The first case of a pinealis region tumor of the hematopoietic system without known leukemia (so-called primary myeloblastoma, primary granulocytic sarcoma) is reported. Two weeks after resection, the 3.5-year-old patient suffered from a local recurrence. At this time, a bone marrow infiltration by leukemic blasts was diagnosed for the first time. An aggressive chemotherapy and radiation induced a complete remission, over a 26-month follow-up period. We examined the removed tumor tissue by routine histology methods, immuno- and enzyme histochemistry and electron microscopy. The CSF was studied

A 30-year-old male with chronic myelogenous leukemia was treated by intrathecal instillation of methotrexate and cytosine arabinoside because of meningeal infiltration of leukemic cells. He developed neurlogical signs of bilateral cerebral dysfunction with progressive deterioration and died. The neuropathological changes consisted of multiple small areas of demyelination and coagulative necrosis that were randomly disseminated in the cerebral white matter. There was a remarkable decrease of glial nuclei and occasional deposits of mineral salts. Numerous axonal swellings were observed within an

A rare case of acute lymphoblastic leukemia presenting with vasopressin-responsive diabetes insipidus (DI) is reported. The patient presente … DI to chlorpropamide is discussed briefly. In this patient it is presumed that the DI was caused by leukemic infiltration of the supraopticohypophyseal tract, posterior pituitary, or hypothalamus.

Central nervous system (CNS) lesions were found in 85 of 91 children with acute leukemia. Cerebral atrophy was the most common lesion, occurring in 65 percent. Atrophy was most severe in children treated with intrathecal methotrexate alone or in combination with radiation therapy, in children youngest at time of onset of leukemia, and in children in whom duration of leukemia was shortest. Longer duration was the determining factor among children who were older at onset. Lesions previously reported by other investigators, such as leptomeningeal infiltration of leukemic cells, infection, hemorrh

The mechanism of leukemogenesis or neoplastic cell growth in adult T cell leukemia (ATL) still remains unclear, although Tax of human T cell leukemia/lymphoma virus type I (HTLV-I), the etiologic virus, has been reported to affect the expression of various cellular genes which encode molecules involved in cell growth or cell death. We have studied the cell growth of HTLV-I-infected human T cells in severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mice and found that fresh leukemic cells or cell lines derived from leukemic cell clones but not HTLV-I-infected cell lines of nonleukemic cell origin showed

Central nervous system (CNS) histoplasmosis is a rare but serious manifestation of Histoplasma capsulatum infection that often mimics other intracranial pathologies. We report the case of a 22-year-old man with untreated cancer who presented with progressive neurological deficits. Neuroimaging revealed multifocal ring-enhancing lesions, raising the possibility of a broad differential diagnosis including leukemic infiltration and other CNS infections. Extensive evaluation including cultures and molecular assays were negative. Diagnosis was confirmed by a positive urine Histoplasma antigen and i…

A 53-year-old male was admitted because of pancytopenia and chronic subdural hematoma. Bone marrow was hypercellular with 97% blasts, which expressed CD10, CD19, CD20, and immunoglobulin mu and gamma chains on the cell surface and had chromosomal abnormalities including t(8 ; 22)(q24 ; q11). The patient was diagnosed as having Burkitt leukemia. Because hemiplegia and disturbance of consciousness developed rapidly, the patient was treated with an emergency drainage operation followed by Hyper-CVAD therapy and achieved a sustained complete remission. Dural infiltration of leukemic cells as well

CONTEXT: Specific differentiation of leukemia cutis (LC) from nonleukemic dermatoses is crucial to ensure proper treatment for the disease. Because of the exceptionally variable histologic features of LC and the frequent nonleukemic dermatoses in leukemia patients, identification of leukemic cells that infiltrate skin lesions is important. Here, we introduce JL1, a novel leukemia-associated surface antigen, which is not expressed in mature human tissue but in cortical thymocytes and small subpopulations of bone marrow hematopoietic precursors.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the expression pattern of J

BACKGROUND: During embryonal development primitive hematopoiesis can be observed first in the yolk sac, in which both hematopoietic and endothelial cells are derived from a common precursor, the hemangioblast. Whether cells with this dual differentiation potential persist during postnatal life is unknown.
METHODS: A cell line was derived from a patient with secondary acute leukemia. Because of its ability to grow in soft agar and in SCID mice, this cell line was analyzed for expression of differentiation antigens by fluorescence-activated cell sorter analysis, immunocytochemistry, fluorescent

