The prevention of iron dificency anemia in infants.

The prevention of iron deficiency requires attention to the toal feeding regimen as well as to its iron content. The use of fresh cow's milk … ncentration of protein in the formula may play a significant role. What about iron fortification of infant formulas? Itis becoming clear that fullterm infants fed prepared formulas having protein concentrations approaching that of human milk and fed diets containing about 7 mg of iron daily after the age of 3 months infrequently develop biochemical iron deficien …

Infant growth and breastfeeding patterns: The Japan Environment and Children's Study.

Breastfeeding is recommended as the ideal nutrient source for infants, with the benefit of reducing future metabolic risk. Rapid catch-up growth in infancy has been associated with increased later adiposity and cardiometabolic risk. Few studies have evaluated growth and feeding patterns in Japanese infants. This study aimed to clarify growth and feeding patterns in Japanese infants. Participants were children enrolled in the Japan Environment and Children's Study cohort. Height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) at 3-4 and 8-12 mo, and 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3 yr were compared between three feedi

Prevalence, determinants, and reasons for formula feeding among Palestinian mothers in the West Bank: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Exclusive breastfeeding rates in Palestine remain below WHO targets, and formula use is prevalent among infants in the first two years of life. Evidence on the specific factors associated with formula introduction in the Palestinian context is limited. OBJECTIVES: To assess the prevalence of formula feeding among Palestinian mothers of infants aged 0-24 months, identify the primary reasons for formula introduction, and determine the independent sociodemographic, maternal, infant, and perinatal predictors of formula use. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conduct

Nurturing People and Planet: Breastfeeding in Climate Mitigation and Adaptation.

Infant feeding practices have environmental consequences that are largely absent from climate policy discussions. Breastfeeding relies on maternal metabolism and local support systems, whereas commercial milk formula depends on dairy production, industrial processing, packaging, and extensive supply chains. Comparative analyses report higher greenhouse-gas and water burdens for commercial milk formula than for breastfeeding. Globally, commercial milk formula use among infants under 6 months of age adds roughly 5.9-7.5 billion kg of carbon dioxide equivalent annually. Pumping and bottle-feeding

Determinants of Formula Feeding among Mothers in Indonesia: The Role of Digital Media and Microeconomic Factors.

BACKGROUND: Maternal decision-making regarding the use of infant formula milk in Indonesia is shaped by a complex interplay of social, economic, and informational factors. This study aimed to elucidate the determinants of mothers' choices when selecting formula milk in Sorong City, Indonesia, addressing gaps in previous research that overlooked the role of digital media and microeconomic factors in maternal decision-making. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study employed a cross-sectional observational design and was conducted from January to June 2024. A cohort of 180 mothers with children aged 0…

Risk of overweight among adolescents who were breastfed as infants.

CONTEXT: Overweight during adolescence predicts short- and long-term morbidity as well as obesity in adulthood. The prevalence of overweight among adolescents is high and continues to increase. Physiological and behavioral mechanisms and preliminary epidemiologic data suggest that breastfeeding could lower the risk of subsequent obesity in adolescence. OBJECTIVE: To examine the extent to which overweight status among adolescents is associated with the type of infant feeding (breast milk vs infant formula) and duration of breastfeeding. DESIGN, SETTING, AND SUBJECTS: Survey of 8186 girls and …

The effect of diet on feces and jaundice during the first 3 weeks of life.

This study examined the relationship between fecal output and neonatal jaundice in infants exclusively fed either human milk or one of three infant formulas (whey predominant, Enfamil; casein predominant, 3305H; and casein hydrolysate, Nutramigen; all from Mead Johnson, Evansville, IN). Stool output was quantitated during the first 3 weeks of life. Jaundice was assessed by measuring serum bilirubin level and transcutaneous jaundice index. In general, after the fourth day, breast-fed infants produced lower-weight individual wet and dry stools than formula-fed infants. Cumulative wet and dry sto…

Hypophosphatemia and hypercalciuria in small premature infants fed human milk: evidence for inadequate dietary phosphorus.

Phosphorus and calcium balance was measured prospectively in stable premature infants (less than or equal to 1600 gm) fed human milk or a standard commercial formula. Throughout the study, the P and Ca intakes of the infants fed human milk were two to three times less than those of infants fed formula. Infants fed human milk showed low serum P and normal serum Ca concentrations, complete renal reabsorption of P, and elevated renal Ca excretion. The net effect in infants fed human milk was a 50% reduction in the P and Ca retention, compared with the formula-fed group. Despite the unfavorable P

Perceived insufficient milk among primiparous, fully breastfeeding women: Is infant crying important?

Breastfeeding mothers often report perceived insufficient milk (PIM) believing their infant is crying too much, which leads to introducing formula and the early abandonment of breastfeeding. We sought to determine if infant crying was associated with reported PIM (yes/no) and number of problems associated with lactation (lactation problem score [LPS] 6-point Likert scale) before formula introduction. Primiparous breastfeeding mothers were recruited at birth and visited at 1, 2 and 4 weeks. Among those fully breastfeeding at 1 week (N = 230), infant crying variables based on maternal reports we

Associations of parental, pregnancy and infant characteristics with appetite traits in infancy: Results from a prospective study of infants in Cyprus.

