BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata (AA) is characterized by limited non-scarring patchy alopecia, which appears as round or oval patches and is prone to recurrence, causing severe psychological burdens to patients. No specific device has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of baldness, but new treatments are being investigated and treatments such as the excimer laser, He- Ne laser, and excimer lamp have been proposed. A growing number of studies have found that fractional lasers also have great potential in the treatment of AA.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses are widely available. Residual ametropia is one of the most common issues that can result in patient dissatisfaction. Options for correcting refractive surprises include piggyback intraocular lens implantation, corneal incisional surgery and laser correction. PURPOSE: To analyze the safety of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) with the Nidek EC-5000 excimer laser for surgery performed from Jan 1999 to Dec 2001.
METHODS: Retrospective study of excimer laser in 683 eyes: PRK was performed in 103 eyes and LASIK was performed in 580 eyes using the Nidek EC-5000 excimer laser and Moria Carriazo Barraquer microkeratome. PURPOSE: To evaluate the results of hyperopic LASIK in children and adolescents with accommodative strabismus and refractive amblyopia.
METHODS: The procedures were conducted by standard methods of LASIK using a Technolas 217C excimer laser (Bausch & Lomb, Rochester, NY).

BACKGROUND: A new technique, therapeutic alloplastic laser in situ keratomileusis to correct high myopia, is introduced.
METHODS: Therapeutic alloplastic laser in situ keratomileusis consists of neutral homoplastic epikeratoplasty combined with superficial keratectomy performed with an excimer laser and/or a microkeratome. Indications for the technique are: myopia over 20 diopters (D), eyes with corneal scarring after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), complications following keratomileusis, radial keratotomy complications with undercorrection, and keratoconus suspect myopic eyes.
