BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer remains a significant health burden in China. National policies now allow human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA as a primary screening test, but many health resource-limited counties have not adopted it because programs cannot fund reagents or laboratory platforms. We conducted a multicenter study in 10 pilot counties where HPV DNA screening was introduced with project-supported reagents, platforms, and training.

OBJECTIVE: Analytical methods for measurements of gluten in the low level range of 20-200 ppm of gluten, as required for gluten-free food, have never been endorsed by the Codex Alimentarius. With the aim of investigating standardized and reliable methods for the detection of gliadin in food with detection limits lower than 200 ppm, as proposed by the Codex Alimentarius, the Working Group on Prolamin Analysis and Toxicity (WGPAT) coordinated a large collaborative study to validate a monoclonal antibody based ELISA, which uses an antibody (R5) against rye secalins.

We have previously reported in patients with hyperthyroidism that the red blood cell (RBC) zinc (Zn) concentration reflects the mean thyroid hormone concentration over the preceding months. In the present study, the concentration of RBC Zn was measured by a simple and easy method with a Zn-test Wako kit. Within-run and between-run precision were 1.4% and 1.3%, respectively. The relationship between RBC concentration and dilution was linear. The average recovery was 103%. The in vitro effects of ascorbic acid, acetaminophen, salicylic acid, and gentisic acid on home blood-glucose-measurement systems were studied. Whole blood in the normoglycemic range was spiked with quantities of each study drug at low, moderate, and high therapeutic concentrations. A chemical test for the detection of bacteriuria-Uriglox-has been compared with the results obtained on culturing urine obtained by suprapubic aspiration in 351 pregnant or puerperal women. The results of this comparison show a correlation of 96.9%, both false positive and false negative results occurring.

Chemical stability of the naphthol-azo dye Evans Blue (EB) was examined in the presence of acidic stannous chloride (SnCl(2)), with a view to preparing an instant cold kit. EB was found to be reactive toward this reducing agent, yielding the metal-chelating molecule 1,7-diamino-8-naphthol-2,4-disulfonic acid at high acidity and high stannous concentrations. This reduction reaction was undesirable in the cold kit preparation. The conditions were determined where reduction was inhibited, at pH = 5.0 and with a mole ratio of EB to SnCl(2) = [10:1], effecting the facile preparation of stable cold

A new radiolabeled, bifunctional photoaffinity cross-linking reagent, N-succinimidyl p-benzoyl-[2,3-3H2]dihydrocinnamate, has been synthesized in high yield and with high specific activity. This reagent can be used to append the benzophenone photophore to amino groups of small molecules, such as O-aminoalkylinositol polyphosphates and polypeptides. The resulting tritiated photoaffinity labels can be purified and manipulated in ambient light and can be activated at 360 nm.

The presence of haematuria and proteinuria, detected by reagent strips, was compared with Schistosoma haematobium egg counts in the urines of human subjects from two epidemiologically distinct areas in Ghana and Zambia. In children and adults in both areas, the individual or combined semiquantitative levels of proteinuria and haematuria were related directly to increasing urinary egg counts. Listeria monocytogenes is an important foodborne pathogen that must be controlled to ensure food safety. For the years 2003 and 2004, L. monocytogenes caused 20 deaths per 100 listeriosis cases and was responsible for most food recalls for pathogen contamination.
