Abbe Flap Reconstruction of the Upper Lip.

Reconstruction of substantial-sized upper lip defects may require an Abbe flap reconstruction to avoid excessive tightness and deformity. The design of the Abbe or lip switch flap harvested from the lower lip is important for a satisfactory aesthetic and functional result. Harvest of the flap is performed to enable a definitive inset into the defect. The video that accompanies this article depicts rotation of an Abbe flap into a philtral defect created by basal cell carcinoma excision.

Photodynamic therapy for keratoacanthoma on the upper lip.

BACKGROUND: Keratoacanthoma (KA) is a cutaneous neoplasm, which is similar to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) clinically, cytologically, and histopathologically. Surgical resection is the first choice for treating KA, but it may be impractical when a KA is located in a cosmetically sensitive area. OBSERVATION: We describe a patient with a nodule on the right upper lip. We performed a surgical biopsy to obtain a histopathological diagnosis. Specimen analysis revealed a diagnosis of KA. As the tumor was located in the upper lip, a direct resection may require a flap to reconstruct the lip shape; …

Reconstruction of Defects Involving the Lip and Chin.

Successful perioral reconstruction is the result of consideration of both functional and esthetic goals. The lips are complex esthetic units with multiple tissue layers and distinct anatomic landmarks. Reconstruction can be difficult due to variables affecting the defect, such as size, depth, location, and involvement of adjacent subunits. There are many local flaps that can be used to match the complex tissue layers and anatomic landmarks. Use of the same reconstructive principles can be applied to secondary reconstruction to attain a successful outcome. This article focuses on local reconstr…

Psychological Problems and Cleft Lip and/or Palate.

We read with great interest the article entitled "Diagnóstico de fisura labio palatina en niños pequeños de Nicaragua: impacto del diagnóstico a nivel familiar". It is well known that children with CL/P are at risk for psychological problems. In this connection, we would like to briefly discuss the finding of the study of Ortega and Vázquez (2018).

Carcinoma cuniculatum of the lip: A case report.

Carcinoma cuniculatum, a very well differentiated sub-type of epidermoid carcinoma, is a rare invasive tumor with a low risk of metastasis. It principally affects the lower limbs, notably the soles of the feet. Facial involvement is exceptional. A case of a patient with carcinoma cuniculatum of the lower lip is presented and diagnostic difficulties of head locations of this tumor, as well as their management are discussed.

The refinement of the median tubercle of cleft lip.

AIM: Repair of cleft lip aims to bring symmetry and provide normal aesthetics for the lip. Several techniques have been employed; however, the finer aspect of median lip tubercle has not been emphasised in cleft lip repair. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We have modified cleft lip repair, both unilateral and bilateral, preserving all the tissues of the median tubercle to provide normal-looking median tubercle of the lip. The modified technique was carried out by a single surgeon on 322 cases of unilateral cleft lip and 68 cases of bilateral cleft lip. Follow-up was done for 1-3 years on these childre…

Recurrent painful lesions on the lower lip.

Sitosterolemia is a rare autosomal recessive disorder of lipid metabolism, with varied incidence rates of 1/200 000 to 1/1 000 000. The condition often presents prepubertally, but is commonly misdiagnosed as familial hypercholesterolemia. We want to raise clinical suspicion across pediatric generalists and subspecialties with our case report of a 7-year-old girl who presented via ophthalmology following the surgical removal of a lipid keratopathy of her cornea. Four years before her presentation at ophthalmology, she also underwent surgical excision of a large xanthoma from her left buttock. T…

Oral lichenoid lesions of the upper lip.

BACKGROUND: Oral lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory disease of unknown etiology. It is characterized by notable heterogeneity in clinical presentation and behavior. MAIN OBSERVATIONS: We describe 3 patients with lichenoid lesions of the upper lip and upper anterior gingiva. These cases probably represent a clinical subtype of lichenoid lesions associated with microbial antigenicity and are characterized by persistency. All three patients had a long history of previous ineffective treatments and all three showed an excellent response to a combination of clarithromycin (2 x 250 mg/day) and…

PREVALENCE OF CLEFT LIP AND PALATE IN GEORGIA.

Cleft lip and palate take significant place in congenital malformations. We aimed to study epidemiological peculiarities of these pathologies in Georgia for 2006-2015. We compared magnitude of its distribution with the data from 1981-1990. Prevalence of cleft lip and palate in Georgia in 2006-2015 was 0.95±0.04 per 1000 live births, while in 1981-1990- it was 1.05, i.e. in contrast to 1980's frequency of these pathological conditions decreased to some extent. Distribution of cleft lip and palate varies across the country regions. The most intensive spread has been observed in Mtskheta-Mtianeti…

Mucocele on Lower Lip: A Case Series.

Mucocele is a common salivary gland disorder that can appear in the lacrimal sac, paranasal sinuses, oral cavity, appendix, or gall bladder. These lesions occur due to mucous accumulation resulting from the alteration of minor salivary glands. Lower lip is the most common site of occurrence of these lesions in the oral cavity and most probable cause is trauma or habit of lip biting. Diagnosis is mainly clinical due to its pathognomonic presentation. We report a case series of mucocele in children treated by conventional surgical excision of the lesion.

Glial heterotopia of the lip: A rare presentation.

Glial heterotopia represents collections of normal glial tissue in an abnormal location distant to the central nervous system or spinal canal with no intracranial connectivity. Nasal gliomas are non-neoplastic midline tumours, with limited growth potential and no similarity to the central nervous system gliomas. The nose and the nasopharynx are the most common sites of location. Existence of glial heterotopia in the lip region is a rare developmental disorder. We report a case of large glial heterotopia in the upper lip region in a full-term female newborn which had intracranial extension with…

Congenital Midline Sinus of the Upper Lip.

An extremely rare patient of congenital midline sinus of the upper lip in a 2-year-old boy is presented. The sinus was located on the midline of the philtrum just below the base of the columella. Surgical removal of the sinus was performed via an extra- and inraoral approach. Histopathological examination of the resected sinus revealed it to be lined by keratinized stratified squamous epithelium with sebaceous glands and hair follicles. Three postulates can account for the formation of the congenital midline sinus of the upper lip: the fusion theory, the merging theory, and the invagination th…
