PURPOSE: We propose a new classification of subcondylar fractures of the mandible based on ramal height shortening and degree of fracture angulation and present our treatment experience using this classification system.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eighty patients with subcondylar fractures of the mandible were evaluated. We categorized the fractures into 3 classes: Class 1 (minimally displaced), fracture with ramal height shortening: <2 mm and/or degree of fracture displacement: <10°; Class 2 (moderately displaced), fracture with ramal height shortening: 2 to 15 mm and/or degree of fracture displac

PURPOSE: The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate outcomes for 2 bone plating techniques used in the treatment of mandibular symphysis/body fractures.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients with adequate records treated for fractures of the mandibular body or symphysis by 2 miniplates or 1 stronger plate over an 11-year period were included. Demographic and outcome variables were collected and statistically analyzed to determine if the 2 treatments produced different outcomes.
RESULTS: Six hundred eighty-two patients had sufficient follow-up for inclusion in this study. There were no si

PURPOSE: Numerous previous studies already have proven that mandibles with a third molar are significantly more susceptible to angle fracture by external force. Similarly, other data suggest that the absence of a third molar increases the risk of condylar fracture, while concurrently decreasing the risk of angular fracture. We attempt to characterize the effect of a third molar on the incidence of mandibular angle and condylar fractures.
METHODS: This retrospective study reviews data from 385 patients, all of whom were seen in our clinics between February 2006 and November 2009. All data were

Dog attacks are extremely frequent and are thought to be responsible for an average of 250,000 minor injuries and emergency unit attendances each year. Children in particular are more likely to experience dog-bite injuries with 5-9-year olds most susceptible. The majority of injuries are to the head region, with the lips, cheeks, and nose often affected. Most injuries experienced are confined to the soft tissues; nevertheless, maxillofacial fracture is a potential albeit rare complication. The incidence of facial fractures in relation to dog bites is unknown; however, some have estimated that

OBJECTIVE: To assess the influence of post-and-core systems on the resistance to fracture of mandibular premolars restored with metal crowns and a 2.0-mm cervical ferrule.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: Forty extracted premolars were selected and divided into 4 groups of 10 teeth each. Samples were sectioned 2.0 mm coronal to the CEJ. Following canal preparation, four restorative treatments were performed: group 1, post and core cast in type IV gold alloy; group 2, prefabricated titanium post with composite resin core; group 3, prefabricated quartz-fiber post combined with composite resin core; and gr

BACKGROUND: A major complication related to excessive bone loss around implants is fracture of the mandible. This complication is most likely to occur in a very atrophic mandible. A 57-year-old woman presented with progressive pain and swelling that had been present for 5 days in the right frontal region of the mandible. An intraoral radiograph revealed a radiolucency around one of the implants in the interforaminal region.
METHODS: Ten years earlier, 4 hollow-screw implants of 10 mm length had been inserted in the interforaminal region of the edentulous mandible. Throughout the 10-year posto

Interruption of the postganglionic neuron in the sympathetic pathway to the eye is reported to be a common cause of Horner's syndrome in the cat, although there are few clinical reports identifying the site and nature of the lesion responsible. A case of Horner's syndrome resulting from trauma to the periorbital structures following reduction of temporomandibular joint luxation is presented. In this case, the ophthalmic abnormalities resolved spontaneously over eight days.

We examined the relationship between the presence or absence of mandibular third molars and angle fractures in Nigerians between January 1976 and July 1997. Information was obtained from patients' case records and radiographs.A total of 490 patients were seen during the study period, 408 of whom (83%) had their third molars present, and 76 of whom had angle fractures. Road traffic accidents (n =304, 62%) were the main cause of the fractures. Of these, 44 (14%) had angle fractures compared with 14/75 (19%) patients in whom the mechanism of injury was a fight or assault.Sixty-five of the 408 pat

Experience with patients referred to the Dentofacial Clinic at the University of North Carolina indicates that previous fracture of the mandibular condylar process may be involved in 5 to 10 percent of all severe mandibular deficiency or asymmetry problems. Since these fractures often go undiagnosed and since three fourths of the children with fractures have no growth deficits, the incidence of condylar fractures probably is much higher than commonly thought. Management of fracture patients immediately following the accident, during the postinjury stages of mandibular growth, and at completion

Mandibular fractures are a common occurrence, often associated with complex complications such as non-union and osteomyelitis. Non-union, the failure of a fracture to heal, can be particularly challenging in the mandible due to the limited soft tissue coverage and compromised blood supply in atrophic areas. Additionally, the presence of osteomyelitis, a bone infection, further complicates the healing process and increases the risk of implant failure. This case report aims to provide an overview of the management strategies for non-union of bone plating with mandibular fracture associated with …

Mandibular fractures are among the most common facial injuries requiring surgical intervention, traditionally treated using titanium plates and screws for rigid fixation. While effective, commonly used metallic fixation implants such as titanium and titanium-based alloys (e.g., Ti-6Al-4V), stainless steel, and cobalt-chromium alloys have been associated with complications including ion release, stress shielding due to elastic modulus mismatch, imaging artefacts, and, in certain clinical scenarios, the need for secondary removal surgeries, thereby increasing patient burden. To address these lim…

Forensic odontology (FO) is grounded in a well-established historical framework, necessitating adherence to minimum standards to ensure quality on an international scale. Nonetheless, these standards frequently fail to account for the considerable variability in challenges, resources, and practices at the national or local levels. The Dominican Republic, the second-largest nation by area after Cuba in the Antilles and the second-largest by population after Haiti, has exhibited one of the highest economic growth rates in Latin America and the Caribbean. However, it also faces complexities and c

INTRODUCTION: Mandibular injuries are a common occurrence in cats that are presented for maxillofacial trauma. Timely assessment and treatment of these injuries directly impacts a cat's return to function.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on a population of 109 cats that were presented for evaluation and treatment of mandibular trauma. Medical records and diagnostic imaging were reviewed to determine mandibular fracture location, morphology, and treatment. Follow-up data were obtained from repeat clinical examination and diagnostic imaging.
RESULTS: The most commonly injured anat

Fractures of the mandibular angle following surgical extraction of the third molar occur at an incidence ranging from 0.0034% to 0.0075%. The low incidence and the data present in the literature reveal how legal claims based on late mandibular fractures from third molar extractions are unlikely, being an uncommon clinical condition. The present case investigates the causal relationship between the fracture of the mandibular angle and the intervention of extraction of a dental element 3.8 in conditions of semi-inclusion and the possible hypothesis of dental malpractice. About two weeks after th…
