A kwashiorkor case due to the use of an exclusive rice milk diet to treat atopic dermatitis.

Although several cases of severe hypoalbuminemia resulting from rice milk have been described in the past, today the use of rice milk without nutritional counseling to treat eczema is still a continuing, poor practice. We describe a kwashiorkor case in an infant with severe eczema exclusively fed with rice milk. It is well documented that rice milk is not a sufficient protein source. Moreover, only a small portion of eczema is triggered by food allergy. In conclusion this case raises the importance of managing dietary changes facing food allergies with responsibility for specialized consensus

Duration of food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis (FPIAP) and the role of intestinal microbiota.

BACKGROUND: Food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis (FPIAP) is the leading cause of rectal bleeding in infants. Tolerance is presumed to develop until the first year of age, although natural history studies are scarce, making the determination of the ideal duration for any intervention, challenging. Intestinal microbiota (IM) is crucial in food allergy development; however, data for FPIAP remain limited. This study aimed to assess FPIAP remission after 3 months of milk avoidance and its correlation with IM longitudinal changes. METHODS: A prospective observational study of infants aged ≤6

The nutritional limitations of plant-based beverages in infancy and childhood.

Breastfeeding, infant formula and cow's milk are basic foods in infant nutrition. However, they are being increasingly replaced either totally or partially by plant-based beverages. The composition of 164 plant-based beverages available in Spain was reviewed based on the nutritional labeling of the package and the manufacturers' webpages. This was compared to the composition of cow's milk and infant formula. In addition, the nutritional disease associated with consumption of plant-based beverages in infants and children was reviewed by means of a literature search in Medline and Embase since 19

The influence of maternal psychosocial characteristics on infant feeding styles.

Maternal feeding styles in infancy and early childhood are associated with children's later risk for overweight and obesity. Maternal psychosocial factors that influence feeding styles during the complementary feeding period, the time during which infants transition from a milk-based diet to one that includes solid foods and other non-milk products, have received less attention. The present study explores how maternal psychosocial factors-specifically self-esteem, parenting self-efficacy, parenting satisfaction, and depression symptoms-influence mothers' infant feeding styles at nine months of

The Michigan Sibling Immunity Birth Study (M-SIBS): Study design protocol for a unique food allergy birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Food allergy is a rapidly escalating public health concern, yet the biologic pathways that link early-life exposures with disease onset remain poorly defined. No existing food-allergy birth cohort has yet paired criterion-standard oral food challenges with comprehensive, family-wide multiomics profiling. OBJECTIVE: The Michigan Sibling Immunity Birth Study (M-SIBS) was established to elucidate early-life genetic and environmental interactions that drive disease. By enrolling entire families, including atopic siblings, the study leverages shared genetics, perinatal sampling, and ho

Safety and Feasibility of Peanut, Tree Nut, and Sesame Oral Immunotherapy in Infants and Toddlers in a Real-World Setting.

BACKGROUND: Oral immunotherapy (OIT) for food allergy has been largely studied in older children within the context of clinical trials, and its availability has historically been limited for younger patients with food allergy. Data have shown that the most impact may actually be seen with the use of OIT in younger infants and toddlers. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and feasibility of OIT in subjects 24 months and younger in a real-world setting using commercially available food products. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of subjects 24 months and younger initiated on OIT for peanut

[Demographic dynamics in the food-nutrition problem: the search for effective strategies in Latin America].

This paper addresses the interrelationship between the food and nutrition problem and population problems in Latin America within a global focus. A basic framework is presented which defines four demographic problems highly related with the food and nutrition situation: The underutilization of the labor force; the accelerated growth of the marginal population; the poor geographic distribution and rapid urbanization; and the high rates of infant and child mortality. Findings from the recent experience of demography in food and nutrition planning in the last four years in Central America and Pan

'Ripple' effect on infant zBMI trajectory of an internet-based weight loss program for low-income postpartum women.

