Contraception Use among Women of Childbearing Age in Southern Israel: A Comparison Between Two Ethnic Populations.

PURPOSE: Two populations with different socio-demographic characteristics reside in southern Israel: the traditional Muslim Bedouin population and the Jewish population that leads a western lifestyle. The aim of the study was to assess the rate, pattern, and dynamics of the use of contraception in these two ethnic populations from 2006 to 2016 and to identify factors associated with the practice of effective and safe contraception. METHODS: A retrospective study based on a computerized medical database. We recorded actual purchases of different forms of contraception by women of childbearing

Situational Factors Related to Childhood Sexual Abuse in the Orthodox Jewish Community Among Adult and Juvenile Offenders.

In recent years, increasing attention has been paid to situational factors associated with childhood sexual abuse (CSA) to explain incidence of CSA, as well as to provide potential targets for prevention efforts. However, very few studies have examined situational factors associated with juvenile perpetration, despite juveniles composing a substantial proportion of offenders. In addition, no studies to our knowledge have applied a situational framework to CSA research in the Orthodox Jewish community (OJC). In the present study, we obtained data from therapists regarding 80 victims of CSA in t

From new screens to discovered genes: the successful past and promising present of single gene disorders.

Prenatal screening for single gene disorders, which include over 10,000 diverse diseases, presents a great challenge. The major approach to identifying high-risk groups for diseases, from Tay Sachs Disease to sickle cell disease, has historically centered on ethnic-based screening. A major concern in an ethnic-based approach is that carriers belonging to less-traditionally considered populations will be missed. In the United States, the paradigm for a more modern pan-ethnic approach has become exemplified by cystic fibrosis (CF), although considerable debate about future directions remains. CF

[Performance of screening tests in the preventive services for infants].

UNLABELLED: Early detection is one of the aims of the surveillance by the preventive services in infancy. OBJECTIVES: This article presents the performance of screening for anemia in infancy, compliance with iron supplementation and treatment, screening for hearing, and abnormalities of the hip joint, and referral to ear, nose and throat (E.N.T.) and orthopedic specialists according to the screening results. METHODS: The sample consisted of Jewish and Arab women who gave birth during March 2000. Mothers were interviewed after the infants reached the age of 15-19 months (667 Jewish and 211 Ar

Benign familial microcytic thrombocytosis with autosomal dominant transmission.

Familial thrombocytosis is an extremely rare disorder, so far reported in only a handful of families. In the majority of cases the characteristics were of essential thrombocythemia. Most patients presented with a platelet count above 800,000/mm3, were diagnosed as having a myeloproliferative disease, and some required chemotherapy. We describe a benign form of familial thrombocytosis with autosomal dominant inheritance in five healthy members of three generations of a family, all of whom had moderate thrombocytosis within the range 422,000-662,000/mm3, characterized by low mean platelet volume

Autosomal recessive colobomatous microphthalmia.

Colobomatous microphthalmia was studied in multiple relatives of 5 families. In these families, the disorder was an autosomal recessive trait as opposed to the usual autosomal dominant form of the disorder. A relatively high incidence of this recessive allele is found in the Iranian Jewish community.

The history of louse-borne typhus and geomedizine.

The experience of World War I made popular the concept of medical geography (geomedicine in English, geomedizine in German), which became part of Nazism's philosophy of national welfare, safety, and solidarity. The Nazis used it to create propaganda to show some groups as rats, vermin, and Untermenschen (subhumans). In this way, more than 10 million people were killed under the Nazi regime: 6 million Jews, plus more than 5 million Gypsies, Jehovah's Witnesses, and other individuals who were not part of the German theory of "master race." The Germans' fear of typhus that spread in the Wehrmacht…

A rare cause of massive ascites: familial Mediterranean fever.

Familial Mediterranean fever is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by recurrent fever and peritoneal and pleural inflammation. It is an inherited disorder commonly found in Armenians, Turks, Arabs, Balkans, and Jews originating from North African countries. A small amount of peritoneal fluid collection can be observed during peritoneal attacks in patients with Familial Mediterranean fever, but chronic ascites has been described rarely in these patients. A 42-year-old female patient was admitted to our clinic in June 2010 with fever, severe abdominal pain and abdominal distention that…

Among Ashkenazi Jews, major mutation G197del was detected in 30% (7 out of 22) of patients with FH. In the Slavic population of St. Petersburg, no major mutations were detected. Phenotype/genotype correlations in Gaucher disease type I: clinical and therapeutic implications.

Gaucher disease is the most frequent lysosomal storage disease and the most prevalent genetic disease among Ashkenazi Jews. Gaucher disease type 1 is characterized by marked variability of the phenotype and by the absence of neuronopathic involvement. To test the hypothesis that this phenotypic variability was due to genetic compounds of several different mutant alleles, 161 symptomatic patients with Gaucher disease type 1 (> 90% Ashkenazi Jewish) were analyzed for clinical involvement, and their genotypes were determined. Qualitative and quantitative measures of disease involvement included a…

Hunger Disease in Southern France Internment Camps during World War II: The Pioneering Studies of Dr. Joseph Weill.

Dr. Joseph Weill was a French Jewish doctor who made significant contributions to the knowledge of hunger disease in the refugee camps in southern France during World War II. He was involved with the clandestine network of escape routes for Jewish children from Nazi-occupied France to Switzerland. Take home messages • During the Holocaust, in the ghettoes and death camps, a few research projects, mainly on hunger and infectious diseases, were performed by Jewish physicians and scientists • Jewish and non-Jewish prisoners were incarcerated within the notorious system of internment camps in sout

Expanding the phenotypic spectrum of COLEC10-Related 3MC syndrome: A glimpse into COLEC10-Related 3MC syndrome in the Ashkenazi Jewish population.

Bi-allelic variants in COLEC11 and MASP1 have been associated with 3MC syndrome, a clinical entity made of up four rare autosomal recessive disorders: Carnevale, Mingarelli, Malpuech, and Michels syndromes, characterized by variable expression of facial dysmorphia, cleft lip/palate, postnatal growth deficiency, hearing loss, cognitive impairment, craniosynostosis, radioulnar synostosis, and genital and vesicorenal anomalies. More recently, bi-allelic variants in COLEC10 have been described to be associated with 3MC syndrome. Syndromic features seen in 3MC syndrome are thought to be due to disr
