To gain greater insight into the nature of the bleeding tendency in hemophilia, we compared the spatial dynamics of clotting in platelet-free plasma from healthy donors and from patients with severe hemophilia A or B (factor VIII:C or IX:C<1%). To document the diagnostic features of foreign-body pneumonias, four commonly used orally administered medicaments were instilled into the lungs of Sprague-Dawley rats. The reflectance model developed by Kubelka and Munk was evaluated for agreement in color prediction of thick pigmented samples and for linearity of optical absorption and scattering coefficients with concentration of colorant in maxillofacial elastomer. Correlations between in vitro hemolytic activity and the in vivo fibrogenic activity of a number of particulate materials are demonstrated. Fibrogenic particles are capable of inducing hemolysis, while non-fibrogenic particles are not. It is suggested that particulates inducing a rate of hemolysis greater than 1 X 10(-4) min-1 may be fibrogenic.
