Mental health help-seeking behaviour among migrant workers and migrant domestic workers in Singapore: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Migrant workers (MWs) and migrant domestic workers (MDWs) in Asia face elevated risks of mental health issues due to factors like long working hours, abuse, and family separation. In Singapore, despite established support systems, formal help-seeking remains low. This study aimed to investigate the mental health help-seeking behaviors, preferences, and perceived barriers and facilitators among MWs and MDWs in Singapore. METHODS: A mixed-methods study was conducted in two phases. Phase 1 involved a quantitative survey with 1,465 MWs and 1,462 MDWs from the six largest nationality gr

Why patients fail to seek information on OTC product interactions with a direct-acting oral anticoagulant: perspectives on information-seeking.

BACKGROUND: Many patients taking direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs) also consume over-the-counter (OTC) products (dietary supplements and OTC medications), yet many lack knowledge of potential interactions that may increase or decrease DOAC efficacy and may not seek information about OTC products. The objective of this study was to describe patient attitudes and beliefs that inhibited information seeking about potential apixaban-OTC product interactions. METHODS: Participants included English-, Spanish-, Mandarin-, and Cantonese-speaking adults from two large academic medical centers w

Use of social networking sites by parents of very low birth weight infants: experiences and the potential of a dedicated site.

UNLABELLED: The objective of this study was to study the experiences of parents of preterm infants who use social networking sites and the potential of such sites for gathering information and facilitating personal exchange. An anonymous self-reporting questionnaire was administered to parents of infants below 1,500 g birth weight born between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010 in two tertiary neonatal intensive care units. Of the 278 families who were sent a questionnaire, 141 responded; 53.6 % of respondents claimed to be presently members of online social networking sites. However, only

Sex differences in discrimination behavior and orbitofrontal engagement during context-gated reward prediction.

Animals, including humans, rely on contextual information to interpret ambiguous stimuli. Impaired context processing is a hallmark of several neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and addiction. While sex differences in the prevalence and manifestations of these disorders are well established, potential sex differences in context processing remain uncertain. Here, we examined sex differences in the contextual control over cue-evoked reward seeking and its neural correlates, in rats. Male and female rats were trained in

Knowledge of contraceptive methods and services among tertiary students in far North Queensland.

Despite the availability of a wide range of contraceptive options in Australia, rates of unintended pregnancy remain high. A survey of tertiary students in Far North Queensland in regard to their knowledge of contraceptive methods and services revealed significant deficiencies, suggesting that existing sex education and contraceptive advice services need improving if unplanned pregnancy rates are to be reduced in this population.

Psychosocial and behavioral correlates of anxiety symptoms in a sample of HIV-positive, methamphetamine-using men who have sex with men.

Studies show high rates of psychiatric symptoms among methamphetamine users; however, little information exists regarding methamphetamine use and anxiety. This study investigated psychosocial and behavioral correlates of anxiety symptoms in a sample of 245 HIV-positive men having sex with men (MSM) who were enrolled in a sexual risk-reduction intervention. In a multiple regression analysis, anxiety symptoms were associated with homelessness, recent experience of HIV symptoms, injection drug use, lifetime sexual abuse, engaging in risky sexual behaviors, and seeking out partners at risky sexual

Factors influencing sodium restriction behavior among patients with chronic heart failure: a cross-sectional study based on the value co-creation theory.

BACKGROUND: Digital health–supported value co-creation involves patients actively seeking information, communicating with healthcare professionals, and participating in shared decision-making throughout care. Sodium restriction is a cornerstone of chronic heart failure self-management, but adherence in real-world settings is often inadequate. Digital health technologies could strengthen patient–professional value co-creation; however, how value co-creation behaviours relate to sodium-restriction adherence remains unclear, particularly among Chinese patients with chronic heart failure. OBJECTIV

Closing the brain-heart loop: Towards more holistic models of addiction and addiction recovery.

Much research seeks to articulate the brain structures and pathways implicated in addiction and addiction recovery. Prominent neurobiological models emphasize the interplay between cortical and limbic brain regions as a main driver of addictive processes, but largely do not take into consideration sensory and visceral information streams that link context and state to the brain and behavior. Yet these brain-body information streams would seem to be necessary elements of a comprehensive model of addiction. As a starting point, we describe the overlap between one current model of addiction circu

Moderating Effects of Stigma-related Barriers on Ethnic Identity Dimensions and Mental Health Service Utilization among Black Adults in the US.

BACKGROUND: Significant disparities in mental health service utilization persist, particularly among Black adults in the United States. We focused on ethnic identity dimensions of centrality and assimilation and addressed their distinction from the commonly used term of acculturation. METHOD: This study utilized gamma regression to examine the relationship between ethnic identity and help-seeking behavior within a large sample of Black adults (N = 1,117) and investigated the moderating effects of stigma-related barriers on this relationship. RESULTS: The findings revealed statistically signi

The impact of stigma on health care-seeking behavior in military personnel with mental health challenges.

Prolonged armed conflict has raised significant concern about the mental health of military personnel and veterans. Conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder and depression affect approximately 14-16% of U.S. service members deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq. Other prevalent mental health issues include suicide, traumatic brain injury, substance use disorder, and aggression. Despite the availability of mental health services, stigma remains a major barrier to care, with nearly 60% of affected personnel avoiding treatment. This review examines how stigma influences help-seeking behavior

Coping with parental quarrels.

Children's reactions to parental quarrels were investigated in a general population sample of children between 9 and 12 years old. One hundred and thirty-nine families participated in the study. Approximately half the children were living in disharmonious families and half were in harmonious families. Mothers and children were interviewed with semistructured interviews to determine how children responded to specific episodes of parental quarrelling. Seventy-one percent of children reported intervening in parental quarrels. A range of other coping strategies was identified: seeking contact with

How women respond to uncertainty in the context of genetic screening: A qualitative analysis framed by the uncertainty tolerance model.

With advances in next-generation sequencing technologies, individuals can seek genetic risk information for multiple conditions. However, feasibility and communication challenges could arise if offering multiple genetic tests simultaneously, such as cancer predisposition testing and carrier screening for pregnancy planning. Genetic screening introduces uncertainty from probabilistic results, ambiguous gene-disease associations, and complex variant interpretation, intertwining with psychosocial concerns impacting decision-making and emotional well-being. This study utilized coding reliability t

Delay in Seeking Medical Attention and Diagnosis in Chinese Melanoma Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Melanoma is a highly malignant skin tumor, and prolonged delay in seeking medical attention (DSMA) and delay in diagnosis (DD) may result in poor prognoses. Through a web-based questionnaire, we explored the related factors affecting the DSMA and DD of melanoma in a Chinese population. A total of 112 valid answer sheets were received. After obtaining the relevant information, we analyzed the factors associated with DSMA and DD. The median time of DSMA was 8.0 (quartiles: 1.0, 29.3) months, and the median of patients' DD was 1.0 (quartiles: 1.0, 8.3) month. The subsequent analysis showed that D
