Semantic memory and the human hippocampus.

It has been unclear whether the hippocampus is uniquely important for episodic memory (memory for events that are specific to time and place) or whether the hippocampus is also important for learning and remembering facts (semantic memory). In two studies, we assessed the capacity for semantic memory in patients with bilateral damage thought to be restricted primarily to the hippocampal region who developed memory impairment at a known time. Since the onset of their memory impairment, the patients have acquired less factual knowledge than controls. The patients also exhibit temporally limited

Cerebellar-cerebral circuits functional connectivity in patients with cognitive impairment after basal ganglia stroke: a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to assess the pattern of functional connectivity (FC) between cerebellar subregions, the basal ganglia (BG), and the cortex, and explore the relationship between FC patterns and cognitive function after stroke with BG infarcts. METHODS: A total of 39 stroke patients and 29 healthy controls were recruited. Four cerebellar seed points were selected, and the FC of each seed point with other voxels in the whole brain was calculated. FC and cognitive performance were compared between the two groups, and their correlations were analyzed. RESULTS: Stroke patients exhib

Correlation Between Hippocampal Volume and Autobiographical Memory Depending on Retrieval Frequency in Healthy Individuals and Patients with Alzheimer's Disease.

The hippocampus plays an indispensable role in episodic memory, particularly during the consolidation process. However, its precise role in retrieval of episodic memory is still ambiguous. In this study, we investigated the correlation of hippocampal morphometry and the performance in an autobiographical memory task in 27 healthy controls and 24 patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease (AD). Most importantly, correlations were defined separately and comparatively for memory contents with different retrieval frequency in the past. In healthy subjects, memory performance for seldom retrieved

Associative hallucinations result from stimulating left ventromedial temporal cortex.

Visual recognition requires connecting perceptual information with contextual information and existing knowledge. The ventromedial temporal cortex (VTC), including the medial fusiform, has been linked with object recognition, paired associate learning, contextual processing, and episodic memory, suggesting that this area may be critical in connecting visual processing, context, knowledge and experience. However, evidence for the link between associative processing, episodic memory, and visual recognition in VTC is currently lacking. Using electrocorticography (ECoG) in a single human patient,

The schema spectrum: Emergent structures and levels of abstraction in AI and the brain.

There is a long history of interplay between the brain sciences and AI in the area of schema theory. Schemas are typically defined as abstract mental structures representing prior knowledge, experiences, and concepts that capture how events unfold in different contexts and that alter how we learn new information. Classical models have treated schemas as being distinct from both detail-rich episodic memories and general semantic knowledge. Motivated by learning phenomena in modern generative AI, we propose that earlier connectionist theories that did not articulate any strict division between s

Evidence of Impaired Remote Experience-near Semantic Memory in Medial Temporal Lobe Amnesia.

Neuropsychological research suggests that "experience-near" semantic memory, meaning knowledge attached to a spatiotemporal or event context, is commonly impaired in individuals who have medial temporal lobe amnesia. It is not known if this impairment extends to remotely acquired experience-near knowledge, which is a question relevant to understanding hippocampal/medial temporal lobe functioning. In the present study, we administered a novel semantic memory task designed to target knowledge associated with remote, "dormant" concepts, in addition to knowledge associated with active concepts, to

Impact of stereotype threat on brain activity during memory tasks in older adults.

We report the first neuroimaging experiment to investigate the impact of explicitly activating aging stereotypes (i.e., stereotype threat) on brain activity during cognitive tasks. Cognitively normal older adults read about aging stereotypes or a control passage prior to taking episodic memory, working memory, and a non-demanding control task during fMRI. At the group level, stereotype activation did not impact cognitive performance or measures sensitive to stress and anxiety (physiological or self-report), but like prior work, highly educated and retired adults exhibited greater stereotype ef

Hidden Objective Memory Deficits Behind Subjective Memory Complaints in Patients With Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work was to test the hypothesis that patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) with subjective initial memory complaints (not confirmed by an objective standard assessment) and various phenotypes also show objective very long-term memory deficit with accelerated long-term forgetting. We tested patients with TLE with 2 surprise memory tests after 3 weeks: the standard Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT) and Epireal, a new test specifically designed to capture more ecologic aspects of autobiographical memory. METHODS: Forty-seven patients w

Autobiographical memory disturbance in depression.

It is found that overgeneral Autobiographic Memory (AM) disturbance is related to affective disorder such as depression. This article reviewed the conception and mechanism of overgeneral AM, which including Affection Regulation, Functional Avoidance, Capture & Rumination, Impaired Executive Control and the CaR-FA-X model. The relationship between depression and overgeneral AM is also reviewed, in both adult and adolescent patients, overgeneral AM is a risk factor of depressive disorder and AM deficits might be trait-like in depressive patients.

The degeneration changes of basal forebrain are associated with prospective memory impairment in patients with Wilson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Degeneration changes of the basal forebrain (BF) are suggested to play an important role in cognitive impairment and memory loss in patients with Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. However, little is known about if and how the structure and function of BF are abnormal in Wilson's disease (WD). METHODS: Here, we employed the structural and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from 19 WD individuals and 24 healthy controls (HC). Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and functional connectivity analysis were applied to investigate the structural and fun

Impaired Memory Awareness and Loss Integration in Self-Referential Network Across the Progression of Alzheimer's Disease Spectrum.

