OBJECTIVES: To review the competence of Omega-3 fatty acids in restricting the progression, thereby leading to prevention of diabetic retinopathy.
KEY FINDINGS: Owing to their anti-inflammatory and anti-angiogenic properties, Omega-3 fatty acids alleviate major aetiological agents. These fatty acids are renowned for their beneficial effects in various cardiovascular and other disorders; however, their potential to prevent the progression of diabetic retinopathy remains least explored.
SUMMARY: Utilizing this potential, we may develop effective prophylactic agents which markedly inhibit the a

Essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency is a useful tool to study the role of arachidonate and its metabolites in various physiologic and pathologic states. Recent studies have clarified the effects of EFA deficiency on membrane arachidonate and its metabolites, and have demonstrated that 20:3(n-9) (which accumulates in EFA deficiency) can be metabolized to a variety of eicosanoids. EFA deficiency has been shown to exert an anti-inflammatory effect. The mechanism of this effect may in part be mediated through a decrease in leukocyte leukotriene formation. In contrast, studies using the novel fat

UNLABELLED: Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) represents a dysfunctional gut-liver-brain axis in cirrhosis which can negatively impact outcomes. This altered gut-brain relationship has been treated using gut-selective antibiotics such as rifaximin, that improve cognitive function in HE, especially its subclinical form, minimal HE (MHE). However, the precise mechanism of the action of rifaximin in MHE is unclear. We hypothesized that modulation of gut microbiota and their end-products by rifaximin would affect the gut-brain axis and improve cognitive performance in cirrhosis. Aim To perform a systems

Yak meat is emerging as an alternative to beef in Europe due to its taste, texture, and nutritional balance. Here, we report the European Alpine yak meat nutritional profile and the characterization of yak myoglobin (Mb), the haemoprotein responsible for meat colour and pro-oxidative processes. Nutritional analysis (macronutrients, amino acid composition, and fatty acid profile) confirmed high-quality proteins rich in essential amino acids, carnosine (∼66.8 mg/100 g meat), anserine (∼28.7 mg/100 g meat) and an optimal linoleic acid to α-linolenic acid ratio (10:1). Mb characterization included

Black rice diets are enriched with unsaturated fatty acids that are thought to be beneficial for neurodegenerative disorders in aging. Here we find that α-linolenic acid (ALA) and 11,14-eicosadienoic acid (EDA), which are naturally enriched in black rice, inhibit amyloid pathology, rescue cognition and extend lifespan in mouse preclinical models of Alzheimer's disease via allosteric activation of G protein-coupled receptor 120 (GPR120) in plaque-associated macrophages and activated microglia. We generate the structures of GPR120 bound to ALA and EDA. We demonstrate that ALA and EDA allosterica

In this study, we continue our research on Rubus ulmifolius Schott extracts obtained by supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) using CO2 as solvent. Extraction experiments were carried out at pressures of 300 bar and a temperature of 40 °C, SFE [300:40], on mature fruits of R. ulmifolius. The fatty acid (FA) profile of extracts was assessed by reversed-phase HPLC-DAD/ELSD analysis. The most represented fatty acids in the extract were linoleic acid (386 mg/g), oleic acid (210 mg/g), linolenic acid (112 mg/g), palmitic acid (48 mg/g), and stearic acid (40 mg/g). SFE extraction showed a total FA am

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of dietary supplementation with flax and alfalfa sprouts on fatty acid, tocopherol and phytochemical contents of rabbit meat. Ninety weaned New Zealand White rabbits were assigned to three dietary groups: standard diet (S); standard diet+20g/d of alfalfa sprouts (A); and standard diet+20g/d of flax sprouts (F). In the F rabbits the Longissimus dorsi muscle showed a higher thio-barbituric acid-reactive value and at the same time significantly higher values of alpha-linolenic acid, total polyunsaturated and n-3 fatty acids. Additionally n-3/n-6 r

To determine if meconium fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEE) in rat pups is a good biomarker of prenatal exposure and effect to alcohol, three groups of pregnant rats were studied: one control (pair fed) and two treatment groups given 25% alcohol at 2.2 or 5.5 g-1 kg-1 d-1. The pups were delivered on day 20 and, for each dam, were separated into a male and female group. The body, brain, intestines, and placenta of the pups were obtained, weighed, and stored at -20°C. The pups' intestines (as surrogate of meconium) from each group were pooled, and meconium was analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spe