The human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is the causative agent of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL), a disorder in which peripheral blood and multiple organs are infiltrated by malignantly transformed T lymphocytes. We investigated the nature of pulmonary disease in a patient with serologic evidence of HTLV-1 infection. In this case, endobronchial biopsy specimens showed infiltration of the bronchial mucosa by pleomorphic cells exhibiting a high degree of nuclear irregularity. These cells were morphologically identical in appearance to malignant cells found in peripheral blood

In a series of 139 spleens involved by non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, we found that each type of lymphoma (as classified according to the Kiel classification) has a specific pattern of infiltration in the red and white pulp. Tumor infiltration in preexistent follicles was not a feature of B-cell lymphomas, but tumor nodules were found in the red pulp nonfiltering areas in cases of immunocytoma (small lymphocytic plasmacytoid) and centroblastic-centrocytic lymphoma (follicle center-cell lymphoma). B-chronic lymphocytic leukemia and centrocytic-centroblastic lymphoma were located along central arteries

A 16-month-old female spayed Labrador Retriever was referred to the University of Edinburgh for exercise intolerance, inappetence, and severe anemia. A CBC showed severe nonregenerative anemia and moderate numbers of atypical cells with morphologic features most consistent with megakaryoblastic origin. Similar cells were identified in a bone marrow aspirate and accounted for 23% of all nucleated cells. Atypical promegakaryocytes and megakaryocytes were also noted. Myelodysplastic syndrome affecting the megakaryocytic lineage was suspected. Cytologic examination of a fine-needle aspirate of the

A 70-year-old Japanese male presented with a 1-year history of skin tumors, which were diagnosed as primary cutaneous anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) because of the CD3(low+), CD4(+), CD25(+), CD30(+), CD45RO(+), CD71(+), HLA-DR(+), CD8(-), CD56(-), and NPM/ALK(-) phenotype and monoclonal T-cell receptor-rearranged property of tumor cells as well as the absence of systemic involvement. At this time, the tumor cell was positive for cutaneous lymphocyte-associated antigen (CLA) and TH(2) chemokine receptor CCR4. The eruption had repeatedly appeared and spontaneously regressed or regressed

Ten leukemia and four aplastic anemia cases were clinicopathologically studied in autopsies from patients who had been administered the contrast medium, Thorotrast, three to five decades previously. The short period from the appearance of hematological symptoms to death, the relatively low percentage of leukemic cells in the peripheral blood, the high frequency of erythroleukemia, i.e., 50% of leukemia patients, and a case of atypical megakaryocyte proliferation were revealed in leukemia patients. Leukemic cell infiltration in the spleen tended to become slight or minimal with the progress of

Pulmonary complications are frequently encountered in patients with hematological malignancy. The optimal therapeutic decision including open lung biopsy (OLB) for such patients is uncertain. We herein examine the clinical impact of OLB on these patients. Seven patients with progressively diffuse pulmonary infiltrates despite aggressive medical treatment were examined. The underlying diseases, prior treatment for presumptive pneumonia, the change in therapeutic approach after operation, and clinical outcome were reviewed retrospectively. Diffuse pulmonary infiltrates were caused by infection i

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a myeloproliferative disorder associated with the Philadelphia chromosome t (9;22) and the BCR-ABL fusion gene. The condition is relatively rare, accounting for 2.0% to 3.0% of childhood leukemia cases. CML has historically been a triphasic disease. Most patients are diagnosed in chronic phase. Without treatment, it inevitably progresses into a more aggressive accelerated phase and blast crisis. Some proportion of CML cases of blastic transformation develop an extramedullary disease that involves rarely central nervous system. This report describe an extremely

B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (B-CLL) is characterized by clonal growth and accumulation of mature lymphoid cells due to disturbance in genetically regulated form of cell death called apoptosis. The intrinsic mechanism of apoptosis is controlled by Bcl-2 family proteins. Purine nucleoside analogues induce the apoptosis in cells in a state of quiescence. The aim of the study was to assess expression of selected Bcl-2 family proteins in neoplastic infiltration in bone marrow in patients with B-CLL treated with nucleoside analogues. The study comprised examination of bone marrow obtained r
