Caregivers' perceptions, knowledge, and perceived barriers to pediatric procedural pain management: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Pain from medical procedures can have negative effects on children and adolescents (eg, healthcare avoidance), and is often not adequately prevented and treated. Best practices emphasize the important role of caregivers in procedural pain management. OBJECTIVES: To investigate caregivers' perceptions, knowledge, and behaviours related to their children's procedural pain management and to describe the barriers perceived by caregivers encountered during the management of their child's procedural pain. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional online survey of caregivers with children a

"This is What a Speculum Looks Like!" Effects of Medical Instrument Demonstration and Message Framing in Pap Test Videos on Social Media.

The rise of social media short-form videos has led to an increase in health professionals demonstrating medical procedures online, including Pap tests for cervical cancer screening. This study uses an online experiment to investigate the effects of showing the vaginal speculum in short-form social media videos (i.e. TikTok videos) encouraging Pap tests, alongside the impact of framing the content to address common barriers to testing. The findings reveal the presence of the speculum led to significantly higher ratings of fear though the level of fear was modest. Videos framed to address knowle

The contamination effect on recognition memory: adding evidence of an adaptive mnemonic tuning.

Previous research has revealed enhanced free recall for neutral items previously associated with disease-causing agents, compared to when they are associated with neutral information; this has been termed the contamination effect. However, it remains unknown whether this effect extends to recognition memory and, if so, on what processes it would rely (i.e., recollection or familiarity). This is a relevant question to establish the generality and enrich our knowledge about the effect on the various processes in which memory operates. We employed a Yes/No recognition task with Remember/Know judg

Prediction of Cisplatin-Induced Acute Kidney Injury Using an Interpretable Machine Learning Model and Electronic Medical Record Information.

Predicting cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury (Cis-AKI) before its onset is important. We aimed to develop a predictive model for Cis-AKI using patient clinical information based on an interpretable machine learning algorithm. This single-center retrospective study included hospitalized patients aged ≥ 18 years who received the first course of cisplatin chemotherapy from January 1, 2011, to December 31, 2020, at Nagoya City University Hospital. Cis-AKI-positive patients were defined using the serum creatinine criteria of the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes guideline within 14 days

The Ambiguous Cue Task: Measurement reliability of an experimental paradigm for the assessment of interpretation bias and associations with mental health.

Interpretation biases in the processing of ambiguous affective information are assumed to play an important role in the onset and maintenance of emotional disorders. Reports of low reliability for experimental measures of cognitive biases have called into question previous findings on the association of these measures with markers of mental health and demonstrated the need to systematically evaluate measurement reliability for measures of cognitive biases. We evaluated reliability and correlations with self-report measures of mental health for interpretation bias scores derived from the Ambigu

Life-limiting fetal conditions and pregnancy continuation: parental decision-making processes.

OBJECTIVES: When parents are facing a life-limiting fetal condition (LLFC), decision making about prenatal and neonatal care is very stressful. To participate in successful shared decision making, interdisciplinary care teams need to understand factors that parents consider and the process by which they make decisions about care of their baby. METHODS: This study reports on findings about parental decision making from a larger longitudinal, naturalistic study of parents' experiences of continuing pregnancy with an LLFC. Mothers and fathers over 18 were interviewed in person, on phone or via v

Paradoxical mineralocorticoid receptor-mediated effect in fear memory encoding and expression of rats submitted to an olfactory fear conditioning task.

There is general agreement that the substantial modification in memory and motivational states exerted by corticosteroids after a traumatic experience is mediated in complementary manner by the mineralocorticoid (MR) and glucocorticoid (GR) receptors. Here we tested the hypothesis that pharmacological manipulation of MR activity would affect behavioral strategy and information storage in an olfactory fear conditioning (OFC) task. Male Wistar rats were submitted to the OFC with different training intensities. We observed that following high intensity OFC acquisition, a set of defensive coping s

Abnormal brain activity during a reward and loss task in opiate-dependent patients receiving methadone maintenance therapy.

A core feature of human drug dependency is persistence in seeking and using drugs at the expense of other life goals. It has been hypothesized that addiction is associated with overvaluation of drug-related rewards and undervaluation of natural, nondrug-related rewards. Humans additionally tend to persist in using drugs despite adverse consequences. This suggests that the processing of both rewarding and aversive information may be abnormal in addictions. We used fMRI to examine neural responses to reward and loss events in opiate-dependent patients receiving methadone maintenance treatment (M

Using case description information to reduce sensitivity to bias for the attributable fraction among the exposed.

The attributable fraction among the exposed ( A F e ) is the proportion of disease cases among the exposed that could be avoided by eliminating the exposure. In this article, we propose a new approach to reduce sensitivity to hidden bias for conducting statistical inference on the A F e by leveraging case description information such as subtype of cancer. The proposed method is examined through an asymptotic tool, design sensitivity, simulation studies, and case studies of alcohol consumption and the risk of postmenopausal invasive breast cancer utilizing information on the subtype of canc

Preference of patient information leaflets over standard drug monographs by patients prescribed hydrochlorothiazide, nifedipine and enalapril.

