INTRODUCTION: The primary treatment method for lower lip cancer is surgery. The defects that occur after resections are restored using various methods depending on their localization and size.
AIM: The aim of the study is to estimate the effectiveness of the reconstruction for defects formed after radical resections performed due to lower lip cancer.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The clinical outcomes after various reconstruction methods were studied in 102 patients with lower lip cancer who underwent radical resections. The selection of reconstruction methods was based on the size and localization

Lips play a crucial role in facial aesthetics, and lip defects not only impact appearance but also function. Repairing lip defects has long been a big challenge for surgeons. Currently, "V" shaped excisions are commonly employed in lip tumor surgeries, encompassing both the lesion and surrounding normal tissue, which facilitates wound closure. However, this technique may result in the loss of transverse lip width, leading to microstomia and affecting aesthetics. Additionally, the removal of a significant amount of normal tissue can result in noticeable vertical scars. To address these limitati

Reconstruction of vermillion defects of the lower lip requires careful consideration of functional and aesthetic aspects. Traditionally, various local flap methods involving tissue advancement from the corner of the mouth, lateral chin, and medial cheek have been commonly employed to fill lower lip defects. However, these approaches have inherent limitations, which include technical complexity, disruption of the orbicularis oris muscle, lip tightening, microstomia, and visible scarring. To overcome these limitations, we employed a free myomucosal composite graft from the lower lip to reconstru

PURPOSE: Repair of large defects caused by lip cancer resection is often a challenge for surgeons. The aim of this study was to explore the treatment and outcomes of lower lip reconstruction with a novel surgical procedure after lip cancer ablation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective case-series study involving patients who underwent lower lip cancer resection between January 2014 and December 2017 at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, The Second Xiangya Hospital, Central South University. The shape, volume, and symmetry of the lips were evaluated after the oper

Congenital fibropapillomatosis of the gingiva and oral mucosa and epidermal hyperplasia of the lip are described, for the first time, in two newborn lambs. Expression of the E5 oncoprotein of bovine deltapapillomavirus types 2 (BPV-2) and -13 (BPV-13) was detected in both fibropapillomas and the hyperplastic epidermal cells suggesting the BPV infection was the cause of the proliferative lesions. No DNA sequences of BPV-1 and BPV-14 were detected. Both BPV-2 and BPV-13 DNA were also amplified from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of the newborn lambs' dams. The concordance between BPV

Sialolithiasis is the occurrence of calcified masses within salivary ducts or glands, formed by deposition of calcium salts around a central nidus of organic material. A case is reported which affected an accessory salivary gland of the upper lip.

Aesthetic units of the face have been previously described. The lip itself may be divided into smaller topographic subunits. The lateral subunit is bordered by philtrum column, nostril sill, alar base, and nasolabial crease, while the medial topographic subunit is one-half the philtrum. When a large part of a subunit has been lost, replacing the entire subunit rather than simply patching the defect often gives a superior result. The only tissue suitable for the aesthetic restoration of moderate-sized defects of the upper lip is lower lip. An exact pattern is outlined and an Abbé flap is taken

IMPORTANCE: Although the lip is considered a high-risk location in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC), it has not been established whether this risk stems from vermilion or cutaneous locations or both.
OBJECTIVE: To compare differences in risks of recurrence, metastasis, and death from cSCCs on the vermilion vs cutaneous lip.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Retrospective cohort study of 303 patients with 310 primary cSCCs of the lip (138 cutaneous, 172 vermilion) diagnosed between 2000 and 2015 at 2 academic tertiary care centers in Boston, Massachusetts.

Through the dissection and localization of the cutaneous zygomatic branch, as previously described by the authors, a vessel is available that plays an important role in reconstructive surgery. The performance of this anatomical study has enabled designing of the so-called zygomatic flap, which can be considered as a further possibility in the reconstruction of soft-tissue defects of the upper lip and nose. This new island axial pattern flap provides a reliable source of skin, with color match for facial resurfacing, and leaves a well-hidden donor site similar to that of the nasolabial flap. Th

BACKGROUND: Although several techniques have been described for total lower-lip reconstruction, it is still a major reconstructive challenge, which often requires lengthy and risky microsurgical procedures.
PURPOSE: Here, we present a new local procedure, namely, bilateral musculocutaneous unequal-Z procedure for functional reconstruction of total lower-lip defects.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this technique, 2 musculocutaneous flaps including the depressor anguli oris and platysma muscles, respectively, are used in an unequal Z-plasty manner on each side of the defect. The lip defect is closed

Between 1997 and 2022, 108 patients underwent the lip-splitting mandibulotomy approach (LSMA) as part of the surgical treatment for oral (49 patients) and oropharyngeal (59) tumors. Seventy-two tumors were primary, and 36 were recurrent/persistent; the most common histology was squamous cell carcinoma (99). Immediate reconstruction of the defect was performed using free flaps (72), pectoralis major musculocutaneous pedicled flaps (32), and local flaps (4). Margin status was assessed in all cases; free margins were achieved in 78 patients (72 %), while 30 patients (28 %) had positive or close m

BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus (CP) tumors are rare brain neoplasms that mainly affect the pediatric population. Unlike benign CP papilloma (CPP), CP carcinoma (CPC) is an aggressive cancer with a dismal survival rate. Despite chromosome-wide rearrangements, drivers of most CP tumors remain elusive except recurrent alterations in TP53. Studies of signaling dysregulation may bring biological understanding of these malignancies. Previous studies implicated NOTCH signaling in CP tumors; we developed mouse models of CP tumors driven by NOTCH activation and Trp53 loss, respectively. This work examined

BACKGROUND: Survivors of childhood cancer are at risk of subsequent primary malignant neoplasms (SPNs), but the risk for rarer types of SPNs, such as oral cancer, is uncertain. Previous studies included few oral SPNs, hence large-scale cohorts are required to identify groups at risks.
METHODS: The PanCareSurFup cohort includes 69,460 5-year survivors of childhood cancer across Europe. Risks of oral SPNs were defined by standardised incidence ratios (SIRs), absolute excess risks and cumulative incidence.
RESULTS: One hundred and forty-five oral SPNs (64 salivary gland, 38 tongue, 20 pharynx,

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the functional and esthetic outcomes of a chimeric innervated buccinator myomucosal-submental island flap (BMM-SIF) for large composite lower lip reconstruction.
METHODS: This retrospective study included five patients who underwent lower lip tumor resection and BMM-SIF reconstruction at the Hospital of Stomatology, Sun Yat-sen University, between August 2021 and February 2023. Lip function was evaluated using water leakage, cheek puffing tests, and superficial electromyography. Lip appearance was observed using photographs and evaluated through subjectiv