BACKGROUND: Weight loss interventions can have positive 'ripple' effects on untreated partners in the home, but ripple effects on infants are unknown. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether a 12-month internet-based weight loss intervention for postpartum mothers had a positive ripple effect on participants' infants. METHODS: A 12-month cluster randomized, assessor-blind, clinical trial enrolling 371 postpartum women at 12 Women, Infants, Children clinics in CA. Clinics were randomized to standard Women, Infants, Children or an internet-based weight loss intervention for mothers. RESULTS: A total of

Avoidance of hydrolyzed casein by mice.

When casein, a milk protein, is hydrolyzed, it renders human foods that contain it (e.g., hypoallergenic infant formula, cheeses) distasteful to many people. This rejection of hydrolyzed casein (HC)-containing foods has recently been found to also occur in a non-human species (deer, Odocoileus spp.). Identifying other animals that avoid HC would facilitate understanding how and why HC-containing food is often rejected. This study determined whether HC-containing food is avoided by Mus musculus and whether consumption patterns were sensitive to testing conditions, specifically food form (powder

Adverse reactions to food constituents: allergy, intolerance, and autoimmunity.

Food allergies and intolerance represent important health concerns to consumers who are predisposed to these illnesses. Unlike many current food safety issues, food sensitivities are complicated by both complex and multiple individual adverse reactions, which can vary from emotional to pathophysiological ailments. In some instances, the underlying mechanisms that result in the development of food allergies or intolerance have marked differences but produce common symptoms. The present-day diagnosis of these disorders can be impeded by intrinsic limitations in generating accurate information fr

Consumption of organic foods and risk of atopic disease during the first 2 years of life in the Netherlands.

We prospectively investigated whether organic food consumption by infants was associated with developing atopic manifestations in the first 2 years of life. The KOALA Birth Cohort Study in the Netherlands (n 2764) measured organic food consumption, eczema and wheeze in infants until age 2 years using repeated questionnaires. Diet was defined as conventional ( 90 % organic). Venous blood samples taken from 815 infants at 2 years of age were analysed for total and specific IgE. Multivariate logistic regression models were fitted to control for potential confounding factors. Eczema was present in

[Iron nutrition in Mapuche infants fed with human milk (2d phase)].

Blood hemoglobin, serum iron, total iron binding capacity (TIBC) and serum ferritin were measured in 140 healthy rural mapuche (southern Chile's indigenous ethnic group) infants aged 8 to 15 months: 90 had been exclusively breast fed for the first 5 or 6 months of life, then solid foods were introduced but cow's milk was never given to them. The remaining 50, which were all weaned at nearly 4 months of age and then given cow's milk and solid foods at the corresponding age, were designated as controls. Anemia was detected in 4.5% of breast fed infants and in 38% of controls. Evidence of iron de

Caterpillar cereal as a potential complementary feeding product for infants and young children: nutritional content and acceptability.

Micronutrient deficiency is an important cause of growth stunting. To avoid micronutrient deficiency, the World Health Organization recommends complementary feeding with animal-source foods. However, animal-source foods are not readily available in many parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In such areas, caterpillars are a staple in adult diets and may be suitable for complementary feeding for infants and young children. We developed a cereal made from dried caterpillars and other locally available ingredients (ground corn, palm oil, sugar and salt), measured its macro- and micronu

Breastfeeding duration and its relation to weight gain, eating behaviours and positive maternal feeding practices in infancy.

Research examining the relationship between breastfeeding and infant weight has generated conflicting results. Few studies account for significant covariates and many suffer methodological problems such as retrospective self-report. The current study aimed to investigate relationships between breastfeeding duration, infant weight and eating and positive maternal mealtime behaviours, whilst overcoming many of the limitations of previous research. Eighty-one women on low-risk maternity units gave informed consent and were visited at home at 1-week, 1-, 6- and 12-months postpartum. Infants includ

Nutritional composition dataset of approved infant formula powder in China (2017-2024).

Infant formula powder, mimics the composition of breast milk, is specially processed and formulated to meet the nutritional needs of infants aged 0 to 6 months. In this context, China has established a stringent registration-based regulatory system for infant formula products, requiring mandatory pre-market approval and comprehensive evaluation of all formulations before commercialization. The objective of this dataset was to collect the key parameters of registration-approved infant formulas powder in China, including product nomenclature (trade name and generic name), registration identifica
