Logistics modelling: improving resource management and public information strategies in Florida.

One of the most time-sensitive and logistically-challenging emergency response operations today is to provide mass prophylaxis to every man, woman and child in a community within 48 hours of a bioterrorism attack. To meet this challenge, federal, state and local public health departments in the USA have joined forces to develop, test and execute large-scale bioterrorism response plans. This preparedness and response effort is funded through the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Cities Readiness Initiative, a programme dedicated to providing oral antibiotics to an entire populatio

@neurIST: infrastructure for advanced disease management through integration of heterogeneous data, computing, and complex processing services.

The increasing volume of data describing human disease processes and the growing complexity of understanding, managing, and sharing such data presents a huge challenge for clinicians and medical researchers. This paper presents the @neurIST system, which provides an infrastructure for biomedical research while aiding clinical care, by bringing together heterogeneous data and complex processing and computing services. Although @neurIST targets the investigation and treatment of cerebral aneurysms, the system's architecture is generic enough that it could be adapted to the treatment of other dis

Solar UV forecasts: a randomized trial assessing their impact on adults' sun-protection behavior.

This study examined the effectiveness of solar UV forecasts and supporting communications in assisting adults to protect themselves from excessive weekend sun exposure. The study was conducted in Australia, where 557 adult participants with workplace e-mail and Internet access were randomly allocated to one of three weather forecast conditions: standard forecast (no UV), standard forecast + UV, standard forecast + UV + sun-protection messages. From late spring through summer and early autumn, they were e-mailed weekend weather forecasts late in the working week. Each Monday they were e-mailed

Internet advertising of artificial tanning in Australia.

Artificial tanning, defined as deliberate exposure to ultraviolet rays produced by artificial tanning devices, is a new and emerging public health issue in Australia and globally. Epidemiological research suggests that artificial tanning may contribute to the incidence of melanoma, nonmelanoma skin cancer as well as other health problems. Given that Australia has a high incidence of skin cancer, we have undertaken a study to explore how artificial tanning has been promoted to its users. The aim was to analyze the completeness and accuracy of information about artificial tanning. A content anal

Human babesiosis--an unrecorded reality. Absence of formal registry undermines its detection, diagnosis and treatment, suggesting need for immediate mandatory reporting.

Human babesiosis, caused by parasitic protozoa of erythrocytes, has escaped usual associates--lower mammals. Thriving in tick guts, it has spread inland from the coasts of America, adopting mankind as a host. Babesia spp. threaten life quality of unsuspecting humans in quickly expanding territories worldwide, including the state of Pennsylvania, USA. The causative spirochetes of Lyme disease often similarly co-exist in ticks. Singly or together they may, by causing persistent and chronic infections, duplicate any symptom in the medical literature--including depression and hypochondriasis. Phys

Smoking cessation or reduction in pregnancy treatment methods: a meta-evaluation of the impact of dissemination.

Active and passive exposure to tobacco smoke during pregnancy and infancy is the most serious and preventable cause of adverse maternal, fetal, and infant outcomes in the United States. The multiple risks of tobacco exposure to mothers and infants are definitive, and the clinical and economic benefits of cessation have been documented. This article provides a synopsis of the state of the science and art in this specialized area and reviews the evidence for validity of patient assessment methods and the effectiveness of smoking cessation/reduction treatments for pregnant women. A synthesis of 4

Some principles of the development of a clinical database/national register of selected inflammatory rheumatic diseases in the Czech Republic.

According to the World Health Organisation, rheumatic diseases are likely to go on occupying a prominent place worldwide. As to US statistics, rheumatic diseases are currently the most frequent chronic disorders and leading cause of disability. The development of functional clinical database or rheumatic diseases represents an essential condition how to acquire necessary epidemiological and other information on disorders under study. In 1999-2003, Institute of Rheumatology in cooperation with EuroMISE have developed clinical database/national register of selected systemic inflammatory rheumati

Meningococcal vaccine information on YouTube in Türkiye: A cross-sectional analysis of content quality and reliability.