Parental and infant factors (eg pre-pregnancy maternal BMI, gestational body weight, breast or formula feeding) are known to influence the risk of developing obesity in later life, but whether this is influenced by their effects on appetite traits is unknown. We investigated the influence of developmental factors associated with obesity on appetite traits in infancy. Appetite traits were assessed by maternal completion of the Baby Eating Behaviour Questionnaire at 2-4 weeks and 6 months and the Child Eating Behaviour Questionnaire at 12 months in a cohort of 432 infants born in Cyprus and foll

The calming effect of a maternal breast milk odor on the human newborn infant.

We examined the effects of the odors from mother's milk, other mother's milk and formula milk on pain responses in newborns undergoing routine heelsticks. Forty-eight healthy infants were assigned to four groups, an own mother's breast milk odor group (Own MM), another mother's breast milk odor group (Other MM), a formula milk odor group (Formula M) and a control group. To assess infant distress in response to the heelsticks, their crying, grimacing and motor activities were recorded during the experiment as behavioral indices of the pain response. After the heelstick, the behavioral indices o

A Comparative Evaluation of the Acidogenic Potential of Lactose-based, Soy-based, Protein Hydrolysate-based, and Iron-based Milk Formulas Based on Dental Plaque pH, Salivary pH, and Buffering Capacity: An In Vivo Study.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding is the gold standard nutrition for infants. However, the inability of infants to latch on, maternal complaints of sore or painful nipples, and insufficient milk supply frequently result in early breastfeeding cessation. Hence, milk has subsequently been replaced by infant formula milks of high quality, which serve as an alternate source of nutrition for infants. There also has been a rising concern among parents and caretakers regarding the cariogenic potential of the various milk formulas available in the market due to the presence of fermentable carbohydrat…

Use of prick-tests in the screening of immediate allergy to protein: 16 cases.

BACKGROUND: Allergy to protein hydrolysates seem to be on the rise but screening is difficult because of the wide range of symptoms. The goal of our study was to improve the screening process by skin prick testing infants with an anaphylactic form of allergy to cow's milk. METHODS: We studied 92 infants who were allergic to cow's milk. The diagnosis was based on the results of skin prick tests, specific IgE assays, and oral food challenges. The skin prick tests were performed using a number of protein hydrolysate formulae and a synthetic amino acid-based formula available in France. RESULTS:

Defining Low Milk Supply: A Data-Driven Diagnostic Framework and Risk Factor Analysis for Breastfeeding Women.

Background: Current low milk supply (LMS) definitions use subjective maternal perceptions or arbitrary thresholds for 24 h milk production (MP), potentially misclassifying cases. This study aimed to re-evaluate the definition of LMS using data-driven approaches and investigate associated maternal risk factors. Methods: Lactating mothers 4-26 weeks postpartum (n = 460) provided demographic, obstetric, and infant data and measured 24 h MP and infant milk intake using the test-weighing method. Infant growth was calculated as their weight-for-age z-score. Latent profile analysis, receiver operatin

Postdischarge Nutrition of Preterm Infants: Breastfeeding, Complementary Foods, Eating Behavior and Feeding Problems.

In preterm infants, the key goals of nutrition are to establish adequate growth and to contribute to appropriate neurodevelopmental outcome. In this context, the postdischarge period is crucial to establish catch-up growth and avoid wrong metabolic programming caused by overfeeding. Breastfeeding is strongly recommended, and for preterm infants the European Society for Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) suggests fortifying breastmilk after discharge up to term in appropriate growing infants and up to 3 months in growth-retarded infants. If breastfeeding is not possible, post

Sugar malabsorption in healthy neonates estimated by breath hydrogen.

Carbohydrate malabsorption in 110 healthy, term neonates was studied by estimating expired hydrogen (H2) before and after a feed on day 6 or 7. Carbohydrate malabsorption was assumed to be present if the infant excreted > 20 parts per million (ppm) H2. The frequency of carbohydrate malabsorption in 49 breast-fed infants was 25% (n = 12), in 35 infants fed a 7.5% lactose formula it was 31% (n = 11), in 26 infants fed a formula containing 1% lactose and 7.3% maltodextrin it was 15% (n = 4). These differences in frequency were not significant. Peak H2 concentration of the malabsorbers in each gro

Iron status with different infant feeding regimens: relevance to screening and prevention of iron deficiency.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the benefit of screening for anemia in infants in relation to their previous diet. The iron status of 854 nine-month-old infants on three different feeding regimens and on a regimen including iron dextran injection was determined by analysis of hemoglobin, serum ferritin, and erythrocyte protoporphyrin levels and of serum transferrin saturation. Infants were categorized as having iron deficiency if two or three of the three biochemical test results were abnormal and as having iron deficiency anemia if, in addition, the hemoglobin level was less than
