Lichen sclerosus in women: a review.

Female lichen sclerosus is a chronic inflammatory dermatitis, with a predilection for the anogenital area, which in some cases can become seriously distorted (atrophy of the labia minora, phimosis, introital stenosis, etc.). Most cases are diagnosed in postmenopausal women, but it can affect women of any age. Lichen sclerosus is usually a pruriginous condition, although it can also be asymptomatic. It is associated with an increased risk of vulvar cancer, even though it is not a premalignant condition itself. The true precursor of cancer associated with lichen sclerosus is vulvar intraepitheli

Vulvar lichen planus pemphigoides.

Lichen planus pemphigoides (LPP) is a rare blistering disease with features of both lichen planus and bullous pemphigoid. LPP typically appears on the extremities and occasionally involves the oral mucosa. Herein, we describe a case of LPP of the vulva of an 80-year-old woman, an uncommon location for this disease process. This clinical scenario can be confused with a number of similarly appearing entities such as erosive vulvar lichen planus, mucous membrane pemphigoid, and erosive lichen sclerosus et atrophicus. In fact, our patient carried a diagnosis of lichen sclerosus by an outside physi

Bullous lichen planus - a review.

Bullous lichen planus is a rare variant of lichen planus. It is characterized by vesicles or bullae, which usually develop in the context of pre-existing LP lesions. It is often misdiagnosed and should be differentiated from other subepidermal bullous diseases especially lichen planus pemphigoides. The diagnosis is based on clinical suspicion and is confirmed by histopathology and immunofluoresence. The clinical features of bullous lichen planus include typical lichen planus lesions, accompanied by the formation of bullae on the affected or perilesional skin. This is evident on histology, with

Case for diagnosis. Lichen myxedematosus.

Scleromyxedema or lichen myxedematosus is a rare papular mucinosis of chronic and progressive course and unknown etiology. It is commonly associated with monoclonal gammopathy and may show extracutaneous manifestations, affecting the heart, lung, kidney, and nerves. The diagnosis is based on four criteria: generalized papular and sclerodermoid lesions; mucin deposition, fibroblast proliferation, and fibrosis in the histopathology; monoclonal gammopathy; and no thyroid disorders. This article reports the case of a scleromyxedema patient with a recent history of acute myocardial infarction and m

Ethiopatogenic Hypotheses in Lichen Planus.

Lichen planus is a mucocutaneous inflammatory dermatosis characterized by a papular rash; the disease is self-limited, has several clinical subtypes and follows a chronic or subacute clinical course. This article presents some etiological hypotheses: stress, genetic predisposition, systemic diseases, viral infections, materials used in dentistry. Also, medicines or contact allergens can cause lichenoid reactions, which are the main differential diagnosis. Autoimmune hypothesis can be supported by the association with other autoimmune diseases, such as ulcerative colitis, alopecia areata, vitil

THE AUTOIMMUNE CONSTELLATION IN LICHEN AMYLOIDOSIS.

Localized cutaneous amyloidosis is a rare disease among white people, being more common in South-Asia, China and South America. The disease is characterized by deposition of amyloid material in the papillary dermis without visceral involvement. Nevertheless, there is a growing list of immune-mediated disorders that have been linked to cutaneous amyloidosis. We present two cases of concomitant occurrence of lichen amyloidosis and autoimmune thyroiditis/atopic dermatitis in two Caucasian women.

Lichen striatus with onychodystrophy in an infant.

Lichen striatus with nail involvement is rare and is often unnoticed. Nail changes are often nonspecific but they are usually localized to one portion of the nail. Also single nail involvement and presence of skin lesions near the nail are often noticed. We report the case of an infant with lichen striatus and nail involvement.

Extragenital bullous lichen sclerosus.

Lichen sclerosus is an inflammatory skin condition characterized by inflammation of the papillary dermis that leads to white scarlike plaques. It occurs classically in the genitals but also has extragenital manifestations with a variety of clinical presentations including a bullous variant. The purpose of this review is to characterize extragenital bullous lichen sclerosus, suggest that it may be more common than dermatologists realize, and discuss treatment of both routine and recalcitrant cases.

Clinical variants of lichen planus.

Lichen planus is characterized by lichenoid, polygonal papules with fine white lines, called Wickham striae. Lesions most commonly occur on the limbs and on the dorsal aspect of the trunk. At the same time often leukoplakia of mucous membranes as well as nail disorders are seen. There are numerous variants of lichen planus which can be distinguished from the classical form on the basis of morphology and distribution of the lesions. The typical primary lesion of lichen planus may be replaced by other forms, such as patches, hyperkeratoses, ulcerations, or bullous lesions. Moreover, distribution

Lichen sclerosus in children and adolescents.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review of lichen sclerosus in children and adolescents will discuss the disease and highlight the most recent literature. RECENT FINDINGS: Lichen sclerosus continues to be poorly recognized and misdiagnosed by clinicians. There is growing support for an autoimmune component in the cause of this disease. Recent studies confirm that lichen sclerosus does not resolve after puberty but usually improves. In small case series, topical calcineurin inhibitors are effective as second-line therapy. SUMMARY: Lichen sclerosus is an uncommon, poorly recognized disease in girls and

Lichen nitidus with involvement of the palms.

A 14-year-old girl presented with hyperkeratotic, pitted, skin-colored papules on a slightly erythematous surface on her palms and erythematous and squamous papules around her ankles. She was clinically and histopathologically diagnosed with lichen nitidus, which is observed rarely on the palms.
