SARS-CoV-2 infection has evolved into a pandemic and a Public Health Emergency of International Importance that has forced health organizations at the global, regional and local levels to adopt a series of measures to address to COVID-19 and try to reduce its impact, not only in the social sphere but also in the health sphere, modifying the guidelines for action in the health services. Within these recommendations that include the Pain Treatment Units, patients with suspected or confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection may be waiting for medical consult or interventional procedures for the management of

Ending all violence against children by 2030 is a core part of Sustainable Development Goals 5 and 16. A number of promising violence reduction strategies have been identified in research studies. However, we lack an understanding of the implementation and impact of these programs in respect to their delivery at a large scale or within existing service systems, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We advocate for greater collaboration between researchers, policymakers, donors, governments, non-governmental organizations, and program managers and staff to study how violence

Emergency physicians must be competent in caring for elderly women because they constitute the fastest growing segment of the population in the United States. Familiarity with acute geriatric gynecologic issues is crucial to providing satisfactory health care for these patients with complaints relating to incontinence, pelvic floor dysfunction, and other gynecologic conditions. Vigilant suspicion for malignancy should be maintained in facilities that service patients without primary health care or insurance. This article provides a systematic approach to emergency department management of comm

Chronic wounds cause morbidity due to local infections, sepsis, osteomyelitis, but also increase mortality in the most severe cases and in patients with multiple comorbidities. Their increasing prevalence, associated disabilities and relevant health costs make chronic wounds a real social disease. At a time in which we hear more and more about spending reviews and reduction of health care costs, the natural evolution of Medicine and Health Care is increasingly directed towards the achievement of high quality standards while at the same time, reducing costs. It is in this framework that a hub a

Objectives In a context where the rather informal ties between front-line practitioners can be conceived as a weakness to be formalized or a force to rely on, this paper explores and documents their conceptions on how they create, maintain and abandon their ties while helping homeless people. Methods Its empirical material is drawn from an interpretative case study on the liaison role of the Homeless Team (Équipe Itinérance). This case is based on semi-directed interviews with 35 practitioners (24 front line practitioners and 11 managers) from 13 Montreal organizations in the homeless sector. A

In March 2020, the worldwide outbreak of COVID-19 led to the declaration of a global pandemic by the World Health Organization. As a result of the rapid spread and severity of the disease, health services experienced unprecedented pressure on acute hospital systems. Many strategies were implemented to both curb the spread of the disease and manage its impact on health services. Field hospitals were one such measure, deployed as surge capacity facilities to provide solutions to patient flow challenges due to spikes in hospital admissions associated with COVID-19. In Ireland, a temporary Interme

Stinging jellyfish outbreaks represent a health hazard, causing contact dermatitis and systemic reactions. This study investigated the epidemiology, severity, and treatment protocols of jellyfish stings in a coastal area with high tourist development and frequent stinging jellyfish outbreaks of the central Mediterranean (Salento, Southern Italy), and the associated costs for the Italian National Health Service. In 2007-2011, 1,733 bathers (mostly children and females) sought medical assistance following jellyfish stings, the main cause of human pathologies due to contact with marine organisms.

PURPOSE: This paper is concerned with understanding and evaluating potentially diverse rehabilitation programmes. It helps evaluators and programme managers to focus attention on specific aspects of the rehabilitation process and select evaluation questions relevant to each.
METHOD: Distinction is made between the rehabilitation programme itself, the programme environment and the relationships between the two. For each of these areas, evaluation questions have been formulated. For services offered to individual clients, questions address whether the status of clients has improved, what interv

The development of primary health care in Jamaica is explored, tracing its early roots to the abolition of the slave trade, the collapse of estate-based services after emancipation and the subsequent establishment of the Island Medical Services in 1875. Most development in the health sector occurred after World War I in response to the high infectious disease mortality rates. The Rockefeller Foundation was asked to assist with the control of hookworm, tuberculosis, malaria and yaws. Its recommendations led to the growth of public health programmes (e.g. environmental health, public health nurs

