Association between maternal exposure to particulate matter (PM2.5) and adverse pregnancy outcomes in Lima, Peru.

The literature shows associations between maternal exposures to PM2.5 and adverse pregnancy outcomes. There are few data from Latin America. We have examined PM2.5 and pregnancy outcomes in Lima. The study included 123,034 births from 2012 to 2016, at three public hospitals. We used estimated daily PM2.5 from a newly created model developed using ground measurements, satellite data, and a chemical transport model. Exposure was assigned based on district of residence (n = 39). Linear and logistic regression analyzes were used to estimate the associations between air pollution exposure and pregn…

Maternal Supplementation of Low Dose Fluoride Alleviates Adverse Perinatal Outcomes Following Exposure to Intrauterine Inflammation.

Maternal periodontal disease has been linked to adverse pregnancy sequelae, including preterm birth (PTB); yet, root planing and scaling in pregnancy has not been associated with improved perinatal outcomes. Fluoride, a cariostatic agent, has been added to drinking water and dental products to prevent caries and improve dental health. The objective of this study was to explore the effects of fluoride supplementation using a mouse model of preterm birth and perinatal sequalae. Pregnant mice were fed low dose fluoride (LF-) or high dose fluoride (HF-) and given intrauterine injections of lipopol

Association between maternal antimony exposure and risk of gestational diabetes mellitus: A birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: A small number of epidemiological studies have suggested the association of antimony (Sb) exposure with type 2 diabetes risk. However, little is known about the relationship between Sb exposure during pregnancy and risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). OBJECTIVES: To investigate the associations of urinary Sb concentrations with GDM risk and blood glucose levels in pregnant women. METHODS: We analyzed the baseline data of 1789 pregnant women enrolled in the Birth Cohort Study on Prenatal Environments and Offspring Health (PEOH) in Guangzhou, China. Sb concentrations in uri

Maternal Occupational Oil Mist Exposure and Birth Defects, National Birth Defects Prevention Study, 1997⁻2011.

Workers in various industries can be exposed to oil mists when oil-based fluids are aerosolized during work processes. Oil mists can be inhaled or deposited on the skin. Little research exists on the reproductive effects of oil mist exposure in pregnant workers. We aimed to investigate associations between occupational oil mist exposure in early pregnancy and a spectrum of birth defects using data from 22,011 case mothers and 8140 control mothers in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study. In total, 150 mothers were rated as exposed. Manufacturing jobs, particularly apparel manufacturing,

Cardiac myocyte proliferation and maturation near term is inhibited by early gestation maternal testosterone exposure.

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a complex and common disorder in women, and those affected experience an increased burden of cardiovascular disease. It is an intergenerational syndrome, as affected women with high androgen levels during pregnancy "program" fetal development, leading to a similar phenotype in their female offspring. The effect of excess maternal testosterone exposure on fetal cardiomyocyte growth and maturation is unknown. Pregnant ewes received biweekly injections of vehicle (control) or 100 mg testosterone propionate between 30 and 59 days of gestation (early T) or between 60 an

Prenatal and Early Postnatal Exposure to Total Mercury and Methylmercury from Low Maternal Fish Consumption.

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of low fish consumption on prenatal and early postnatal exposure to mercury species. The samples of umbilical cord blood and maternal milk as well as interviewer-administered questionnaires were collected from 142 Slovak mother-child pairs. The mean total mercury (THg) concentrations in cord blood and milk were 0.949 μg/L and 0.376 μg/kg, respectively. The mean methylmercury (MeHg) concentration in cord blood was 0.504 μg/L. Fish eaters had significantly higher cord blood MeHg concentrations than non-fish eaters (p = 0.030); no difference

Hydrogen sulfide alleviates placental injury induced by maternal cigarette smoke exposure during pregnancy in rats.

Maternal cigarette smoke exposure (CS) during pregnancy is a well recognized causative factor for placental injury. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a gaseous signal molecule, has been shown to exert a protective effect against tissue injury in many organs. This study aimed to investigate whether H2S could alleviate CS-induced placental injury in rats. Pregnant SD rats were randomly divided into 4 groups: NaCl, CS, CS + NaHS (a donor of H2S) and NaHS. On gestational day 21, placental and fetal weights were measured. Placental H2S content was assessed by methylene blue method. Placental histological cha

Maternal Fenvalerate Exposure Induces Fetal Intrauterine Growth Restriction Through Disrupting Placental Thyroid Hormone Receptor Signaling.

