Case report: community rehabilitation for a patient with incomplete spinal cord lesion.

This is a case report of Mr S, a 43-year-old man with a spinal cord lesion caused by tuberculosis resulting in incomplete paraplegia. He was discharged from hospital with significant residual disability. He received a major part of his rehabilitation in the community from an interdisciplinary neuro rehabilitation team with good results. Because Mr S was overweight, over 20 stones, the therapists had to use considerable creativity and imagination to facilitate his rehabilitation. Mr S's high level of motivation and courage was essential to the success achieved. The purpose of the case report is…

Hypnotizability and Visual Imagery Inside and Outside Hypnosis: A Replication and Extension.

This study investigates the relationship between hypnotizability inside and outside hypnosis. Hypnotizability reflects one's responsiveness to hypnotic suggestions. Imagery vividness seems to be crucial for hypnosis, but the empirical data are inconsistent. We tested 56 participants using the Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire (VVIQ) for outside hypnosis (trait) imagery, the Phenomenology of Consciousness Inventory (PCI) inside hypnosis for state imagery, and the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility (HGSHS) for hypnotizability. No significant correlation was found between hypn

Exploring the Relationship Between Imitated and Associated Mechanism on Performance of Visual Imagery Brain-Computer Interface.

Visual Imagery (VI) can be defined as the manipulation of visual information derived from memory rather than perception. Currently, the brai … ong electrode channels in the occipital lobe, posterior parietal lobe, and temporal lobe during the imagination phase between imitative tasks and associative tasks, as revealed by t-tests (p < 0.05, rejecting the null hypothesis). Overall, imitation mechanisms and associative mechanisms represent the short-term memory (STM) and long-term memory (LTM) features …

Visual mental imagery: Inside the mind's eyes.

What are mental images needed for? A variety of everyday situations calls for us to plan ahead; one of the clever ways our mind prepares and strategizes our next move is through mental simulation. A powerful tool in running these simulations is visual mental imagery, which can be conceived as a way to activate and maintain an internal representation of the to-be-imagined object, giving rise to predictions. Therefore, under normal conditions imagination is primarily an endogenous process, and only more rarely can mental images be activated exogenously, for example, by means of intracerebral sti…

Hearing it right: Evidence of hemispheric lateralization in auditory imagery.

An advantage of the right ear (REA) in auditory processing (especially for verbal content) has been firmly established in decades of behavioral, electrophysiological and neuroimaging research. The laterality of auditory imagery, however, has received little attention, despite its potential relevance for the understanding of auditory hallucinations and related phenomena. In Experiments 1-4 we find that right-handed participants required to imagine hearing a voice or a sound unilaterally show a strong population bias to localize the self-generated auditory image at their right ear, likely the re

Right-sided representational neglect after left brain damage in a case without visuospatial working memory deficits.

Brain damaged patients suffering from representational neglect (RN) fail to report, orient to, or verbally describe contra-lesional elements of imagined environments or objects. So far this disorder has only been reported after right brain damage, leading to the idea that only the right hemisphere is involved in this deficit. A widely accepted account attributes RN to a lateralized impairment in the visuospatial component of working memory. So far, however, this hypothesis has not been tested in detail. In the present paper, we describe, for the first time, the case of a left brain damaged pat

Reality monitoring in anosognosia for hemiplegia.

Anosognosia for hemiplegia (AHP) is a lack of awareness about paralysis following stroke. Recent explanations use a 'forward model' of movement to suggest that AHP patients fail to register discrepancies between internally- and externally-generated sensory information. We predicted that this failure would impair the ability to recall from memory whether information is internally- or externally-generated (i.e., reality monitor). Two experiments examined this prediction. Experiment 1 demonstrated that AHP patients exhibit a reality monitoring deficit for non-motor information (i.e., perceived vs

Cells with persistent twist expression are the embryonic precursors of adult muscles in Drosophila.

twist expression in the embryonic mesoderm of Drosophila declines during germ band retraction to leave a residual population of twist-expressing cells in the late embryo. In the abdomen, the pattern of twist expression is a simple one: a single cell ventrally, pairs of cells laterally and three cells dorsally in each hemisegment. In the thorax, there are patches of cells associated with the imaginal discs and there are additional clusters in A8 and A9. During larval life, the twist-expressing cells proliferate and, in the abdomen, they form ventral, lateral and dorsal clusters, which are the p

An EEG Dataset for Visual Imagery-Based Brain-Computer Interface.

With the advancement of non-invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) technologies, decoding high-level cognitive activity has become pivotal for expanding human-machine interaction. Visual imagery-based BCI (VI-BCI) enable voluntary activation of specific brain regions without external cue, offering novel pathways for immersive applications. However, research on the neural representation of such complex cognitive tasks is still limited, and most existing electroencephalogram (EEG) datasets primarily target motor imagery, hindering the development of robust VI decoding models. Here we present an

The Human Subiculum and Its Role in Spatiotemporal Memory and Mental Imagery.

