Due to the frequent use and availability of the orthopantomogram (OPG), dental practitioners are more frequently confronted with incidental findings such as osteomas located in the maxillary/-mandibular bone or inside the maxillary sinuses. Osteomas are benign slow-growing osteogenic tumors, which frequently develop in the mandible. In the midface, osteomas appear frequently in the frontoethmoidal sinuses. Maxillary sinus osteoma is a rare entity. Also in asymptomatic patients, cranio-facial osteomas need to be further investigated for a precise diagnosis. The clinical importance of osteomas l…

Residual cysts are common odontogenic lesions of the tooth-bearing areas of the jaws. A case of an unusually large residual cyst that crosses the maxillary midline and occupies portions of the maxillary sinuses is being reported. Investigations included a panoramic radiograph, CT scan and a biopsy. The differential diagnoses were common odontogenic lesions, including cysts and benign tumors. The value of advanced imaging modalities is stressed when determining the presence and extent of lesions in complex structures such as the maxilla. The need to visualize the entire lesion beyond what may b…

Radicular cyst is one of the most common odontogenic cystic lesions found in the jaws. It is inflammatory in nature and found mostly in relation to a non-vital tooth. It usually presents at a later stage in life because the formation of the cyst is the last step in the progression of inflammatory events after a periapical infection. The cyst usually goes unnoticed because of its painless nature and small size. We present the clinical, radiographic and histological characteristics of a radicular cyst along with its management. Cystic sac was removed surgically under general anaesthesia after th

OBJECTIVE: Allergic rhinitis has been frequently associated with both acute and chronic sinusitis. Previous studies have shown an influx of eosinophils into the maxillary sinus after nasal challenge with allergen. The objective of this study was to determine, in humans, if the development of seasonal allergic inflammation, secondary to natural allergen exposure, leads to similar inflammation within the maxillary sinus.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, longitudinal study. Setting. Academic medical center and research laboratory.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Eighteen subjects were evaluated in and out of t…

Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma is a malignant epithelial tumour with low metastatic rate and infiltrative growth pattern. The palate is the most common site. Paranasal sinuses are uncommon venues for polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma. Here, we report a polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma case of the maxillary sinus, a very rare location. Although it is a low grade malignancy, progression may develop after a long time. Therefore, polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis even in rare sites in the head and neck.

Pneumatization of the maxillary sinus limits the quantity of alveolar bone available for implant placement and may result in a lack of primary stability and difficulty in achieving osseointegration. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively analyze a group of patients who had implants placed in the posterior maxilla, calculate the prevalence of sinus augmentation, and identify factors related to sinus augmentation. With institutional review board approval, dental records from a population of patients who had implants placed in the maxillary posterior region between January 2000 and Dece…

We report the case of a 25-year-old man with a history of recent facial trauma who presented with a mildly painful swelling of the left maxilla and nasal obstruction. The patient was initially diagnosed with left maxillary sinus osteomyelitis secondary to undiagnosed and untreated left maxillary sinus fractures. However, further evaluation revealed that the patient had diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: The crestal core elevation (CCE) technique is reportedly a less invasive procedure than the lateral window elevation technique. We retrospectively evaluated long-term outcomes of CCE procedures over an 11-year time period.
METHODS: Core preparations were made after extractions of 57 upper molars in 45 patients. Extraction sites were drilled with a calibrated trephine bur to an estimated distance of 1 mm from the sinus membrane. The trephined interradicular bone and underlying sinus membrane were imploded into the sinus. The surgical crater and residual extraction socket were fille

The anatomical structure of the maxillary sinus is fundamental to maxillofacial surgery. The presence of septa, located at the inner surface of the maxillary sinus, increases the risk of sinus membrane perforation during sinus elevation for dental implant surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anatomy of maxillary sinus septa.Data in this study was obtained from a total of 205 cases. One hundred and seventy-seven patients were partially edentulous (PE) whereas 28 patients had no teeth. Dental computerized tomography (dental CT) was used in the assessment of 410 sinus segments (205 …

Metal foreign bodies are occasionally found in the paranasal sinuses. Often they result from the escape of material through an oroantral fistula or from trauma. Rarely, they occur as a complication of a dental procedure. A literature review revealed only four other reports of iatrogenic dental bur lodgment in the maxillary sinus, all of which are in the dental literature. Otolaryngologists, who might be required to deal with this complication, must be knowledgeable about its management. In this article we describe a patient who was referred to our otolaryngology department for management of a …

The radiographic manifestation of malignant lesions of the maxillary sinus on dental radiographs may be nonspecific, making it difficult to differentiate the lesion from disease of odontogenic origin or more benign sinus pathoses. A radiopaque mass in the maxillary sinus, resulting from a malignant neoplasm growing within or extending into the sinus, can be easily confused with the mass of a mucous retention pseudocyst. Similarly, a malignant growth in the early stages of development can produce radiographic patterns in the alveolar process that may resemble inflammation of odontogenic origin.…

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumours (pPNETs) are highly malignant, small-cell neoplasms found mainly in children and young adults. Recent advances in immunohistochemistry and genetic typing have led to reports of a close relationship between pPNET and the previously difficult-to-classify Ewing's sarcoma. We report a case of pPNET involving the left maxillary sinus in a 23-year-old female who presented with a 2-month history of unilateral left-sided nasal obstruction, rhinorrhoea and recurrent bloody nasal discharge. A CT scan of the paranasal sinuses showed a large mass (10 x 7 x 3 cm…

Fifty-six patients (age range, 15-79 yr, average, 37.0+/-18.5 yr), with a clinical and/or radiological diagnosis of acute maxillary sinusitis, were prospectively studied with ultrasound (US) and computed tomography (CT). The imaging finding which supported the diagnosis of acute sinusitis with US was the identification of the hyperechoic posterior antral wall through the hypoechoic inflammation. The findings were compared to CT (3 mm axial sections). The sensitivity of US for maxillary sinus disease was found to be 66.7% and the specificity was 94.9%, which were similar to the plain film ones …