Meningococcal infections represent a significant public health concern due to their high mortality and morbidity rates. In Turkey, meningococcal vaccines are not included in the routine immunization schedule, and families increasingly seek health-related information through digital platforms. YouTube, as a widely used video-sharing platform, has the potential to influence public attitudes toward vaccination; however, concerns remain regarding the reliability and quality of its content. This study aimed to evaluate the characteristics and quality of YouTube videos related to meningococcal vacci

Prospective Harmonization, Common Data Elements, and Sharing Strategies for Multicenter Pre-Clinical Traumatic Brain Injury Research in the Translational Outcomes Project in Neurotrauma Consortium.

Effective team science requires procedural harmonization for rigor and reproducibility. Multicenter studies across experimental modalities (domains) can help accelerate translation. The Translational Outcomes Project in NeuroTrauma (TOP-NT) is a pre-clinical traumatic brain injury (TBI) consortium charged with establishing and validating noninvasive TBI assessment tools through team science. Here, we present practical approaches for harmonization of TBI research across five centers providing needed vocabulary and structure to achieve centralized data organization and use. This includes data sh

International collaborative actions and transparency to understand, diagnose, and develop therapies for rare diseases.

Rare diseases, which affect over 350 million people worldwide and frequently go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for years, suffer from sparse and dispersed medical knowledge leading to even rarer approved and effective therapeutic options for patients. A vast, unmet need for research and investment to advance diagnostic capabilities and therapeutic development must be confronted, despite the myriad of challenges faced. Several fundamental shifts are changing the landscape of rare diseases research and development, particularly with the application and extension of results to common diseases and th

User and researcher collaborations in mental health in low and middle income countries: a case study of the EMPOWER project.

BACKGROUND: Increasing recognition has been given to the interaction of users and researchers in shaping the perspective and practice of mental health care. However, there remains very little evidence exploring how this interaction works, particularly in low and middle income countries. The aim of this study was to explore experiences of how users and researchers worked together to communicate research, using a case study of the EMPOWER project. METHODS: The study followed a case-study approach. EMPOWER was a project that sought to strengthen the capacity of user organizations in India, Kenya

Wildlife disease and risk perception.

Risk perception has an important influence on wildlife management and is particularly relevant to issues that present health risks, such as those associated with wildlife disease management. Knowledge of risk perceptions is useful to wildlife health professionals in developing communication messages that enhance public understanding of wildlife disease risks and that aim to increase public support for disease management. To promote knowledge of public understanding of disease risks in the context of wildlife disease management, we used a self-administered questionnaire mailed to a stratified r

Are nurses prepared to respond to a bioterrorist attack: a narrative synthesis.

AIM: To report a review and narrative synthesis conducted to analyse and evaluate nurses' preparedness to respond to a bioterrorist event. BACKGROUND: The anthrax attack on the USA in 2001 resulted in the development of global response strategies for future bioterrorist events. However, despite these actions, it remains unclear whether nurses are prepared to respond to such events. DATA SOURCES: A search for relevant research articles was conducted using the MEDLINE, CINAHL, BNI, and EMBASE databases to locate articles published in the period 1996-March 2010. DESIGN: Narrative synthesis. R

Dreams and nightmares: practical and ethical issues for patients and physicians using personal health records.

Electronic health records for patients, personal health records (PHRs), have become increasingly popular among policy makers and purchasers, but uptake among patients and physicians has been relatively slow. PHRs have varying uses that might make them more or less appealing to different stakeholders. The three core uses for PHRs - promoting communication, data use, and patient responsibility - each raises a set of potential practical and financial dilemmas. But some ethical concerns are also at play, some of which are rarely recognized as values-based barriers to the use of PHRs. Recognizing t

Communicating stereotype-relevant information: is factual information subject to the same communication biases as fictional information?

Factual information is more frequently read and discussed than fictional information. However, research on the role of communication in shaping stereotypes has focused almost exclusively on fictional narratives. In Experiments 1 and 2 a newspaper article containing information about heroin users was communicated along chains of 4 people. No stereotype-consistency bias was observed. Instead, a greater proportion of stereotype-inconsistent information was communicated than was stereotype-consistent or -neutral information. Three further experiments investigated explanations for the difference be
