Incarcerated women have a disproportionate burden of infectious and chronic disease, substance disorders, and mental illness. This study explored incarcerated women's health and whether a Women's Health Clinic improved care within this vulnerable population. Retrospective chart reviews and focus groups were conducted. Poor access to care in the community due to competing social needs was described. Barriers to care during incarceration included lack of comprehensive gender-specific services, mistrust of providers, and fragmentation. Of 109 women, high rates of mental illness, partner violence,

Jails and prisons have become a final destination for persons with severe mental illness in America. Addiction, homelessness, and fragmentation of services have contributed to the problem, and have underscored the need for new models of service delivery. Project Link is a university-led consortium of five community agencies in Monroe County, New York that spans healthcare, social service and criminal justice systems. The program features a mobile treatment team with a forensic psychiatrist, a dual diagnosis treatment residence, and culturally competent staff. This paper discusses the importanc

OBJECTIVE: To identify the variables related to nurses' perception of recognizing mental health needs and implementing interventions in the context of Primary Health Care.
METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 239 nurses from Primary Health Care. The identified interventions were grouped into three components: universal interventions; interventions specific to mental health and psychiatry; and educational and managerial interventions. Participants assessed the feasibility of implementation, its relevance to their scope of work, and their self-perception of capability to perform t

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether therapists from orientations that do not explicitly target mentalizing-namely psychodynamic therapy (PDT) and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)-use interventions consistent with Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT), and how their use compares with MBT-oriented therapy.
METHODS: Seventy-five verbatim transcripts were randomly selected from audio-recorded psychotherapy sessions involving patients with personality disorders or subclinical personality difficulties. Therapist orientation was determined by self-identification (MBT = 25, CBT = 25, PDT = 25). S

In this article I examine the unintended consequences of global mental health reform in postwar South Lebanon. I follow the integration of mental health in primary health care centers. Three key tensions emerge: First, integrating mental health led to separating mental health from socioeconomic conditions. Second, culture was simultaneously conceived as a barrier to therapy and a local context requiring adaptation. Third, the use of personality disorders as psychological interpretations of social life resulted in psychologizing gender and class. The article contributes to growing ethnographic

Psychopathy has historically been conceptualized as a mental disorder, but there is growing evidence that it may instead be an alternative, adaptive life history strategy designed by natural selection. Although the etiology of mental disorders is not fully understood, one likely contributor is perturbations affecting neurodevelopment. Nonright-handedness is a sign of such perturbations, and therefore can be used to test these competing models. If psychopathy is a mental disorder, psychopaths should show elevated rates of nonright-handedness. However, an adaptive strategy perspective expects ps

There are few studies of sovereign citizens undergoing competency-to-stand-trial evaluations and little has been written about African-American or urban sovereign citizens. In this study, we examined competency-to-stand-trial reports of 36 New York City defendants who declared themselves to be sovereign citizens during their evaluations. All were men and 33 were African American. The majority denied recent or remote histories of psychiatric hospitalizations or substance use. Sixty-nine percent were deemed competent. Compared with those deemed competent, those deemed not competent were signific

Emergency medical services (EMS) clinicians operate in environments characterized by repeated trauma exposure, operational unpredictability, shift work, moral distress, and cumulative occupational stress. A substantial body of evidence demonstrates elevated rates of post-traumatic stress symptoms, depression, anxiety, substance use, sleep disturbance, burnout, and suicide among EMS clinicians and other public safety professionals compared to the general public. The implications extend beyond individual well-being, affecting workforce sustainability, clinical performance, and high quality patie

BACKGROUND: Patterns of co-occurrence among the common mental disorders may provide information about underlying dimensions of psychopathology. The aim of the current study was to determine which of four models best fits the pattern of co-occurrence between 10 common DSM-IV and 11 common ICD-10 mental disorders.
METHOD: Data were from the Australian National Survey of Mental Health and Well-Being (NSMHWB), a large-scale community epidemiological survey of mental disorders. Participants consisted of a random population-based sample of 10641 community volunteers, representing a response rate of

PURPOSE: Women in prison have been reported to show greater vulnerability to mental health problems when compared to women in the general population or incarcerated men. Despite growing research on prison mental health, fewer studies have examined correctional professionals' perspectives as they relate to the mental health needs and vulnerabilities of incarcerated women. This study aims to analyze correctional professionals' perceptions of the mental health needs and vulnerabilities of incarcerated women in Spain.

