Mainstreaming nutrition into maternal and child health programmes: scaling up of exclusive breastfeeding.

Interventions to promote exclusive breastfeeding have been estimated to have the potential to prevent 13% of all under-5 deaths in developing countries and are the single most important preventive intervention against child mortality. According to World Health Organization and United Nations Children Funds (UNICEF), only 39% infants are exclusively breastfed for less than 4 months. This review examines programme efforts to scale up exclusive breastfeeding in different countries and draws lesson for successful scale-up. Opportunities and challenges in scaling up of exclusive breastfeeding into

Pregnancy outcomes among native and foreign-born women in Taiwan: maternal health utilization.

BACKGROUND: As immigrant populations increase rapidly around the world and with most immigrant women being of childbearing age, their use of pregnancy-related healthcare has become an important health issue. However, there has been only limited research available on maternal health use by foreign immigrants in Asia. This study aims to compare inpatient use for pregnancy complications and type of delivery among foreign and native-born women of different socioeconomic status in Taiwan. METHODS: Using the 2001 National Health Insurance (NHI) database, 232,828 deliveries were identified, of which…

Health-seeking in fragile and conflict-affected settings: how armed violent conflict shapes maternal and child health-seeking behaviours.

BACKGROUND: Maternal and child mortality rates remain unacceptably high in fragile and conflict-affected settings, where insecurity, displacement, and systemic disruption hinder access to healthcare. Nigeria is one of the countries most severely affected, and continues to experience widespread maternal and neonatal deaths despite global and national efforts to achieve SDG 3.1. This study explored stakeholders’ perspectives on how armed conflicts shapes maternal and child health-seeking behaviours and outcomes in northeastern Nigeria. METHODS: A qualitative approach was employed, involving Key

Associations between maternal mental health, child dental anxiety, and oral health of 6- to 12-year-olds in Nigeria.

Maternal mental health affects their children's oral health. This study assessed the associations between maternal mental health and dental anxiety level, dental caries experience, oral hygiene, and gingival status among 6- to 12-year-old children in Nigeria. This was a cross-sectional study that recruited mother-child dyad participants through a household survey conducted in Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Data collected included the independent (maternal mental health risk, depressive symptoms, and child's dental anxiety), and dependent (caries experience, oral hygiene status, and gingival health status)

Using Mobile Health to Support Clinical Decision-Making to Improve Maternal and Neonatal Health Outcomes in Ghana: Insights of Frontline Health Worker Information Needs.

BACKGROUND: Developing and maintaining resilient health systems in low-resource settings like Ghana requires innovative approaches that adapt technology to context to improve health outcomes. One such innovation was a mobile health (mHealth) clinical decision-making support system (mCDMSS) that utilized text messaging (short message service, SMS) of standard emergency maternal and neonatal protocols via an unstructured supplementary service data (USSD) on request of the health care providers. This mCDMSS was implemented in a cluster randomized controlled trial (CRCT) in the Eastern Region of G

"We built it grassroots… birth by birth": circumpolar maternal child health workshop proceedings.

Maternity care across the Circumpolar North continues to be shaped by colonial policies, centralized healthcare structures, and the ongoing evacuation of pregnant people from their communities for birth. While these challenges are well documented, less attention has been given to the strengths, innovations, and community-led approaches emerging across Arctic regions. Building on previous engagements of the Circumpolar Maternal and Child Health Working Group, a two-day workshop was convened in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada, in March 2026. The workshop brought together Elders, Indig

Empowering maternal health: Resistance and aerobic exercises for glycemic control in gestational diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is one of the most prevalent medical and metabolic disorders which may lead to high-risk pregnancy. As per recommendation from the American Diabetes Association approximately 30 min of physical exercise on most of the days can improve glycemic control among women with GDM. This study has evaluated the efficacy of resistance and aerobic exercises to maintain optimal glycemic control and improve maternal outcomes among gestational diabetic mothers. METHODS AND MATERIAL: A quasi-experimental study was conducted among 132 study participants with GDM

How Does SNAP Access Prior to Pregnancy Affect Maternal and Infant Health Outcomes?

UNLABELLED: Policy Points Reimposing work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-by removing temporary, location-based waivers-causes a decline in food assistance participation among childless women. This loss of nutritional support prior to pregnancy is linked to tangible, negative health outcomes for their infants. Analyses show that, when work requirements are reimposed, there are statistically significant increases in very low birth weight and very preterm births. These adverse effects are found among first-time mothers, the group most likely to have been subject to

Same Average, Different Odds: Maternal-health Lessons for India from Rwanda and Peru.

BACKGROUND: India has reduced its maternal mortality ratio faster than the global average, reaching 93 per 100,000 live births in 2019-21 and 88 in 2021-23. The national figure hides a nearly nine-fold gap between the best and worst-performing states. Deaths that remain fall mainly on rural, tribal, and poor women, in whom the three classic delays in obtaining care overlap with poverty, distance, caste, and gender. POLICY AND IMPLICATIONS: The most useful lessons for India come not from wealthy systems but from countries that started poorer and still moved faster on equity. Rwanda combined a

Mapping Stakeholders in Mexico's Maternal and Child Health Network: A Net-Map Approach.

Maternal and child health care consists of providing quality care for the dyad mother-child, starting with prenatal care, early postpartum, and monitoring the growth and development of children during their first 1000 days of life. Maternal and child malnutrition remains a critical public health concern in Mexico, and it is still far from reaching the Global Nutrition Targets, particularly those corresponding to stunting, low birth weight, anemia, and exclusive breastfeeding by 2030. The objectives of this study were to: (1) identify the actors involved in decision-making regarding programs or

Structural Racism, Geographies of Opportunity, and Maternal Health Inequities: A Dynamic Conceptual Framework.

Addressing the grave racial inequities in maternal health requires a new generation of research that better operationalizes root causes of these outcomes. Recent frameworks improving the conceptualization of structural racism have illuminated the need for better conceptual clarity when investigating neighborhoods as a site of structural marginalization for Black birthing populations as well. In particular, better conceptualization of dynamic feedback in how neighborhoods are constructed and experienced, especially as they embed vicious cycles of place-based racialization, is integral to produc…

Fetal heart rate variability in relation to maternal physical activity and metabolic health.

Physical activity (PA) during pregnancy may have a positive effect on the fetal cardiac maturation which is reflected in a decreasing resting heart rate and increasing heart rate variability (HRV). Different types of PA, for example during leisure or work time, have differential effects on HRV; however, this relationship has not yet been investigated in pregnancy. In our work, we related different types of PA during pregnancy with maternal and fetal HRV. We assessed the levels of PA in 95 pregnant women between 28 and 32 weeks of gestational age using the Baecke Physical Activity Questionnaire
