OBJECTIVE: This is an update of an earlier study on the relation between exposure to arsenic in air and deaths from respiratory cancer. The purpose was to verify earlier findings of a supralinear dose response relation and to examine relations with other cancers, particularly those reported in studies on drinking water.
METHODS: An earlier study of 2802 men who worked at a copper smelter for a year or more during the period 1940-64 and who were followed up for deaths during the period 1941-76 was updated until 1986. Estimates of exposure for the period 1977-1984 were added.

We compared the point prevalence of cutting fluid dermatitis and transepidermal water vapour loss (TEWL) changes in groups of new machinists who (a) used a barrier cream; (b) used an afterwork emollient cream; and (c) did not use any cream (controls) over a 6-month period. The interaction between noise-induced hearing loss and otosclerosis remains unclear and controversial. In the present study, the effect of chronic noise exposure was examined in 31 patients with unilateral otosclerosis. Consideration was given to hearing loss at specific frequencies, the influence of age, and the effect of the size of the air-bone gap. Excretion of suprarenal hormones' metabolites was examined in workers producing ferro-manganese alloys. The subjects were exposed to manganese, iron , chromium compounds, thermal radiation, high temperature and noise. In comparison to the control group, those examined workers had increased excretion of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy-mandelic acid and 17-hydroxycorticosteroids. It can be assumed that this increase results from organism's physiological adaptation to negative environmental and working conditions.

Thirty-six smelter workers examined in this pilot study were found to have a higher prevalence of cough and dyspnea and lower baseline lung function than did 31 controls. The results of recent histopathologic studies of the nasal mucosa in nickel workers show that, in addition to metaplastic changes, there are frequently dysplastic alterations which are probably preneoplastic lesions.
