Aphakic eyes possess considerably less oblique astigmatism than phakic eyes. The possibility that posterior iris displacement after lens extraction accounts for the observed reduction in oblique astigmatism is tested in this study. Oblique astigmatism was calculated for a phakic and an aphakic schematic eye. With no iris displacement little reduction of oblique astigmatism occurred contrary to experimental findings. Between 1958 and 1985 (28 years), 100 melanocytic lesions of the iris were submitted to the Pathology Department of the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital (RVEEH). A 67-year-old woman presented with signs of severe intraocular inflammation and secondary glaucoma. Juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG) of the iris is extremely rare in adults. A case of presumed JXG occurred in a 26-year-old woman who was seen initially with bilateral iris lesions and spontaneous hyphema in one eye. Our discussion of adenocarcinomas arising from the ciliary and iris epithelium, based upon a case report and a review of the literature, attempts summarize what little is known about these tumors. A 30-year-old woman was found to have iris heterochromia as a consequence of unilateral congenital Horner's syndrome, Iris nevi were present and were equally darkly pigmented in either eye. BACKGROUND: A large iris defect or extensive iridodialysis can be an intractable cause of visual disturbance, photophobia, glare, monocular diplopia, or cosmetic deformity. The implantation of an artificial iris substitute could be an effective option, but this can cause a reduction in endothelial cell density. We succeeded in the anatomical restoration of iris tissue that was totally dialyzed out of the eye, and was preserved in cold balanced salt solution for 8 h.