Antimicrobial fatty acids derived from natural sources and renewable feedstocks are promising surface-active substances with a wide range of applications. Their ability to target bacterial membrane in multiple mechanisms offers a promising antimicrobial approach for combating bacterial infections and preventing the development of drug-resistant strains, and it provides a sustainable strategy that aligns with growing environmental awareness compared to their synthetic counterparts. However, the interaction and destabilization of bacterial cell membranes by these amphiphilic compounds are not ye

Because of the ability of certain long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) to prevent lethal cardiac arrhythmias, we have examined the effects of various long-chain fatty acids on the contraction of spontaneously beating, isolated, neonatal rat cardiac myocytes. The omega 3 PUFA from fish oils, eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA; C20:5 (n-3)] and docosahexaenoic acid [DHA; C22:6 (n-3)], at 2-10 microM profoundly reduced the contraction rate of the cells without a significant change in the amplitude of the contractions. The fatty acid-induced reduction in the beating rate could be readily reverse

Vegetarian and vegan diets are consistently associated with reduced cardiometabolic risk, despite providing minimal amounts of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs), key precursors of bioactive lipid mediators, raising questions about n-3 PUFA metabolism and requirements in plant-based populations. This review examines current evidence on the metabolic fate of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), its conversion to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and the implications for n-3 PUFA-derived signaling pathways. Although conversion efficiency is limited, it is

Goose eggs are valued for their rich nutrition and unique flavor, yet breed-specific differences in egg quality remain unclear. This study found that meat-type Zhedong White goose eggs (ZDG) had higher weight, yolk ratio, and yolk color, with rounder shape and potentially stronger eggshells, while dual-purpose Huoyan goose eggs (HYG) showed relatively lower values in these traits but a higher yolk index. Proteomics revealed higher activity in the vitamin digestion and absorption pathway in ZDG, and metabolomics indicated enhanced metabolism of unsaturated fatty acids and α-linolenic acid. Inte

Infant formula (IF) is a vital nutritional source for infants. However, its sensory quality deteriorates during prolonged storage, impacting consumer acceptance. This study investigated the stage-specific sensory deterioration mechanisms and the predictive modeling of IFs during storage by integrating flavoromics, fatty acid dynamics, and machine learning. Quantitative descriptive analysis identified six key attributes driving quality loss, with one-stage IF showing the earliest and most pronounced decline. Volatile compound profiling revealed aldehydes (hexanal, octanal) and ketones as domina

The current study was to investigate how microwave on flaxseed affected the physicochemical stability and gastrointestinal digestion of oil bodies (OBs) in flaxseed milk. Flaxseed was subjected to moisture adjustment (30-35 wt%, 24 h), and microwave exposure (0-5 min, 700 W). Microwave treatment slightly weakened the physical stability of flaxseed milk indicated by Turbiscan Stability Index, but there were no visual phase separation during 21 days of storage at 4 °C. Upon microwave treatment, OBs experienced the layer-by-layer encapsulation into loose interface embedding by storage protein-gu

Maternal obesity and the imbalance in linoleic acid (C18:2 n-6, LA) and alpha-linolenic acid (C18:3 n-3, ALA) levels are related with hepatic disturbances in the offspring. However, whether these alterations are present during fetal life is not well understood. Obese and normal weight pregnant women were recruited to determine fatty acids (FAs) consumption, FAs profile (in maternal erythrocytes, placenta and neonatal very low-density lipoproteins VLDL) and biomarkers of fetal liver function, such as gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and albumin, in umbilical cord blood.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is gradually becoming one of the most common and health-endangering diseases. Flaxseed powder (FLA) is rich in α-linolenic acid, dietary fiber, lignans, and other active ingredients, which have lipid-lowering and anti-inflammatory effects. Here, we investigated whether the FLA improves host metabolism by gut bacteria modulation and further bile acid modulation in mice fed a high-fat diet. At the end of the experiment, we found that FLA can significantly reduce the body weight, body fat content, and serum TG, LDL-C, and TNF-α levels of mice, and improve

Mfsd2a is the transporter for docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid, across the blood brain barrier (BBB). Defects in Mfsd2a are linked to ailments from behavioral and motor dysfunctions to microcephaly. Mfsd2a transports long-chain unsaturated fatty-acids, including DHA and α-linolenic acid (ALA), that are attached to the zwitterionic lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) headgroup. Even with the recently determined structures of Mfsd2a, the molecular details of how this transporter performs the energetically unfavorable task of translocating and flipping lysolipids across the lipid bilay