Traditionally viewed as a mere relay station of the hippocampal formation, the subiculum is emerging as a computational hub of the medial temporal lobe, essential for multiplexed neural representations guiding behavior. While foundational animal research has revealed that its sophisticated cytoarchitecture allows for conjunctive coding of spatiotemporal information, our understanding of how such neural properties translate to human cognitive function remains incomplete. The evolutionary expansion of its anterior region and the enhancement of its anatomical complexity and widespread neocortical

Explicit Motor Imagery Deficits in Individuals With Chronic Pain: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain has been associated with disrupted sensorimotor integration and altered internal body representations. While implicit motor imagery (MI) has been explored in pain populations, explicit MI, defined as the deliberate mental simulation of movement, remains less well understood. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine differences in explicit MI ability, vividness, and mental chronometry between individuals with chronic pain and healthy controls. METHODS: We screened six databases for observational studies comparing explicit MI outcomes in chr

Motor imagery, forward models and the cerebellum: a commentary on Rieger et al., 2023.

In this commentary on Rieger et al., Psychological Research Psychologische Forschung, 2023, I discuss possible ways to test the hypothesis that action imagery is achieved by simulations of actions through an internal forward model. These include brain imaging, perturbation through TMS, and psychophysical tests of adaptation of intended reach actions.

Health anxiety amplifies fearful responses to illness-related imagery.

Severe health anxiety (HA) is characterized by excessive worry and anxiety about one's health, often accompanied by distressing intrusive imagery of signs of a serious illness or potentially receiving bad news about having a life-threatening disease. However, the emotional responses to these illness-related mental images in relation to HA have not been fully elucidated. Emotional responses to mental imagery of 142 participants were assessed in a well-controlled script-driven imagery task, systematically comparing emotional responses to illness-related imagery with neutral and standard fear ima

How pain and body representations transform each other: A narrative review.

Pain, as a multidimensional and subjective experience, intertwines with various aspects of body representation, involving sensory, affective and motivational components. This review explores the bidirectional relationship between pain and body representations, emphasizing the impact of the sense of ownership on pain perception, the transformative impact of pain on motor imagery, the effects associated with vicarious pain perception on body representations and the role of pain in the maintenance of body representations in specific clinical conditions. Literature indicates complex interactions b

A case of trichotillomania and trichophagy: Fantasies of cannibalism.

Cannibalistic fantasies underlie some core mechanisms in psychoanalysis: identification, incorporation, introjection, and internalization. Freud (1917) saw melancholia as an incorporation of the object by devouring it, and Julia Kristeva (1989) takes the melancholic cannibalistic imagination to be a repudiation of loss, a destruction in order to possess the object. The author argues that cannibalism is a useful concept for understanding the double dynamics of trichotillomania and trichophagy - as destructive disconnection followed by incorporation of the hair; both suggest a magical reconnecti…

Mental Imagery: Functional Mechanisms and Clinical Applications.

Mental imagery research has weathered both disbelief of the phenomenon and inherent methodological limitations. Here we review recent behavioral, brain imaging, and clinical research that has reshaped our understanding of mental imagery. Research supports the claim that visual mental imagery is a depictive internal representation that functions like a weak form of perception. Brain imaging work has demonstrated that neural representations of mental and perceptual images resemble one another as early as the primary visual cortex (V1). Activity patterns in V1 encode mental images and perceptual

Intrusive imagery in severe health anxiety: Prevalence, nature and links with memories and maintenance cycles.

Increased understanding of the nature and role of intrusive imagery has contributed to the development of effective treatment protocols for some anxiety disorders. However, intrusive imagery in severe health anxiety (hypochondriasis) has been comparatively neglected. Hence, the current study investigates the prevalence, nature and content of intrusive imagery in 55 patients who met DSM-IV-TR (APA, 2000) criteria for the diagnosis of hypochondriasis. A semi-structured interview was used to assess the prevalence, nature and possible role of intrusive imagery in this disorder. Over 78% of partici

Active and passive scene recognition across views.

Recent evidence suggests that scene recognition across views is impaired when an array of objects rotates relative to a stationary observer, but not when the observer moves relative to a stationary display [Simons, D.J., Wang, R.F., 1998. Perceiving real-world viewpoint changes. Psychological Science 9, 315-320]. The experiments in this report examine whether the relatively poorer performance by stationary observers across view changes results from a lack of perceptual information for the rotation or from the lack of active control of the perspective change, both of which are present for viewp