Standard drug monographs (SDMs) have been described as deficient in providing information in a manner simplified enough for patient reading. The aim of this study was to design patient information leaflets for hydrochlorothiazide, nifedipine and enalapril with content indicated by patients as relevant and to evaluate them against the SDM. Patient information leaflet (PIL) for each drug was designed to contain information on name, use of drug, how it works, how it is to be taken, common side effects, storage, missed dose action, things to avoid and when to contact the physician. Appropriateness

The impact of social support cues on pain-related fear and avoidance learning.

Recently, social support cues have been suggested to be "unique" safety signals possessing fear inhibitory properties. Yet, previous research only included autonomic fear measures (i.e., skin conductance) in passive fear conditioning procedures, therefore the impact of social support cues on operant pain-related avoidance learning and self-reported fear and pain-expectancy is unknown. In contrast, previous research showed that social threat cues facilitate pain-related fear learning, but their impact on operant pain-avoidance learning has never been investigated. Pain-free participants (N = 81

Regulation of emotion in ADHD: can children with ADHD override the natural tendency to approach positive and avoid negative pictures?

Studies have demonstrated inefficient use of antecedent-focused emotion regulation strategies in children with ADHD attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In the current study we tested for the first time if ADHD is also associated with difficulties in response-focused strategies by measuring the ability to override action tendencies induced by emotional information. Performance data on a computer-based approach-avoidance paradigm of 28 children with ADHD and 38 typically developing children between 8 and 15 years of age were analyzed, by comparing a congruent condition in which they

Attachment predicts daily catastrophizing and social coping in women with pain.

OBJECTIVE: To examine how anxious and avoidant adult attachment styles moderate within-day associations between pain intensity, pain catastrophizing, and social coping. METHOD: Two-hundred and ten women with osteoarthritis and/or fibromyalgia from the community completed an initial questionnaire assessing attachment dimensions and a 30 day electronic diary. Outcomes were measured with daily ratings of pain intensity, catastrophizing, and social coping. RESULTS: Attachment anxiety showed a context-specific relation with catastrophizing: days of increased pain predicted greater increases in pa

Modifying avoidance in social anxiety: The effects of a cognitive-behavioural instruction on extinction learning.

Although cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) with exposure is the first-line treatment for Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), its efficacy is lower for SAD than for other anxiety disorders. One possible reason is that CBT may not effectively target the key maintaining features of SAD: persistent avoidance and heightened threat expectancy. Experimental research shows that individuals with elevated social anxiety exhibit generalised avoidance and persistent threat beliefs in conditioning paradigms, yet it remains unclear whether brief cognitive-behavioural (CB) strategies can modify these fear respo

Women's experience of pain during cesarean delivery due to inadequate neuraxial anesthesia without conversion to general anesthesia: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Neuraxial anesthesia is the preferred technique for cesarean delivery, yet some women experience inadequate anesthesia and intraoperative pain. Little is known about the experiences and consequences when conversion to general anesthesia does not occur. This study explored women's experiences of intraoperative pain during cesarean delivery without conversion to general anesthesia. METHODS: This qualitative study included women who experienced inadequate neuraxial anesthesia during cesarean delivery without conversion to general anesthesia within the previous four years. Environmental enrichment influences the relationship between lateralization and neophobia in zebrafish larvae.

Neophobia, the aversion to novelty, is a conserved survival trait that influences individuals’ decision-making. In many species, juveniles showed less avoidance of novelty than adults, likely due to their limited experience and their need to gather environmental information. A challenging question is how environmental factors shape sensory processing and behavioural responses. Due to the rapid development of their nervous system and high sensitivity to environmental conditions, zebrafish (Danio rerio) represent a valuable model for investigating the phenotypic plasticity of neophobia. Identifying Opportunities to Discuss Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis During Contraceptive Coaching Discussions With Urban Adolescent Women.

PURPOSE: HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) reduces HIV transmission and is approved for adolescents aged 12-17 years. Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) have modest PrEP uptake rates, while many receive reproductive health counseling. We sought to identify opportunities for incorporating PrEP education in contraceptive counseling delivered to AGYW. METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of data from the Health Coaching for Contraceptive Continuation pilot study, which supported contraceptive use among AGYW. Participants were 14-22 years old, sexually active with males, and not desi

Screening and Counseling Adolescents and Young Adults: A Framework for Comprehensive Care.

Healthy development is likely to occur when an adolescent's risk factors are limited and when protective factors are fostered. Healthy development is further encouraged when youth feel valued, empowered, and form healthy social connections. Threats to the well-being of adolescents typically result from experimentation and psychosocial stressors. SSHADESS (strengths, school, home, activities, drugs, emotions/eating, sexuality, safety) is a mnemonic to facilitate collection of psychosocial history of critical life dimensions emphasizing strengths within a youth's life experience instead of solel
