At interfaces connecting two superconductors (SCs) separated by a metallic layer, an electric current is induced when there is a disparity in the phases of the two superconductors. We elucidate this phenomenon based on the weights of the Andreev bound states associated with the states carrying currents in forward and reverse directions. Typically, current phase relation (CPR) in Josephson junctions is an odd function. When time reversal and inversion symmetries are broken at the junction, CPR ceases to be an odd function and the system may exhibit Josephson diode effect. This phenomenon has be

Ход выполнения metals play a vital role in a variety of biological processes, but excessive amounts can be toxic and are receiving increasing attention. Trace metals in the environment are released from natural sources, such as rock weathering, volcanic eruptions, and other human activities, such as industrial emissions, mineral extraction, and vehicle exhaust. Lifestyle, dietary habits and environmental quality are the main sources of human exposure to trace metals, which play an important role in inducing human reproductive infertility. The purpose of this review is to summarize the distribution of v…

This study investigates the skeletal accumulation of selected elements (Al, Ag, As, Ca, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Pb, Sr, Zn) in echinoderms inhabiting Barents Sea, an area impacted by human activities from northern Norway and Kola Peninsula, known sources of metal pollution. The primary aim was to have insight whether metals incorporation in the skeleton of Arctic echinoderms is regulated physiologically by the organism or influenced by abiotic environmental conditions (expressed as distance from the source of metal pollution). Metal concentrations were analysed in 17 species from fo…

The effects of Cu, Ni, and Cd on the Pinus sylvestris metabolome was studied in experimental conditions by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Structural changes in plant metabolite network became detectable on day 6 of exposure to the metals, 3-6 days earlier than visual signs of toxicity developed. Differences at the metabolome level arose earlier in a control group of plants, and specific effects of particular metals on the plant metabolome became distinct on day 9. Both nature and concentration of a metal equally contributed to the plant metabolome clustering. Plant responses (ch…

The Réunion harrier is an endemic raptor on Réunion Island. Several threats endanger its population, poisoning by rodenticides being considered as the main one currently. No information is available on its exposure to other chemicals notably trace metal elements such as lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and cadmium (Cd). The Réunion harrier is still a victim of poaching nowadays. When shooting is not lethal, animals may carry embedded shot in their body and thus be exposed to toxic level of Pb as demonstrated for other raptors. Moreover, recent monitoring suggests a decrease of its breeding success ove

This article focuses on a very peculiar habitat, the thin biofilm that covers the surface of rocks, cobbles, sediment grains, leaf litter, and vegetation on a riverbed. Species composition changes over time and depends on environmental conditions and perturbation of water quality. It provides several ecosystem services, contributing to the biogeochemical fluxes and reducing contamination by absorbing the pollutants. Biofilm into the Toce River (Ossola Valley, Piedmont, Italy) was investigated to assess its capacity to accumulate the metals and macroions from the water column. In this prelimina…

The role of metals in breast cancer is of interest because of their carcinogenic and endocrine-disrupting capabilities. Evidence from epidemiologic studies remains elusive, and prior studies have not investigated metal mixtures. In a case cohort nested within the Sister Study (enrolled in 2003-2009; followed through September 2017), we measured concentrations of 15 metals in toenails collected at enrollment in a race/ethnicity-stratified sample of 1,495 cases and a subcohort of 1,605 women. We estimated hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals for each metal using Cox regression and robust v…

In recent years, cannabis vaporizer cartridges have increased in popularity and availability, and there are concerns regarding exposure to heavy-metal compounds from their use. The physical components of the cartridge devices themselves have been implicated as a potential source of metal exposure, but it is not known if these metals migrate into the inhalable vapor. This study analyzes the components of vaporizer cartridges for 10 different metals and also collects aerosol mixtures from 13 randomly purchased commercially available cannabis cartridges from Washington State to compare their elem…

