled. Severity and duration of the episode emerged as the only significant background predictors of recovery. The explained variance in recovery from depression due to social support was equal

Psychosocial development in a genetic male surgically reassigned as a female at birth.

This paper explores the psychological development of a child who is genetically a boy (Chromosome 46XY). However, because of multiple defects, a decision was made at birth to assign the child the gender status of a girl. Research has shown that the gender-feedback effect resulting from parent-and-infant interaction even at an early age leads to the development of sexual differences in behavior. Based on this conceptual framework, this paper investigates the complex interaction of the forces that shape sexual nature. It examines the process by which this 11-year-old girl is attempting to establ

A cross-cultural assessment of early cross-gender behavior and familial factors in male homosexuality.

The data presented here are based on interviews of nonclinical homosexual and heterosexual males of comparable social backgrounds in four societies: the United States, Guatemala, Brazil, and the Philippines. Responses to two lines of questioning are analyzed--items having to do with early cross-gender behavior and items having to do with familial factors commonly assumed to be conducive to homosexual orientation. Consistent patterns of early cross-gender behaviors are found in the homosexual groups in all four societies. Inconsistent results are found with respect to the items having to do wit

The magnitude of intimate partner violence during pregnancy in Eldoret, Kenya: exigency for policy action.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is sexual, psychological and physical coercive acts used against persons by intimate partners. When IPV occurs during pregnancy (IPVp), it can result in adverse maternal and pregnancy outcomes. No policy nor practice direction exists to address the rates and risk factors of IPVp in Kenya. Determining the prevalence, types and determinants of IPVp in Western Kenya would aid in the identification of pregnant women affected by and/or at risk of IPVp, as well as informing the development of policy, practices and programmes to support preventive interventions. In thi

Understanding psychotic-like experiences in children in the context of dimensions of psychological problems.

INTRODUCTION: Although psychotic behaviors can be difficult to assess in children, early identification of children at high risk for the emergence of psychotic symptoms may facilitate the prevention of related disorders. Psychotic-like experiences (PLEs), or subthreshold thought and perceptual disturbances, could be early manifestations of psychosis that may predict a future diagnosis of a psychosis-related disorder or nonspecific correlates of a wide range of psychological problems. Additional research is needed regarding how PLEs map onto dimensions of psychopathology in children. METHODS:

Screening for psychosocial risk factors in patients with chronic orofacial pain: recent advances.

BACKGROUND: The authors compiled information about recent advances in screening for psychosocial risk factors considered to be yellow flags for potentially poor outcomes among patients with chronic orofacial pain (most commonly temporomandibular disorders). TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED: The authors conducted MEDLINE searches for the period 1995 through 2002 using the terms "temporomandibular disorders," "assessment" and "psychological," as well as "primary care," "screening" and "psychological disorders." They also searched personal files for relevant articles. RESULTS: Psychosocial dysfunction

Secondary Traumatic Stress of Interpreters Working in Psychotherapy: Protective, Risk and Interpreter-Specific Factors.

BACKGROUND: Interpreters working in psychotherapy are frequently exposed to emotionally demanding situations and may develop secondary traumatic stress. However, quantitative research has largely focused on community interpreters, highlighting the need for data on symptom levels and associated risk factors among interpreters in psychotherapeutic settings. METHODS: Sixty-three eligible interpreters were included. Secondary traumatization, psychological distress, resources, competence, occupational distress, empathy, as well as interpreter-specific aspects such as flight experience and identifi

The psychiatric and psychological sequelae of vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT).

This review paper explores the potential psychiatric and psychological sequelae of vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia, also called vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia, and thrombosis (VITT). In the absence of any literature to date we have extrapolated data from similar conditions, particularly data pertaining to the critical care population. We discuss both the direct and indirect effects of thrombosis, likely psychiatric and psychological challenges during recovery, and ethical issues around vaccination. We have also suggested a comprehensive guide to the psychiatric asse

Laparoscopic bile duct injury: understanding the psychology and heuristics of the error.

Bile duct injury is an important unsolved problem of laparoscopic cholecystectomy, occurring with unacceptable frequency even in the hands of experienced surgeons. This suggests that a systemic predisposition to the injury is intrinsic to cholecystectomy and indicates that an analysis of the psychology and heuristics of surgical decision-making in relation to duct identification may be a guide to prevention. Review of published reports on laparoscopic bile duct injury from 1997 to 2007 was carried out. An analysis was also carried out of the circumstances of the injuries in 49 patients who had
