Psychedelics and Mental Health: An Alternative Strategy to Treat Mental Impairments Triggered or Aggravated by COVID-19.

Despite the discovery of vaccines for COVID-19, one of the best security measures to contain the spread of the virus is social distancing and isolation. However, isolation might trigger negative mental outcomes, such as onset of a depressive and anxious condition, increased consumption of alcohol and drugs, relapse to substances of abuse, and even induce post-traumatic stress disorder. Interestingly, recent research with psychedelics suggests that when these substances are used in combination with psychotherapy, they may reduce these mental impairments. Nevertheless, scientists are still worki

To assess the psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on physicians in residency training, the collective symptoms of burnout, depression and anxiety are used to identify the residents' beliefs and clinical practices related to COVID-19 patients and their behaviors concerning disease prevention. METHOD: This observational s

Multi-Level Barriers to Prison Mental Health and Physical Health Care for Individuals With Mental Illnesses.

OBJECTIVES: People with mental illnesses are overrepresented in the U.S. prison population. It is well established that incarceration for this population poses physical and mental health risks including greater likelihood of victimization and suicide compared to the general prison population. Yet, research is less clear about how staff and services shape these prison experiences. The aim of this study was to examine how people with mental illnesses experience incarceration through interactions with correctional officers and treatment staff and their use of physical and mental health care servi

PTSD's blame criterion and mental health outcomes in a community mental health treatment-seeking sample.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe psychiatric condition that can manifest as a combination of debilitating symptoms, one of which is a distorted sense of responsibility for the traumatic event. The inclusion of DSM-5's PTSD D3 criterion (blaming self or others for the stressful experience) has received little research attention in regard to its relation to post-trauma mental health outcomes. To address this gap in literature, we examined the relevance of the clinical endorsement of the D3 criterion to PTSD symptomology and other posttrauma mental health outcomes. MET

Mental disorders and mental health symptoms during imprisonment: A three-year follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Data on the course of mental disorders during imprisonment are scarce. Longitudinal studies from high-income Western countries point to improvements of symptoms over time. The aim of the present study was to assess mental disorders and symptoms three years after baseline evaluation at imprisonment and to determine predictors of change in a South American prison context. METHODS: Consecutively admitted prisoners in Santiago de Chile were assessed at intake and reassessed after three years using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview and the Symptom-Check-List 90 Revised

Mental Healthcare Delivery in Rural Greece: A 10-year Account of a Mobile Mental Health Unit.

INTRODUCTION: Patients living in rural and remote areas may have limited access to mental healthcare due to lack of facilities and socioeconomic reasons, and this is the case of rural areas in Eastern Europe countries. In Greece, community mental health service delivery in rural areas has been implemented through the development of the Mobile Mental Health Units (MMHUs). METHODS: We present a 10-year account of the operation of the MMHU of the prefectures of Ioannina and Thesprotia (MMHU I-T) and report on the impact of the service on mental health delivery in the catchment area. The MMHU I-T

Inferior alveolar nerve trajectory, mental foramen location and incidence of mental nerve anterior loop.

OBJECTIVE: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex disorder comprising ovulatory dysfunction, hyperandrogenism, and polycystic ovaries (PCO). Several studies have used electrocardiography (ECG) to assess PCOS patients. We aimed to analyze the associations among QRS-T angle, hormonal parameters, and ovarian and thyroid sonography in PCOS. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Adult females with PCOS, but without comorbid illness, were included in our study. Demographic and clinical features (body mass index, Ferriman-Gallwey score, phenotype) were analyzed, as well as laboratory test results. Based on s

RESULTS: Of this cohort, 21.2% were aged 21 years or younger, 46.0% were Hispanic, 40.6% were non-Hispanic Black, 8.8% were non-Hispanic White, and 3.9% experienced solitary confinement. Maslow and mental health recovery: a comparative study of homeless programs for adults with serious mental illness.

This mixed-methods study uses Maslow's hierarchy as a theoretical lens to investigate the experiences of 63 newly enrolled clients of housing first and traditional programs for adults with serious mental illness who have experienced homelessness. Quantitative findings suggests that identifying self-actualization goals is associated with not having one's basic needs met rather than from the fulfillment of basic needs. Qualitative findings suggest a more complex relationship between basic needs, goal setting, and the meaning of self-actualization. Transforming mental health care into a recovery-

The Role of Mental Health Services in Addressing HIV Infection Among Women With Serious Mental Illness.

OBJECTIVE: This article reviews how mental health services can best prevent and treat HIV infection among women with serious mental illness. METHODS: This is a selective narrative review of the recent literature on mental health services and HIV. The author used the terms "HIV," "serious mental illness," and "women" to search Google Scholar. Women with serious mental illness at risk of HIV were found to be an especially vulnerable group. The evidence suggests that discussion of the mode

Smoking, mental illness and socioeconomic disadvantage: analysis of the Australian National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing.

BACKGROUND: High rates of smoking and lower rates of smoking cessation are known to be associated with common mental disorders such as anxiety and depression, and with individual and community measures of socioeconomic status. It is not known to what extent mental illness and socioeconomic status might be jointly associated with smoking behaviour. We set out to examine the relationship between mental illness, measures of socioeconomic disadvantage and both current smoking and smoking cessation rates. METHODS: We used data from the 2007 Australian National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing

Mental disorders and mental health problems, active component, U.S. Armed Forces, 2000-2011.

Mental disorders account for significant morbidity, health care utilization, disability, and attrition from military service; the health care burden associated with mental disorders has increased over the last several years. During the years 2000 through 2011, 936,283 active component service members were diagnosed with at least one mental disorder. Annual counts and rates of incident diagnoses of mental disorders have increased by approximately 65 percent over the last twelve years; this overall increase is largely attributable to diagnoses of adjustment disorders, depressive and anxiety diso

The Italian SEME Surveillance System of Severe Mental Disorders Presenting to Community Mental Health Services.

Mental health is recognized worldwide as a major public health priority for the twenty-first century. Different actions are needed, including developing or strengthening national mental health information systems, based on standardized indicators that allow national and international monitoring. In 2008, the national Centre for Disease prevention and Control of the Italian Ministry of Health and the Mental Health Unit of the Italian National Institute of Health (INIH) jointly launched a mental health information system named SEME (an Italian acronym meaning 'mental health epidemiological surve

The problems of offenders with mental disorders: a plurality of perspectives within a single mental health care organisation.

Managers, doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, social workers, psychologists, unqualified staff and service users were interviewed for a qualitative study of risk management and rehabilitation in an inner city medium secure forensic mental health care unit. Different professional orientations to service user problems were identified. Doctors focused primarily on the diagnosis of mental disorder, which they managed mainly through pharmaceutical interventions. Psychologists were principally concerned with personal factors, for example service user insight into their biographical history. Oc