BACKGROUND: Trauma surgery patients are at risk for developing mental health sequelae following injury. In response, the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma developed guidelines for mental health care in this population. We aim to evaluate current practices, determine guideline adherence, and identify areas for improvement in the mental health services provided to trauma patients.
METHODS: We conducted a qualitative evaluation using semistructured interviews with hospital social workers. Nine social workers were interviewed. Data were analyzed thematically to identify the patient

In recent years, there has been a rising interest in the mental health of unaccompanied minor refugees (UMR), who are a high-risk group for mental disorders. Especially the investigation of predictive factors of the mental health of young refugees has received increasing attention. However, there has been no review on this current issue for the specific group of UMR so far. We aimed to summarize and evaluate the existing findings of specific risk and protective factors to identify the most verified influences on the mental health of UMR. Therefore, we conducted a systematic literature search.

UNLABELLED: Children from low-income families and rural areas are particularly vulnerable to developing emotional and behavioral problems. Implementing mental health intervention into after-school programs can serve as an opportunity to foster the well-being of these children. Arts-based interventions appear particularly effective at engaging children in reflections on daily challenges and processing associated emotions and thoughts, thus supporting their well-being.
STUDY AIMS: In collaboration with an after-school program, this study aimed to explore the perceived benefits of an arts-based

BACKGROUND: The Mental Capacity Act 2005 of England and Wales is a ground-breaking piece of legislation with reach into healthcare, social care and legal settings. Professionals have needed to develop skills to assess mental capacity and handle malign influence, but it is unclear how assessments are implemented in real world settings. Our previously reported survey found professionals juggling competing resources in complex systems, often struggling to stay up to date with law.The current follow-up study uses one-to-one interviews of professionals to characterise in detail six areas of uncerta

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted higher education worldwide, imposing strict isolation measures, transitioning learning online, and exacerbating existing social and economic inequalities. This literature review examines the pandemic's impact on the mental health of college students, with a focus on those belonging to minority groups, including racial, ethnic, migrant, gender, sexuality-based, and low-income populations. While elevated levels of anxiety, depression, and loneliness were observed across all students, findings indicate that LGBTQ+ and low-income students faced the hig

Violence and Abuse in Competitive Sports Abstract. Violence and abuse in competitive sports, such as physical and emotional abuse, physical and emotional neglect and sexual abuse, affect children, adolescents and adults alike and lead to severe physical, psychological and social consequences. In current medical and educational care concepts of athletes, there is a lack of consistent integration of sports/psychiatric, clinical psychological and psychotherapeutic, developmental pediatric and developmental psychological expertise. Problem areas arise from fine lines between harassment, non-physic

BACKGROUND: Prior research demonstrates a strong positive association between social integration (e.g., strong social ties) and individual health. However, researchers also emphasize that this correlation may vary by context and potentially reverse direction under certain conditions. In this study, we draw on competing criminological theories of peer relations to examine if social integration, measured by trust in peers, is positively or negatively associated with violence and mental health of men detained in pre-trial confinement facilities.
METHODS: We test our hypotheses with peer network

INTRODUCTION: To enhance mental health literacy among Chinese college students and prevent psychological distress, a comprehensive Mental Health Education Project was implemented. This study evaluates the efficacy of the project's intervention course in improving mental health literacy and examines its downstream effects on related psychological variables.
METHODS: Using a randomized controlled trial design, we recruited 2263 participants (age: 18-22 years, M = 21.1, SD = 1.87; 1312 males, 951 females) across five consecutive semesters. The intervention group completed a 3-month evidence-base

BACKGROUND: Deprescribing, a structured, planned, and supervised approach to medication discontinuation, is increasingly recognized as an imperative rather than an elective component of rational psychopharmacological practice. Deprescribing is particularly compelling in child and adolescent psychiatry, where, despite accumulating evidence for pharmacotherapy, uncertainties regarding long-term risks and benefits persist. This makes deprescribing an important and often complex clinical consideration. Despite growing international attention, deprescribing remains challenging to implement in routi
