Effects of tooth storage media on periodontal ligament preservation.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: An easily available tooth storage medium is required to preserve a tooth after avulsion. Milk and Hank's balanced salt solution (HBSS) are recommended as tooth storage media, and egg white is also reported to be comparable with milk. The aim of this study was to histologically and immunohistochemically evaluate the effect of different tooth storage media on the periodontal ligament (PDL) of extracted teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This experiment used HBSS, milk, and egg white as tooth storage media. A total of ninety-six 6-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were used in these

A calcium-containing electrolyte-balanced hydroxyethyl starch (HES) solution is associated with higher factor VIII activity than is a non-balanced HES solution, but does not affect von Willebrand factor function or thromboelastometric measurements--results of a model of in vitro haemodilution.

BACKGROUND: Hydroxyethyl starch (HES) is known to impair blood coagulation. The impact of calcium-containing, balanced carrier solutions of HES on coagulation is controversial. We investigated the effects of increasing degrees of haemodilution with modern 6%, electrolyte-balanced HES vs non-balanced HES on coagulation in vitro, and compared the balanced HES to a balanced crystalloid solution for an internal control. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Blood samples from ten healthy volunteers were diluted in vitro by 20%, 40% and 60% with either calcium-containing balanced 130/0.42 HES, non-balanced 130/0

Impact of thyroid hormone administration on fluid requirements and hepatic injury markers in hemorrhagic shock due to liver trauma.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of triiodothyronine (T3) administration in a porcine model of hemorrhagic shock due to liver surgery, in terms of hemodynamic stability, acid-base status, and hepatic injury markers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Hemorrhagic shock was induced in swine by left lobe liver resection and allowed bleeding to a mean arterial pressure of 35-40 mmHg for 40 min. Animals were randomly assigned into a sham group (n = 5), a fluid-resuscitated group (n = 7), and a fluid plus T3-resuscitated group (n = 7). T3 was given by continuous intravenous

Vasopressor therapy using vasopressin prior to crystalloid resuscitation in irreversible hemorrhagic shock under isoflurane anesthesia in dogs.

In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that vasopressin administration prior to crystalloid resuscitation can be used to improve hemodynamic and oxygen delivery functions. Hemorrhagic shock was experimentally induced by maintaining mean arterial pressure at 60 mmHg for 30 min in sixteen healthy dogs weighing from 8 to 10.6 kg. Vasopressin was administered and then volume resuscitation was performed for the 6 dogs of V-C group, while vasopressin was administered at the end of volume resuscitation in the 5 dogs of C-V group. The control group (n=5) was administered 0.4 IU/kg of vasopress

Evaluation of intraoperative infusion solution using a complete anhepatic model in baby pigs.

Compared to cadaveric liver transplantation, living-related liver transplantation (LRLT) has the physiological advantage of avoiding hemodynamic changes due to the nonsystemic clamping of the inferior vena cava (IVC). However, metabolic changes in the level of blood glucose and lactate usually occur during the anhepatic phase in LRLT. For pediatric patients, intraoperative infusions have the potential to maintain immature homeostasis during LRLT. In the present study, a complete anhepatic model of baby pigs with nonsystemic clamping of IVC, which mimics the procedure of pediatric LRLT, was est

The effect of priming techniques of ultrafiltrators on blood rheology: an in vitro evaluation.

The increased interest of using ultrafiltration during cardiopulmonary bypass ICPB) has mandated a re-evaluation of the hematological effects of this blood conservation process. 'Rinse-free' ultrafiltrators can be primed using either crystalloid or blood prior to use. It is unknown whether one priming technique results in superior results in ultrafiltration quality. An in vitro circuit was designed to evaluate the Sorin/COBE HC1400 (n=6), the Lifestream HC70 (n=6), and the Terumo/Sarns HC11 (n=6). All test conditions were conducted at a blood flow rate of 250 ml/min and a transmembrane pressur

Bernard-Soulier syndrome in pregnancy: case report and review of the literature.

Bernard-Soulier Syndrome is a rare hereditary thrombocytopathy that manifests clinically by excessive bleeding out of proportion to the degree of thrombocytopenia. Only eight reports of Bernard-Soulier Syndrome in pregnancy have been previously described. In some patients the pregnancy course was smooth while in others post-partum haemorrhage was the most common complication. We present a primiparous female who had immediate and delayed post-partum haemorrhage that was managed conservatively. Review of the literature is also included.

[Effects of various Ringer's solutions on acid-base balance in rats in hemorrhagic shock and with hepatic dysfunction].

We investigated the effects of bicarbonated Ringer's solution (BR) on arterial blood acid-base balance, and compared these with the effects of lactated Ringer's solution (LR) and acetated Ringer's solution (AR) in rats in hemorrhagic shock. Rats underwent 70% reduction of hepatic blood flow and blood shedding of 1.5% of body weight. Each solution was infused through the femoral vein at a rate of shed blood volume x 8.hr-1 for 30 min under urethane anaesthesia. After the blood shedding, arterial blood pH and HCO3-decreased but plasma lactate concentration increased. These parameters improved si

Brain injury causes loss of cardiovascular response to hemorrhagic shock.