Fenvalerate is an environmental endocrine disruptor that disrupts testosterone and estradiol synthesis. Nevertheless, whether fenvalerate disturbs placental TR signaling remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate whether maternal fenvalerate exposure causes fetal intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and to explore the role of placental thyroid hormone receptor (TR) signaling. Pregnant mice except controls were orally administered to fenvalerate (0.2, 2.0, or 20 mg/kg) daily throughout pregnancy. As expected, fetal weight was lowered in dams that were administered with 20.0 mg/

Impairment of Central Chemoreception in Neonatal Rats Induced by Maternal Cigarette Smoke Exposure during Pregnancy.

It has been postulated that prenatal cigarette smoke exposure (CSE) increases the risk for sudden infant death syndrome. The victims of infant death syndrome suffer from respiratory abnormalities, such as central apnea, diminished chemoreflex and alteration in respiratory pattern during sleep. However, no experimental evidence on CSE model exists to confirm whether prenatal CSE gives rise to reduction of neonatal central chemoreception in in vitro preparations in absence of peripheral sensory feedback. The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that maternal CSE during pregnancy d

Maternal exposure to di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate disrupts placental growth and development in pregnant mice.

Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is used as a plasticizer and widely dispersed in the environment. DEHP exposure reduces embryo implantations, increases embryonic loss, and decreases fetal body weights. However, no detailed information is available about the effect of DEHP on the placentation during pregnancy. Thus, our aim was to explore the effect of DEHP on the growth and development of placenta in vivo. Mice were administered DEHP by gavages at 125, 250, 500 mg/kg/day from gestational days (GD) 1 until sacrifice. Results showed that DEHP treatment significantly reduced the weight of plac

Maternal exposure to tamoxifen during pregnancy increases carcinogen-induced mammary tumorigenesis among female rat offspring.

Tamoxifen is under investigation as a potential chemopreventive agent in women of child-bearing age who are at an increased risk to develop breast cancer. However, because tamoxifen may act as an estrogen in the fetus and high fetal estrogenic activity, in turn, may increase subsequent breast cancer risk, we wanted to determine the effects of a maternal exposure to tamoxifen during pregnancy on offspring's susceptibility to mammary tumorigenesis. Pregnant rats were injected s.c. with 20 microg of tamoxifen or oil vehicle daily during days 15 and 20 of gestation. In utero exposure to tamoxifen …

Maternal SO2 exposure and birthweight reduction during COVID-19 lockdown and quarantine in East China.

BACKGROUND: Low birthweight remains a global public health challenge. While maternal exposure to certain air pollutants is known to adversely affect fetal growth, the association with sulfur dioxide (SO2) has been inconsistent. The COVID-19 lockdown provided a unique quasi-natural experiment to reassess the relationship under altered emission patterns. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 21, 777 term singleton births in Southern Zhejiang Province, East China, from 2020 to 2022. We estimated maternal SO2 exposure using a time-activity weighted model based on residential and w…

Association between maternal PM2.5 exposure and congenital heart defects in offspring: a time-series study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal exposure to air pollutants are associated with congenital heart defects (CHDs), yet fundamental questions remain unclear: which pollutant matters most, which exposure window is most critical, and whether susceptibility differs by offspring sex. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between maternal PM2.5 exposure during periconception (from 4 weeks before conception to 28 weeks of gestation) and offspring CHD risk in urban districts of Chongqing (2018 ~ 2021), and to identify the key exposure windows. METHODS: Data on birth defects and air quality in urban Chongqing were…

Maternal nonylphenol exposure induces offspring intestinal injury and enteric neuronal defects involving proinflammatory macrophage polarization.

Nonylphenol (NP), an environmental endocrine disruptor with estrogenic activity, has been reported to exert marked neurotoxic effects. Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR) is a congenital intestinal disease characterized by the absence of enteric neurons in the gut. However, it remains unclear whether maternal exposure to NP would induce HSCR-related intestinal lesions in the offspring. Sprague Dawley rat model of maternal NP exposure during pregnancy was established to explore the effects of prenatal NP exposure on the development of enteric nervous system in offspring. In vivo and in vitro experime…

Maternal-fetal transfer of emerging bisphenols: Exposure profile and potential link to latrogenic preterm birth.

Bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogues are widely used in consumer products, raising concerns about their health risks, particularly during pregnancy. This study investigated the maternal-fetal transfer of BPA and its 20 alternatives by analyzing first urine samples from 90 newborns in Southern China. Over 95 % of samples contained 2-11 bisphenols, confirming their maternal-fetal transfer and mixed exposure profiles among newborns. The emerging bisphenols bis(3-allyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)sulfone (TGSA) and 4-benzyloxyphenyl 4-hydroxyphenyl sulfone (BPS-MPE) exhibited high detection frequencies of 73-8
