Construction Trade Work Is Associated With Accelerated Decline in Kidney Function.

BACKGROUND: Construction workers are exposed to airborne particulates, organic solvents, and metals-agents linked to elevated risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Few studies have evaluated whether construction trade work is associated with longitudinal changes in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), a key indicator of kidney function. This study examined the relationship between construction-related exposures and eGFR decline. METHODS: The cohort included 9192 participants in the Building Trades National Medical Screening Program (BTMed). An index of exposure to vapors, gases, dusts

Accelerated silicosis in sandblasters: Pathology, mineralogy, and clinical correlates.

BACKGROUND: With increasing reports of accelerated and acute silicosis, PMF, and autoimmune disease among coal miners and silica-exposed countertop workers, we present previously incompletely-described pulmonary pathology of accelerated silicosis and correlations with mineralogy, radiography, and disease progression in 46 Texas oilfield pipe sandblasters who were biopsied between 1988 and 1995. METHODS: Worker examinations included pulmonary function tests, chest X-ray (CXR), high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT), and Gallium-67 scans. Quantitative mineralogic analysis of pulmonary paren

Overview of environmental and occupational vanadium exposure and associated health outcomes: an article based on a presentation at the 8th International Symposium on Vanadium Chemistry, Biological Chemistry, and Toxicology, Washington DC, August 15-18, 2012.

Vanadium (V) has a variety of applications that make it suitable for use in ceramic production and decoration, production of pigments for a variety of products, an accelerator for drying paint, production of aniline black dye, and as a mordant in coloring textiles. Taking advantage of its hardness, resilience, ability to form alloys, and its resistance to corrosion, V is also used in the production of tools, steel, machinery, and surgical implants. V is employed in producing photographic developers, batteries, and semi-conductors, and in catalyst-based recycling processes. As technologies have

Work-related lung diseases.

Work-related respiratory diseases affect people in every industrial sector, constituting approximately 60% of all disease and injury mortality and 70% of all occupational disease mortality. There are two basic types: interstitial lung diseases, that is the pneumoconioses (asbestosis, byssinosis, chronic beryllium disease, coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP), silicosis, flock workers' lung, and farmers' lung disease), and airways diseases, such as work-related or exacerbated asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchiolitis obliterans (a disease that was recognized in the productio

Shell damage and mandible mechanics in the ant Messor wasmanni.

Ant middens represent accumulations of discarded materials and provide insight into colony-level foraging and processing behavior. While middens of granivorous ants are typically dominated by plant material, animal remains are occasionally present, yet their origin and mechanical basis remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the occurrence of gastropod shells in an external midden of the harvester ant Messor wasmanni and evaluated ant mandible mechanics to provide some background for shell fracturing. Midden material was collected during three sampling events and sorted by material typ

Behavioural regulation of mineral salt intake in honeybees: a self-selection approach.

Minerals are required in small amounts to sustain metabolic activity in animals, but mineral deficiencies can also lead to metabolic bottlenecks and mineral excesses can induce toxicity. For these reasons, we could reasonably expect that micronutrients are actively regulated around nutritional optima. Honeybees have co-evolved with flowering plants such that their main sources of nutrients are floral pollen and nectar. Like other insects, honeybees balance their intake of multiple macronutrients during food consumption using a combination of pre- and post-ingestive mechanisms. How they regulat

Intensive poultry farming: A review of the impact on the environment and human health.

Poultry farming is one of the most efficient animal husbandry methods and it provides nutritional security to a significant number of the world population. Using modern intensive farming techniques, global production has reached 133.4 mil. t in 2020, with a steady growth each year. Such intensive growth methods however lead to a significant environmental footprint. Waste materials such as poultry litter and manure can pose a serious threat to environmental and human health, and need to be managed properly. Poultry production and waste by-products are linked to NH3, N2O and CH4 emissions, and h

Extending standard testing period in honeybees to predict lifespan impacts of pesticides and heavy metals using dynamic energy budget modelling.

Concern over reported honeybee (Apis mellifera spp.) losses has highlighted chemical exposure as a risk. Current laboratory oral toxicity tests in A. mellifera spp. use short-term, maximum 96 hour, exposures which may not necessarily account for chronic and cumulative toxicity. Here, we use extended 240 hour (10 day) exposures to examine seven agrochemicals and trace environmental pollutant toxicities for adult honeybees. Data were used to parameterise a dynamic energy budget model (DEBtox) to further examine potential survival effects up to 30 day and 90 day summer and winter worker lifespans

Biologic markers of oxidative stress and nephrotoxicity as studied in biomonitoring of adverse effects of occupational exposure to lead and cadmium.