Single toxic metal exposure has been reported to be associated with impaired cognitive function, but less is known about the effects of combined exposure to multiple metals. The aim of the study was to investigate the potential associations and interactions of multiple metals with cognitive function in older adults using multi-pollutants approach. A cross-sectional study was conducted in a total of 2879 participants aged ≥ 60 years old. We systematically measured levels of 22 blood metals and used the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) to assess the cognitive function. The least absolute shr…

INTRODUCTION: Metal ions are known to accumulate in the thyroid and some play an important role in the function and homeostatic mechanisms of the thyroid gland. Certain metal ions are known endocrine disruptors while others are classified to be carcinogenic. Although higher thyroid cancer incidence rates have been reported in regions with high metal levels in soil and drinking water, including volcanic regions, the effect of heavy metals on the thyroid is still poorly understood. To investigate the association between heavy metals and thyroid cancer, a comprehensive meta-analysis was performed…

Iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) have many adverse effects on human health. Also, iron deficiency anemia and anemia in general are linked with an increased risk of various cancers, particularly blood cancers. It is known that subjects with IDA as well as smokers have elevated blood levels of toxic divalent cations, particularly cadmium (Cd2+) and lead (Pb2+). Cadmium is a proven carcinogen. Most of the circulating cadmium is bound to transferrin and apart from the target organs of cadmium accumulation, kidney and liver, tissues (cells) which highly express transferrin rece

While evidence has accumulated about the links between long-term exposure to air pollution and health, little is known about the health effects of airborne metals. In France, the law makes it mandatory to monitor atmospheric concentrations and deposition of some airborne metals, through measurements or modelling. But the available data are either too scarce or irregular, making them difficult to use in large-scale epidemiology: using mosses in the wild offers a welcome alternative. Mosses belong to the few vegetal organisms able to accumulate airborne metals. As such, they have been used for d…

Toxic metals have been associated with lower birth weight while essential metals have been associated with higher birth weight. Evidence for other metals is either inconsistent or limited in terms of number of studies. This study analyzed 17 urinary metals, individually and as a mixture, and their association with measures of fetal growth in the LIFECODES birth cohort. Ultrasound was used to measure abdominal circumference, head circumference, and femur length and measures were used to calculate estimated fetal weight at ~26 and ~35 weeks. We calculated the z-score based on gestational age at …

Anammox-based processes and microbial consortia have drawn extensive attention for their use in high-efficiency wastewater treatment technologies. Metals substantially affect the activity of anammox consortia and the quality of wastewater treatment plant effluent. Here, we explored the role of anammox consortia in terms of metals complexation in both single and multi-metal systems. Adsorption edges of single metal cations indicate that the adsorption preference was in the order: Pb(II) > Cd(II) > Cr(VI). A competitive effect was observed in multi-metal cations systems, with Pb(II) being prefer…

BACKGROUND: Hypertension-related disease burden is a major challenge globally, with an estimated 1.56 billion adults expected to be affected by hypertension by 2025. Environmental factors, such as metals, could be risk factors for hypertension, but the relationship between airborne metals and hypertension is rarely studied.
METHODS: Census-tract airborne metal concentrations (arsenic, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, selenium, and antimony) from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 2005 National Air Toxics Assessment database were linked to enrollment residenti…

Chronic exposure to metals has been linked to arterial stiffness. However, the effects of exposure to multiple metals on arterial stiffness have rarely been studied. We aimed to investigate the associations of 23 urinary metals with arterial stiffness in a panel study of 127 Chinese adults with 3 repeated visits. Urinary metal measurements were conducted once a day for 4 consecutive days of each visit. Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and ankle-brachial index (ABI) were measured in health examinations during each visit. Linear mixed models, least absolute shrinkage and selection oper…

Aging is a leading cause of mortality for the elderly and DNA methylation age is reported to be predictive of biological aging. However, few studies have investigated the associations between multiple metals exposure and accelerated aging in the elderly. We performed a pilot study of 288 elderly participants aged 50-115 years and measured genome-wide DNA methylation and 22 blood metals concentrations. Measures of DNA methylation age were estimated using CpGs from Illumina HumanMethylation EPIC BeadChip. Linear mixed regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models were used to e…
