The control of hepatitis B virus infection with vaccine in Japanese nursery schools.

In 1983, the efficacy of an inactivated hepatitis B vaccine was assessed among children in nursery schools in which there was at least one hepatitis B surface antigen-positive child with hepatitis B e antigen. Of the 496 children who completed the protocol, 243 (aged 2.7 +/- 1.1 years) in six of the nursery schools received three injections of the vaccine. In five other nursery schools, 253 children (aged 2.3 +/- 1.0 years) did not receive the vaccine and were used as the control group. No side effects resulted from vaccination. Two doses of the vaccine induced antibodies in 70.8% of the vacci

Berberine: A Natural pqs System Inhibitor in Pseudomonas aeruginosa for Foodborne Infection Control.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa poses a significant threat to food safety. The P. aeruginosa pqs quorum sensing system regulates spoilage potential. Using natural QS-targeting compounds to attenuate virulence represents a promising approach to mitigating bacterial contamination and spoilage. This study screened traditional Chinese medicine monomers and identified berberine as a pqs system inhibitor. Berberine reduced P. aeruginosa 2-heptyl-3-hydroxy-4(1H)-quinolone (PQS) production, pyocyanin biosynthesis, biofilm formation, and motility without affecting bacterial growth. Genetic analysis revealed tha

Simulation of healthcare professional teams in infection prevention and control: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are a major public health concern. Although interprofessional education (IPE) is recognized as a promising strategy, there is limited robust evidence demonstrating its effectiveness in reducing infection rates in healthcare settings. AIM/OBJECTIVE: To identify studies on interprofessional simulation for healthcare teams focused on infection prevention and control (IPC). METHODS: This scoping review followed the PRISMA-ScR checklist and was registered on the OSF platform (https://osf.io/bj6uc/). Six databases (MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science

Bioactive granular hydrogels for infection control and immune microenvironment remodeling in wound regeneration.

Bacterial infection remains a major barrier to effective wound healing by disrupting immune homeostasis, sustaining chronic inflammation and impairing tissue regeneration. Herein, we present a green, sustainable strategy for fabricating antibacterial, immunomodulatory bioactive granular hydrogels (GHs) for infected wound regeneration. An amino-alcohol ether prepolymer (MP) was first synthesized via epoxy-amine click chemistry and subsequently complexed with the natural polyphenol tannic acid (TA), thereby triggering phase-separation-driven supramolecular self-assembly into GHs without addition

Vertebral remodeling with denosumab after infection control in Escherichia coli spondylodiscitis: case report.

Infectious spondylodiscitis can cause progressive vertebral destruction and instability even after infection control, and some patients decline or are unsuitable for surgery. We report a 67-yr-old man with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension who developed Escherichia coli bacteremia and subsequent infectious spondylodiscitis. Four months after treatment of a traumatic open tibial wound with debridement and split-thickness skin grafting, he presented with progressive low back pain, intermittent fever, and systemic illness with acute kidney injury and hepatic dysfunction.…

Decoupling musculoskeletal damage from antiviral control: the NLRP3 inflammasome in arthritogenic alphavirus infection.

Mosquito-borne arthritogenic alphaviruses, including chikungunya virus (CHIKV), Ross River virus (RRV), and Mayaro virus (MAYV), cause acute febrile polyarthralgia and can leave a substantial proportion of patients with persistent or relapsing musculoskeletal disease. In many cohorts, chronic arthritis continues after systemic viremia has declined, suggesting that late tissue pathology is sustained largely by host inflammatory programs rather than by ongoing productive viral replication. This Mini Review examines the NLRP3 inflammasome as a pathogenic node linking viral danger sensing to chron

IL-17A-producing γδ T cells control pulmonary Mycobacterium abscessus infection in mice.

The specific role of γδ T cells in non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infections remains incompletely understood. Here we characterized the immune landscape of pulmonary tissues from a Mycobacterium abscessus-infected NTM mice model. Interleukin-17 (IL-17)A+ γδ T cells were essential for controlling M. abscessus infection by directly eliminating extracellular bacteria. These cells conferred protective immunity in two mouse models of infection combined with either pulmonary fibrosis or a lack of functional interferon-gamma (IFNγ)-mediated immunity. IL-17A+ γδ T cells exerted bactericidal activi

Postoperative risk of infection with klebsiella in adults - a retrospective case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Hospital-acquired infections with Klebsiella spp. and emerging multi-drug-resistant strains are a persistent concern. Identifying high-risk groups is crucial for the evaluation of preventive interventions such as vaccines. We determined the incidence and developed prediction models for postsurgical klebsiella infections in adult elective surgery patients. METHODS: This multi-centre retrospective case-control study, in seven European hospitals, included patients ≥50 years old who underwent elective surgery between 2012 and 2021. Using multi-variable logistic regression, we modelled

Diagnostic radiography students' neonatal mobile X-ray imaging infection prevention and control practices.

INTRODUCTION: Neonates represent a unique population with complex medical needs. Diagnostic medical imaging is crucial for diagnosing and treating their conditions, often utilising mobile imaging equipment. A key aspect of providing mobile X-ray imaging for neonates is infection prevention and control (IPC). This study investigated the IPC practices of diagnostic radiography students conducting mobile X-ray imaging in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). METHOD: This quantitative descriptive cross-sectional study employed purposive sampling and used an online questionnaire to collect data f

Society-Based Infection Prevention and Control Guidelines After COVID-19: A Delphi Study.

Background: Current infection prevention and control guidelines, protocols, and practices for public, outside healthcare facilities are not adequate as evidenced by increasing rates of infections and outbreaks. This study proposed to formulate a consensus on the guidelines that would then govern future public health-related infection prevention and control practices. Methods: A three-round Delphi technique was used to generate experts' consensus on the development and required modifications of the current IPC guidelines to address public safety. Eighteen infection prevention and control practi

Ascending infection is the leading cause of antepartum hemorrhage: A case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Placental abruption is a significant obstetric complication characterized by the premature separation of the placenta from the uterine wall, affecting 2-3 per 100 pregnancies. This condition presents a dual diagnostic challenge: obstetricians rely on clinical signs such as antepartum hemorrhage, abdominal pain, and ultrasound findings to suspect abruption, often leading to emergency cesarean delivery. Conversely, pathologists diagnose abruption through macroscopic and microscopic examination of placental tissue, identifying hematomas and signs of maternal vascular malperfusion. N

The association between Parkinson disease and Toxocara infection/exposure: A case-control study.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a prevalent neurological disorder and the second most common neurodegenerative disease. Research has explored the impact of infectious agents, such as the parasites, on neurological conditions, including PD. Given the limited studies worldwide and in Iran, this study aims to investigate the relationship between Toxocara infection and PD. This case-control study involved 91 PD patients and 90 healthy controls. After obtaining consent, serum samples and questionnaires were collected. All sera were examined using an ELISA test for IgG antibodies against Toxocara canis.

Nitazoxanide modulates inflammation but fails to control parasitemia in experimental Trypanosoma cruzi infection.

Chagas disease, caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, currently lacks effective therapies that target both bloodstream and muscle-resident parasites. Given the limitations of current treatments, such as benznidazole and nifurtimox, complementary chemical strategies are crucial not only for parasite elimination but also for modulating host inflammatory responses. In this study, female C57BL/6 mice were infected with the Y strain of T. cruzi (DTU TcII) and treated orally with nitazoxanide (NTZ) twice daily for 10 days at doses ranging from 100 to 1200 mg/kg. We evaluated parasitemia, survival rates, seru