The combined cardiovascular effects of hemorrhagic shock and mechanical brain injury were modeled in five groups of pigs. Standard and hypertonic saline resuscitation of hypotension were evaluated. Changes in mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), central venous pressure (CVP), intracranial pressure (ICP), and brain water were measured. Brain injury (BI) was produced with a fluid percussion device that generated an extradural pressure of 3.5 x 10(5) N/m2 for 400 msec. Shock was caused by bleeding to a MAP of 60 mm Hg for 60 minutes and then resuscitated with shed blood only or shed blo

Ringer's acetate and dextran-70 with or without hypertonic saline in endotoxin-induced shock in pigs.

The effects of Ringer's acetate, 6% dextran-70, 7.5% NaCl, and the combination of 7.5% NaCl and dextran-70 were tested in resuscitation from endotoxin shock induced by continuous iv infusion of Escherichia coli endotoxin in pigs. After about 3 h, a reproducible shock state was achieved and treatment was started, governed by the left atrial pressure. The hypertonic solutions (7.5% NaCl and 7.5% NaCl in dextran-70) did not show any overall advantages over the isotonic solutions (Ringer's acetate and dextran-70). Only transient beneficial hemodynamic effects lasting less than 30 min after infusio…

Effects of iso-osmolal intravenous fluid therapy on post-ischemic brain water content in the rat.

This study evaluated the effects of different iso-osmolal solutions used for intravascular volume replacement on post-ischemic cerebral edema. Fasted Sprague-Dawley rats underwent 10 min of severe (near-complete) forebrain ischemia (bilateral carotid artery occlusion and hemorrhagic hypotension). At the completion of ischemia, 40% of the estimated total blood volume was replaced by iso-osmolal saline, 6% hetastarch, or blood. Plasma osmolality remained similar between groups throughout the experiment, while saline infusion resulted in a significant but transient decrease in colloid oncotic pre

Comparison on the pulmonary effects of rapid infusion of a crystalloid and a colloid solution.

The cardio-pulmonary effects of a rapid infusion of a crystalloid (Ringer's lactate) and a colloid solution (Dextran 40) were compared in healthy dogs. The colloid solution produced a long lasting volume expansion and hemodilution. The improved circulation in this group was reflected in an increased cardiac output and arterial blood pressure. The ventilation/perfusion ratios were reduced and the pulmonary vascular resistance was significantly lower in the colloid group in comparison both to the crystalloid group as well as to the control animals. The total oxygen consumption increased slightly

Drinking and feeding induced by jugular and portal infusions of 2-deoxy-D-glucose.

Intravenous infusions of three levels of 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2DG) were made through chronically implanted jugular and portal cannulas in rats. Food and water intakes were unaffected by 100 mg/kg 2DG, enhanced by 200 and 400 mg/kg 2DG, and unrelated to the route of administration. Drug-induced drinking occurred as readily when food was present as in its absence. Infusions of 2DG also produced stupor and ataxia whose severity was proportional, as was feeding and drinking, to the dose administered. Drinking induced by 2DG is inconsistent with the glucoprivic theory of feeding, and it was proposed

Intrarenal distribution of blood flow and cortico-medullary sodium gradient after unilateral splanchnicotomy in the dog.

1. Intrarenal distribution of blood flow and cortico-medullary sodium gradients have been studied in anaesthetized dogs, previously subjected to unilateral splanchnicotomy. Experiments were carried out on hydropoenic, normal, isotonic and hypotonic volume expanded animals.2. Polyuria and natriuresis were present under all experimental conditions after denervation.3. Denervation resulted in an increase in medullary blood flow, particularly in hydropoenic and normal dogs. In isotonic and hypotonic volume expansion, the increases in the medullary circulation were smaller despite a greater increas

Hypotensive resuscitation of multiple hemorrhages using crystalloid and colloids.

Hypotensive resuscitation has been advocated as a better means to perform field resuscitation of penetrating trauma. Our hypothesis is that hypotensive resuscitation using either crystalloid or colloid provides equivalent or improved metabolic function while reducing the overall fluid requirement for resuscitation of hemorrhage. We compared hypotensive and normotensive resuscitation of hemorrhage using lactated Ringer's (LR) with hypotensive resuscitation using Hextend (Hex), 6% hetastarch in isotonic buffered saline. Instrumented conscious sheep were hemorrhaged in three separate bleeds, 25 m

Central and regional hemodynamics during crystalloid fluid therapy after uncontrolled intra-abdominal bleeding.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of graded crystalloid fluid resuscitation on central hemodynamics and outcome after intra-abdominal hemorrhage. METHODS: Ten minutes after a 5-mm long laceration was produced in the infrarenal aorta, 32 pigs were randomized to receive either no fluid or Ringer's solution in the proportion 1:1, 2:1, or 3:1 to the expected amount of blood lost per hour (26 mL kg[-1]) over 2 hours. The hemodynamics were studied using arterial and pulmonary artery catheters and four blood flow probes placed over major blood vessels. RESULTS: During the first 40 minutes after the in
