Facial Trauma: A Retrospective Study of 1262 Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic injuries are the leading cause of death among <40 year olds, a good part of the working age population. Traumatic injuries are also the leading cause of lost productivity, causing more lost working days than cancer or vascular cardiomyopathy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively and statistically analyzed the characteristics of facial fractures treated between June 2010 and December 2016 at the Maxillofacial Adult Surgery Unit, Spedali Civili Brescia, Italy. DISCUSSION: Facial fractures are common in polytrauma patients, due to exposure of the cephalic end. The i

[Diagnosis and treatment of injuries to the frontal skull base].

The role of ENT surgery in the management of anterior skull base defects has become increasingly important in recent years. Transnasal endoscopic surgical techniques and intraoperative navigation enable a minimally invasive approach in a large proportion of patients, thus helping to avoid morbidity typically associated with neurosurgical subfrontal approaches. Whereas traffic accidents and sport injuries are the main causes of anterior skull base trauma in the civilian setting, penetrating injuries caused by gunshots and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) play an increasing role in the milita

Truview EVO2 Laryngoscope Reduces Intubation Difficulty in Maxillofacial Surgeries.

PURPOSE: Recently, there has been a dramatic increase in the use of the Truview EVO2 for the management of patients with potentially difficult airways. However, the comparison of Truview EVO2 with the classic Macintosh laryngoscope in patients with maxillofacial trauma remains unevaluated. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the intubation conditions with the Truview EVO2 video laryngoscope and the Macintosh laryngoscope in patients with maxillofacial injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-two patients with American Society of Anesthesiologists status I and II requiring

Submandibular intubation as an alternative for intra-operative airway management in maxillofacial fractures - our institutional experience.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Airway management in anaesthesia for maxillofacial surgical procedures is tricky at times when the nasal/oral routes ar … lications were encountered in the intra-operative or post-operative period. CONCLUSION: In complex maxillofacial injuries, when oral or nasal intubation hampers surgeon's field of view, submandibular intubation offers an effective alternative to short-term tracheostomy along with small risk potential. There is a need to emphasise its regular application in such cases s …

Mine-explosive trauma of the maxillofacial region: current state of the problem and description of a case from practice.

Military conflicts, terrorist attacks and wars around the world pose a wide range of questions to the medical community about providing medical care to military personnel and civilians with mine-explosive trauma, which is characterized by simultaneous damage of various anatomical areas, including the maxillofacial region. The purpose of this work was to describe a case from practice of treating a patient with a mine-explosive trauma, which manifested by a fracture of the right zygomatic-orbital complex and the upper jaw on the right. Using own case from practice, the authors showed that the tr

Anesthetic Considerations for Oral, Maxillofacial, and Neck Trauma.

Blunt, penetrating trauma to the ear, nose, and throat, and related structures are striking. Injuries may range from simple soft tissue wounds to complex injuries of the face, neck, and brain. Proximity of the cervical spine and airway complicate anesthetic management. A multidisciplinary approach is required. Airway control has highest priority in initial care. Management of airway, breathing, and circulation need to be tailored to the patient. Decisions regarding airway management, ventilation strategies, monitoring, and fluid and blood administration should be based on the patient's conditi

Alcohol and interpersonal violence may increase the severity of facial fracture.

The association between alcohol and interpersonal violence has been established in studies from a number of countries. We aimed to determine whether alcohol was a contributing factor in the incidence or severity of facial trauma. For 15 months we prospectively studied patients with facial fractures who presented for oral and maxillofacial review. Severity of injury was assessed using the maxillofacial injury severity score (MFISS). Of the 255 patients with facial trauma who presented to our tertiary referral centre, 202 had fractures of the facial skeleton. Most presentations were secondary to

Orbit fractures: Identifying patient factors indicating high risk for ocular and periocular injury.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Maxillofacial trauma frequently involves the bony orbit that surrounds the ocular globe. Concomitant globe injury is a concern whenever orbit trauma occurs and in severe cases can occasionally result in vision loss. The mechanism of injury, physical exam findings, and radiographic imaging can provide useful information concerning the severity of the injury and concerns for vision loss. Using these three tools, it is hypothesized that the patient's history, physical exam, and radiographic findings can identify high-risk maxillofacial trauma patients with concomitant ocula

Trends in maxillofacial fractures in Otago-Southland, New Zealand: 2009 to 2020.

AIMS: Fractures to the maxillofacial region can have a serious impact on quality of life. The over-representation of males in the occurrence of almost all types and mechanisms of these injuries has tended to divert attention away from maxillofacial fractures in females. This study aimed to describe trends in maxillofacial trauma in a New Zealand tertiary trauma centre over a 12 year period, with a particular focus on gender differences. METHOD: A retrospective audit was undertaken of records for maxillofacial fracture cases referred to Dunedin Hospital and Southland Hospital Maxillofacial Uni

Mandibular Fractures Epidemiology and Treatment Plans in the Center of Italy: A Retrospective Study.

The epidemiology of maxillofacial fractures is variable in different geographic regions. Economic and social conditions, laws and types of behavior can be considered the most important factors influencing these differences.Mandibular fractures were first cited in 1650 BC in an Egyptian papyrus. Today, these fractures are one of the most prevalent facial skeletal injuries.A 4-year retrospective study was performed and the trauma - related data were collected from medical and radiological archives. The analysis comprised patients admitted for mandibular fracture at Sapienza University of Rome -

Imaging features of electric scooter trauma: what an emergency radiologist needs to know.

Electric scooters have become very popular over the past five years. However, their growing popularity and their easy availability are strongly related to an increasing number of injuries. These accidents are more common among young people and typically occurred during the night. The great majority of patients admitted to an emergency department receive at least one imaging examination, which commonly is an X-ray or a computed tomography scan. In electric scooter trauma, the head, maxillofacial region, and upper and lower extremities are more vulnerable than the thoracoabdominal region and spi

The importance of the oral and maxillofacial surgery and traumatology team in the diagnosis of a cavernous carotid fistula: Case report.

Due to the anatomical proximity between the skull and the face, maxillofacial trauma can often cause injuries to cranial structures. Among these complications are carotid-cavernous fistulas (CCF), which are rare in maxillofacial trauma, although their etiology is usually traumatic. They are described as an atypical communication between the internal carotid artery and the cavernous sinus, which can generate a sudden change in the direction and distribution of blood flow between the brain and orbit. This paper aims to report a case of craniomaxillofacial trauma in which the patient evolved with
