Distribution - on or off prescription (of oral contraceptives)?

Restrictions on sale of oral contraceptives (OCs) in Australia are based on their classification as Schedule 4 poisons; as such they are "restricted substances" and obtainable only on a prescription. In general only a medical practitioner can prescribe OCs and only a chemist or a licensed person can dispense them. Doctors at Family Planning Clinics and Hospital Outpatient Departments may also supply OCs. There are arguments for and against a relaxation of restrictions controlling the distribution of OCs, many of these views were stated in submissions to the Royal Commission on Human Relationsh

Dynamic and static factors associated with discharge dispositions: the national trajectory project of individuals found not criminally responsible on account of mental disorder (NCRMD) in Canada.

The majority of individuals found not criminally responsible on account of mental disorder (NCRMD) in Canada spend some time in hospital before they are conditionally or absolutely (no conditions) discharged to the community by a legally mandated review board. By law, the decision to conditionally discharge an individual found NCRMD should be guided by the need to protect the public, the mental condition of the accused, and the other needs of the accused, especially regarding his/her community reintegration. At the time of this study, Canadian legislation and case law required that the review

Identifying paediatric non-accidental injuries: South African diagnostic radiographers' perceptions.

INTRODUCTION: Paediatric non-accidental injuries (NAIs) are injuries resulting from physical child abuse. These injuries are frequently not disclosed by caregivers when the paediatric patients present to emergency departments, a challenge exacerbated by the patient's dependence on adults and limited ability to communicate abuse. Consequently, healthcare professionals (HCPs), including diagnostic radiographers, play a critical role in recognising inconsistencies in patient history, clinical presentation and radiological findings that may indicate NAI. However, existing literature highlights kno

Vocational rehabilitation and return to work after spinal cord injury: a scoping review of policies in the U.S. and Canada.

PURPOSE: Spinal cord injury (SCI) significantly impacts quality of life and economic independence, yet employment rates remain disproportionately low, suggesting a divergence between the legislative intent of inclusion and the clinical goal of functioning. The alignment of social policy with rehabilitation practice is essential. This study conducted a comparative scoping review of federal policies and policy-driven vocational rehabilitation (VR) strategies in the U.S. and Canada to map the evidence landscape and identify critical gaps in cross-national research. METHODS: The PRISMA guidelines

"Instead of just taking my baby, they could've actually given me a chance": Experiences with plans of safe care among birth parents impacted by perinatal substance use.

BACKGROUND: Federal legislation mandates healthcare providers to notify child protective service (CPS) agencies and offer a voluntary care plan called a "plan of safe care" (POSC) for all infants born affected by prenatal substance use. While POSCs aim to provide supportive services for families impacted by substance use, little is known about birth parents' perceptions and experiences. OBJECTIVE: To examine birth parents' perceptions and experiences regarding POSC. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Parents offered a POSC in Philadelphia in the prior year were included. Comparison of Antiemetics in the Management of Pediatric Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: As a result of recent legislative changes allowing for increased access to marijuana products, there have been increasing rates of cannabis abuse among adolescents and subsequent diagnoses of cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS). Most available literature on this syndrome exists within the adult population and describes benzodiazepines, haloperidol, and topical capsaicin as potentially efficacious in the management of CHS. The objectives of this study were to identify antiemetics and compare their efficacy and safety in the management of pediatric CHS. METHODS: A retrospective re

New parity, same old attitude towards psychotherapy?

Full parity of health insurance benefits for treatment of mental illness, including substance use disorders, is a major achievement. However, the newly-published regulations implementing the legislation strongly endorse aggressive managed care as a way of containing costs for the new equality of coverage. Reductions in "very long episodes of out-patient care," hospitalization, and provider fees, along with increased utilization, are singled out as achievements of managed care. Medical appropriateness as defined by expert medical panels is to be the basis of authorizing care, though clinicians

Diseases in the Byzantine world with special emphasis on the nephropathies.

Using medical manuscripts and texts from the Byzantine period (330-1453), this article describes various, to date little discussed, aspects of Byzantine nosology, public health and therapeutics. Many diseases in the Byzantine era were widespread and had a high morbidity such as respiratory disease, various kinds of anaemia, pestilential diseases (e.g. quartan fever, plague, dysentery and cholera), parasitic diseases, orthopaedic, rheumatic and psychiatric disorders, trachoma and alcoholism. Other very serious and relatively frequent conditions included leprosy, mania, gout, cancerous tumours a

Medical ethics in the 1990s. Emphasis on death-and-dying issues will continue but social concerns will command increased attention.

During the 1990s medical ethics will undergo changes. Individual clinical issues, especially those related to death and dying, will continue to create conflict and preoccupy hospital staffs. But professional ethicists will focus on social concerns more frequently than they have in the past. Following are some of the most crucial ethical issues and directions they are likely to take in this decade: Clinical practice and the law will move toward less demanding standards of proof regarding the withdrawal of treatment from patients who are no longer competent. Public policy will set more lenient s

Access to Surgery and Health Care for Justice-Involved Individuals.

Justice-involved individuals, encompassing those with prior interactions with the correctional system, represent a population with significant unmet healthcare needs. Approximately 95% of incarcerated individuals return to society, often with unresolved chronic conditions or infectious diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis C, and face considerable barriers to accessing healthcare. Institutional constraints, logistical complications, inadequate resources, and cultural biases exacerbate disparities, contributing to suboptimal health outcomes and public health risks. Healthcare access for justice-in

Background and safety of surgical abortion between 14 and 16 weeks gestation: A retrospective multicentre observational study.

BACKGROUND: Surgical abortion between 12 and 14 weeks of gestation (WG) is a widely accepted, standardized practice in France. In 2022, legislation extended the legal limit to 16 WG, yet implementation remains uneven. Some centers remain reluctant to perform procedures beyond 14 weeks due to perceived safety concerns. OBJECTIVES: To assess the risk of complications associated with surgical abortion between 14 and 16 WG. We also sought to describe the characteristics of women receiving at this period abortions and document the local implementation of this technique. METHODS: We conducted a re