OBJECTIVES: In this work, we studied impregnation levels of workers occupationally exposed to lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd), usefulness of early urinary markers of nephrotoxicity, and occurrence of oxidative stress as the underlying mechanism involved in Pb- or Cd-induced adverse effects. Thirty-five men were recruited from a nonferrous metal smelter. Pb and Cd in blood (B-Pb, B-Cd) and urine (U-Pb, U-Cd) were measured. Relations between oxidative stress markers (malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, selenium, glutathione reductase, glutathione status, 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyg

Identification of occupations susceptible to high exposure and risk associated with multiple toxicants in an observational study: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2014.

Occupational exposures to toxicants are estimated to cause over 370 000 premature deaths annually. The risks due to multiple workplace chemical exposures and those occupations most susceptible to the resulting health effects remain poorly characterized. The aim of this study is to identify occupations with elevated toxicant biomarker concentrations and increased health risk associated with toxicant exposures in a diverse working US population. For this observational study of 51 008 participants, we used data from the 1999-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. We characterized

A Case Study of Brass Foundry Workers' Estimated Lead (Pb) Body Burden from Different Exposure Routes.

OBJECTIVES: The most pronounced occupational exposure routes for lead (Pb) are inhalation and gastrointestinal uptake mainly through hand-to-mouth behaviour. Skin absorption has been demonstrated for organic Pb compounds, but less is known about inorganic Pb species. Several legislative bodies in Europe are currently proposing lowering biological exposure limit values and air exposure limits due to new evidence on cardiovascular effects at very low blood Pb levels. In light of this, all exposure routes in occupational settings should be revisited to evaluate how to lower the overall exposure t

Neurological and neurophysiological examinations of workers occupationally exposed to manganese.

The nervous system is the major target of the toxic effect of manganese (Mn) and its compounds. Nowadays, neurological diagnostics is directed towards early detection of symptoms and abortive forms, and the cases of serious damage of the nervous system are no longer reported. The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of manganese on the functions of the nervous system in workers exposed to this metal in the ship and electrical industries. The study covered a selected group of 75 male workers (mean age 39.17 yr +/- 9.79; range 20-56 yr), including 62 welders and fitters, as well as

Toxic effects of chromium and its compounds.

Chromium was discovered in 1797 by Vauquelin. Numerous industrial applications raised chromium to a very important economic element. At the same time, with the development of its uses, the adverse effects of chromium compounds in human health were being defined. Trivalent chromium is an essential trace element in humans and in animals. Chromium as pure metal has no adverse effect. Little toxic effect is attributed to trivalent chromium when present in very large quantities. Both acute and chronic toxicity of chromium are mainly caused by hexavalent compounds. The most important toxic effects,

Nonprecious alloys for use in fixed prosthodontics: a literature review.

The physical properties of nonprecious alloys can differ significantly from those of alloys containing a high percent of gold. Relationships among constituents, physical properties, and handling characteristics of base metal alloys were surveyed. Toxicity of nickel, beryllium, and their compounds was discussed with attention given to the dental environment. Allergic contact dermatitis appears to be a health risk to certain patients from nickel-containing prostheses. Beryllium dust is apparently not a hazard in properly ventilated and exhausted grinding and polishing areas. Lack of data on nick

Clinical association between trace elements of tear and dry eye metrics.

Trace elements exposure is proposed to play a role in the pathogenesis of the systemic disease. Emerging studies have suggested that trace metal exposure may contribute to dry eye disease. Our study primarily aimed to investigate the association between trace metal exposure in tear samples and the presence of dry eye metrics in the shipyard industry. Overall, 84 eligible participants from the shipyard industry were included in this cross-sectional study. The parameters for identifying dry eye symptoms included O.S.D.I., SPEED, N.I.B.U.T., and ocular surface conditions, such as tear meniscus he

Trends in vanadium neurotoxicity.

Vanadium, atomic number 23, is a transition metal widely distributed in nature. It is a major contaminant of fossil fuels and is widely used in industry as catalysts, in welding, and making steel alloys. Over the years, vanadium compounds have been generating interests due to their use as therapeutic agents in the control of diabetes, tuberculosis, and some neoplasms. However, the toxicity of vanadium compounds is well documented in literature with occupational exposure of workers in vanadium allied industries, environmental pollution from combustion of fossil fuels and industrial exhausts rec