BACKGROUND: Anosognosia, or unawareness of memory deficits, is a common manifestation of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but greatly variable in subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) subjects. Self-referential network (SRN) is responsible for self-referential processing and considered to be related to AD progression. OBJECTIVE: Our aim is to explore connectivity changes of SRN and its interaction with memory-related network and primary sensorimotor network (SMN) in the AD spectrum. METHODS: About 444 Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative subjects (8

Spatial navigation and memory: A review of the similarities and differences relevant to brain models and age.

Spatial navigation and memory are often seen as heavily intertwined at the cognitive and neural levels of analysis. We review models that hypothesize a central role for the medial temporal lobes, including the hippocampus, in both navigation and aspects of memory, particularly allocentric navigation and episodic memory. While these models have explanatory power in instances in which they overlap, they are limited in explaining functional and neuroanatomical differences. Focusing on human cognition, we explore the idea of navigation as a dynamically acquired skill and memory as an internally dr

Prefrontal Activation During Effortful Processing Differentiates Memory Abilities in Adults with Memory Complaints.

BACKGROUND: Identifying individuals at increased risks for developing Alzheimer's disease (AD) is crucial for early intervention. Memory complaints are associated with brain abnormalities characteristic of AD in cognitively normal older people. However, the utility of memory complaints for predicting mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or AD onset remains controversial, likely due to the heterogeneous nature of this construct. OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether prefrontal oxygenation changes measured by functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) during an arduous cognitive task, previously sho

The role of executive functions in long-term memory: case report.

The role of executive functions in long-term memory has been studied. We describe a single-case study, consisting of a 45-year-old male patient, hospitalized for right frontal stroke. After the stroke, the patient had memory alterations in everyday activities. However, performance in short-term memory tests was not significantly altered. Long-term memory assessments included pre- and post-stroke episodic, semantic, and procedural memories. Specific skills involved in the acquisition of new learning (auditory-verbal and visual reproduction) were also evaluated, as well as executive functions. T

Associations between clinician-observed test anxiety and neuropsychological performance in older adults.

OBJECTIVE: As dementia diagnoses rise with population aging, understanding factors that influence neuropsychological performance become increasingly important. While research has established links between test anxiety and poorer test results in younger populations, its effects in older adults remain unclear. METHOD: A total of 342 cognitively unimpaired older adults from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center were included. Participants were categorized according to clinician-observed test anxiety using the Social Behavioral Observer Checklist into Anxious versus Non-anxious groups and

Homocysteine, vitamin B12, and folic acid levels in Alzheimer's disease, mild cognitive impairment, and healthy elderly: baseline characteristics in subjects of the Australian Imaging Biomarker Lifestyle study.

There is some debate regarding the differing levels of plasma homocysteine, vitamin B12 and serum folate between healthy controls (HC), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and Alzheimer's disease (AD). As part of the Australian Imaging Biomarker Lifestyle (AIBL) study of aging cohort, consisting of 1,112 participants (768 HC, 133 MCI patients, and 211 AD patients), plasma homocysteine, vitamin B12, and serum and red cell folate were measured at baseline to investigate their levels, their inter-associations, and their relationships with cognition. The results of this cross-sectional study showed t

Autobiographical Memory Specificity in Major Depression Treated With Electroconvulsive Therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Autobiographical memory in major depression is characterized by reduced specificity, which reflects the tendency to summarize categories of events rather than recall specific instances of events situated in a time and place. This widely studied cognitive marker for depression has not been extensively examined in patients treated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of a naturalistic cohort of patients receiving a course of brief-pulse predominantly bitemporal ECT for a major depressive episode. Patients completed the recent life s

Distinct Roles of Dopamine and Noradrenaline in Incidental Memory.

Episodic memory is sensitive to the influence of neuromodulators, such as dopamine and noradrenaline. These influences are considered important in the expression of several known memory biases, though their specific role in memory remains unclear. Using pharmacological agents with relatively high selectivity for either dopamine (400 mg amisulpride) or noradrenaline (40 mg propranolol) we examined their specific contribution to incidental memory. In a double-blind placebo-controlled human study (30 females, 30 males in total), we show that a memory selectivity bias was insensitive to propranolo

The convergence and divergence of episodic and semantic functions across lateral parietal cortex.

Decades of research have highlighted the importance of lateral parietal cortex (LPC) across a myriad of cognitive domains. Yet, the underlying function of LPC remains unclear. Two domains that have emphasized LPC involvement are semantic memory and episodic memory retrieval. From each domain, sophisticated functional models have been proposed, as well as the more domain-general assumption that LPC is engaged by any form of internally directed cognition (episodic/semantic retrieval being examples). Here we used a combination of functional magnetic resonance imaging, functional connectivity, and

Understanding the structure of autobiographical memories: A study of trauma memories from the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

How do we remember traumatic events, and are these memories different in individuals who experience post-traumatic stress? Some evidence suggests that traumatic events are mnemonically enhanced, or include more episodic detail, relative to other types of memories. Simultaneously, individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have more non-episodic details in all of their memories, a pattern hypothesized to result from impairment in executive function. Here, we explore these questions in a unique population that experienced severely traumatic events more than 20 years ago - individuals
