OBJECTIVE: to study the hirudotherapy efficacy in presbyacuzis praecox in clean-up workers (CUWs) of the Chornobyl disaster (ChD) during the post-accident years.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From archive data of previously examined 8,136 males' CUWs we selected among them 129 persons with the determined presbyacuzis praecox during the post-accident years. According to the physical dosime- try data the individual radiation of received by CUWs during the work on a rotational scheme in the Chornobyl exclu- sion zone from the end of 1986 to 1992-1994 amounted to 0.21-0.50 Gy. The examinations were carr

Transmission and infection strategies are critical for completing the life cycles of trematode parasites, which are characterized by complex life cycles involving multiple hosts and stages. Transmission between the first and second intermediate hosts typically relies on cercariae, a free-swimming larval stage that displays a series of behaviors to efficiently disperse, locate, attach to, and infect the next host. The aim of this study is to provide detailed information on behaviors used by furcocercariae (bifurcated tail) during its transmission from the snail to the fish host, using the labor

1. The hydraulic resistance of synovial interstitium helps to retain a lubricating fluid within the joint cavity. The contributions of sulphated glycosaminoglycans to resistance were assessed by selective depletion by chondroitinase ABC, keratanase and heparinases I, II and III in vivo. Also, since glycosaminoglycans do not account fully for the resistance, the contribution of non-collagenous, structural proteins in interstitium was assessed by treatment with chymopapain, a collagen-sparing protease. 2. Ringer solution containing enzyme was injected into the synovial cavity of the knee in anae

BACKGROUND: Studies of the anticoagulant effects of hirudin, which is derived from the saliva of the leech Hirudo medicinalis, led to the development of compounds that can directly inhibit thrombin activity without the need for additional cofactors. One of these is the direct thrombin inhibitor bivalirudin, which has recently been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for use as an anticoagulant in patients with unstable angina undergoing percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty.
OBJECTIVE: This is a review of the pharmacologic properties, efficacy, tolerability, and potential

BACKGROUND: In the severely burned patient, coverage of exposed bone in the dorsal ulnar wrist can be a difficult problem. This is especially challenging in patients with a high percentage total body surface area (TBSA) where donor flaps can be scarce. The use of previously burned and/or recently grafted skin as flaps is an option. It has been postulated that use of previously burned skin can result in higher rates of local or distant flap failures. The reverse posterior interosseous flap (PIF) is an axial flap, based on the retrograde posterior interosseous artery, to provide coverage of the

Pubic osteomyelitis is a rare and often late-onset complication of radiation therapy and surgery for vulvar and vaginal carcinoma. It typically presents with vulvar pain, fever, vaginal discharge and/or gait disorders. Pubic osteomyelitis is often accompanied by fistulas or wound dehiscence in the pelvic area. Its accurate diagnosis and treatment are challenging and require a multidisciplinary team effort. In our patients, multiple combined surgical procedures, long-term antibiotic treatment and days to weeks of hospital admission were necessary to treat pubic osteomyelitis. We emphasise the i

OBJECTIVE: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by a high risk of recurrence and fistula formation. Spontaneous remission has been reported in up to 50% of cases, particularly in mild forms, within 6-24 months without intervention, but inadequate management may allow disease progression. The aim of this study was to compare the clinical outcomes of patients who initially preferred hirudotherapy (leech therapy) with those managed with evidence-based stepwise conventional care.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed histopathologica

Salmonid cryptobiosis is caused by Cryptobia (Trypanoplasma) salmositica. The haemoflagellate has been reported from all species of Pacific Oncorhynchus spp. on the west coast of North America. It is normally transmitted by the freshwater leech, Piscicola salmositica, in streams and rivers, and sculpins, Cottus spp., are considered important reservoir hosts. The pathogen can also survive on the body surface of fish because it has a contractile vacuole to osmoregulate when the fish is in fresh water. This allows for direct transmission between fish, especially in aquaculture facilities. The par

Post-translational modification of proteins plays critical roles in regulating structure, stability, localization, and function. Sulfation of the phenolic side chain of tyrosine residues to form sulfotyrosine (sTyr) is a widespread modification of extracellular and integral membrane proteins, influencing the activities of these proteins in cellular adhesion, blood clotting, inflammatory responses, and pathogen infection. Tyrosine sulfation commonly occurs in sequences containing clusters of tyrosine residues and is incomplete at each site, resulting in heterogeneous mixtures of sulfoforms. Pur

A common misconception among microsurgeons is that free tissue failure is an "all-or-none" phenomenon. In other words, there is an instantaneous cessation of blood flow to a flap primarily due to thrombosis at the arterial or venous anastomotic site (primary thrombosis) with complete flap loss as a result. Contrary to this belief, we have found that free tissue transfers occasionally "die" a slow, progressive, and partial death. This most likely is due to gradual "shutting down" of the microcirculation by the showering of microemboli downstream from the arterial anastomosis (secondary thrombos

As a consequence of vessel wall injury, subendothelial matrix and collagen fibers are exposed to the flowing blood. Circulating platelets adhere to these structures and initiate arrest of blood flow. Subendothelial von Willebrand Factor (vWF) plays an important role in mediating platelet adhesion to the injured site, at least in the arterial circulation, characterized by sufficiently elevated shear forces to allow a critical conformation change in vWF, enabling an interaction between the vWF domain A1 and the vWF receptor on the platelet, the GPIb/IX complex. In vitro, in the absence of shear

BACKGROUND: Mixed vascular nevus (or nevus vascularis mixtus) represents an admixture of cutaneous vascular malformations of the telangiectatic type and angiospastic spots of nevus anemicus. It can occur as an purely cutaneous trait or as a hallmark of a neurocutaneous phenotype (mixed vascular nevus syndrome) characterised by the combination of: (I) paired vascular (telangiectatic and anemic) twin nevi and brain abnormalities of the Dyke-Davidoff-Masson type (i.e., crossed cerebral/cerebellar hemiatrophy with hypoplasia of the ipsilateral cerebral vessels and homolateral hypertrophy of the sk

Hyaluronidase has been investigated in various strains of pneumococci and hemolytic streptococci, and in some material of animal origin. The enzyme activity was measured by a viscosimetric method using as a substrate a fluid containing hyaluronic acid as the viscous component, and by the hydrolysis of pure hyaluronic acid into its reducing components. In pneumococci the enzyme was demonstrated in all types and in all strains tested, including smooth and rough forms of Types I, II, III, and VI. In hemolytic streptococci the enzyme from strain H44, group A, reported previously, was further inves

Junctional adhesion molecule-A (JAM-A) is an adhesion molecule that exists on the surface of certain types of cells, including white blood cells, endothelial cells, and dendritic cells. In this study, the cDNA sequences of JAM-A-Fc were chemically synthesized with optimization for mammalian expression. Afterward, we analyzed JAM-A protein expression through transient transfection in HEK293 cell lines. Mice were immunized with JAM-A-Fc protein, and hybridoma was prepared by fusing myeloma cells and mouse spleen cells. Antibodies were purified from the hybridoma supernatant and four monoclonal s

Over the last three decades, the literature pointed out the implications of Aeromonas species in human pathology. These species were described as being involved in intestinal (several outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis of choleric/dysenteric form or chronic diarrhoea, ulcerative colitis, etc.) in normal adults or children, as well as in extraintestinal infections in immunocompromised hosts. This last aspect included a large range of cutaneous injuries (micronecrosis, abscesses, bums, cellulites, furunculosis), joint, bones, respiratory, urinary tract, ocular infections up to meningitis, endoca