Populations experiencing homelessness with diabetes may encounter barriers to accessing comprehensive diabetes care to manage the condition, yet it is unclear to what extent this population is able to access care. We reviewed the literature to identify and describe the barriers and facilitators to accessing diabetes care and managing diabetes for homeless populations using the Equity of Access to Medical Care Framework. An integrated review of the literature was conducted and yielded 10 articles that met inclusion criteria. Integrated reviews search, summarize, and critique the state of the re

BACKGROUND: In early March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a pandemic. In South Africa, the first case was confirmed in early March 2020. According to the WHO, disruptions in essential services due to the COVID-19 pandemic occurred worldwide. The COVID-19 pandemic affected access to maternal and child health (MCH) services in many countries, including South Africa. The study aimed to map and describe the existing evidence on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the access to and delivery of maternal, neonatal, and child health (MNCH) services in South Africa.

Light chain amyloidosis is a plasma-cell disorder with a poor prognosis. It is a progressive condition, causing worsening pain, disability, and life-limiting complications involving multiple organ systems. The medical regimen can be complex, including chemotherapy or immunotherapy for the disease itself, as well as treatment for pain, gastrointestinal and cardiorespiratory symptoms, and various secondary symptoms. Patients and their families must have a realistic awareness of the illness and of the goals and limitations of treatments in making informed decisions about medical therapy, supporti

OBJECTIVE: The recent outbreak of COVID-19 limited the resources of the National Health System necessitating the formulation of novel practice recommendations for oncological care. To date, management guidelines for cancer patients in case of pandemic are not available. Each center tried to manage its own needs and requests independently, often reducing access to treatment and diagnostic exams to patients. Here, we have described the management of cancer patients during COVID-19 infection with suggestions of some practical approaches applied by our Regional Center for Oncological Orientation (

BACKGROUND: Patients with growing and nonresectable liver hemangiomas should be followed up by a transplant center with extensive experience in complex liver disease. They could be treated on an emergency basis with orthotopic liver transplantation, with an expectation of good long-term results.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We describe the case of a 37-year-old woman with liver hemangiomatosis followed up for 8 years, who presented with bleeding requiring transfusions and developed hemodynamic instability. We listed her for emergency transplant before her sister's living donor work-up could be comp

Before the Second World War, private security companies provided guards for a small number of wealthy householders and local business owners in Britain. By the mid-1970s, however, the industry had expanded rapidly to offer a broader range of guarding and watch services to corporations, public authorities, educational establishments, and other organizations across the country. Leading British security firms also extended their operations overseas as they established subsidiaries across the former empire. Focusing on the largest company, Securicor, this article explores how private security comp

Individuals who work within a public safety organization, as well as the military, are particularly vulnerable to mental disorders due to the psychological risks associated with their professions. There are evidence-based interventions that support the treatment and management of these occupational stress injuries (OSIs); however, less is known about the unique contributions of the specific components of these interventions when provided within an inpatient setting, particularly for occupation-specific populations. Therefore, a gap in the literature is determining what portion of the change ob

This study aimed to investigate the penetration rate of child protection teams (CPTs) in medical institutions and associations between CPT functions and hospital services. We collected data in October of 2015 from 377 hospitals in Japan offering pediatric organ transplantation. The questionnaire included questions regarding the existence of a CPT, the number of child maltreatment cases discussed and reported per year, CPT functions including 21 items about staffing, manuals, meeting, prevention, education, and collaboration, and the services provided by the hospital. Of the 377 institutions, 1

Trachoma and Guinea Worm Disease (GWD) are neglected tropical diseases (NTD) slated for elimination as a public health problem and eradication respectively by the World Health Organization. As these programs wind down, uncovering the last cases becomes an urgent priority. In 2010, Ghana Health Services, along with The Carter Center, Sightsavers, and other partners, conducted integrated case searches for both GWD and the last stage of trachoma disease, trachomatous trichiasis (TT), as well as providing surgical treatment for TT to meet elimination (and eradication targets).
