Synthesis of Fibrous Metal Adsorbent with a Piperazinyl-Dithiocarbamate Group by Radiation-Induced Grafting and Its Performance.

A fibrous grafted metal adsorbent with a piperazinyl-dithiocarbamate (PZ-DTC) group was synthesized by radiation-induced emulsion grafting of glycidyl methacrylate onto a polyethylene-coated polypropylene nonwoven fabric (PE/PP-NF) and subsequent three-step chemical modifications consisting of amination with N-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)piperazine (N-Boc-piperazine, NBPZ), deprotection of the Boc group with HCl, and dithiocarbamation with carbon disulfide (CS2). By using the NBPZ reagent in the amination step, the self-cross-linking of piperazine (PZ) could be completely suppressed, unlike using the

Activation of Metal Complexes With Ultrasound Waves for Targeted Anticancer Therapy.

Ultrasound technology has undergone a fundamental paradigm shift, evolving from a conventional diagnostic instrument into a sophisticated platform for non-invasive, site-specific cancer therapy. By harnessing the inverse piezoelectric effect, ultrasound generates mechanical waves that trigger acoustic cavitation in liquid media, producing localized hotspots of extreme temperature and pressure that can be exploited to activate rationally designed metal complexes through distinct and complementary mechanisms. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of two primary therapeutic modalities ena

Reversible Photoinduced Ligand Substitution in a Luminescent Chromium(0) Complex.

Light-triggered dissociation of ligands forms the basis for many compounds of interest for photoactivated chemotherapy (PACT), in which medicinally active substances are released or "uncaged" from metal complexes upon illumination. Photoinduced ligand dissociation is usually irreversible, and many recent studies performed in the context of PACT focused on ruthenium(II) polypyridines and related heavy metal complexes. Herein, we report a first-row transition metal complex, in which photoinduced dissociation and spontaneous recoordination of a ligand unit occurs. Two scorpionate-type tridentate

Hydrolysis enabled specific colorimetric assay of carbosulfan with sensitivity manipulation via metal-doped or metal-free carbon nanozyme.

Precise determination of the carbamate pesticide carbosulfan is crucial for assessing the associated risks in food and environment. Due to the strong interaction between carbosulfan and target enzyme, current methods primarily depend on the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition strategy, which generally lacks selectivity. In this study, we propose a nanozyme colorimetric sensor for the specific carbosulfan detection, based on its distinctive hydrolysis property. In contrast to other pesticides, carbosulfan can be hydrolyzed to produce the reductive sulfide compound by the cleavage of N-S bond

Metal-Mode-Controlled Ligand-to-Metal Charge Transfer in Isostructural One-Dimensional BODIPY MOFs and Photocatalytic H2O2 Production.

One-dimensional (1D) MOFs offer spatially confined pathways for rapid charge migration, minimizing the transport dispersion and junction resistance typical of multidirectional networks. This structural anisotropy offers an ideal platform for elucidating how distinct metal nodes and photoactive ligands modulate excited-state dynamics in photoactive MOFs. However, the active role of metal nodes as electronic modulators, rather than passive connectors, in chromophore-based 1D MOFs is yet to be elucidated. Herein, two isostructural boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY)-based Co-MOF and Cd-MOF were designe

Metal/metal oxide nanoparticles with antibacterial activity and their potential to disrupt bacterial biofilms: Recent advances with emphasis on the underlying mechanisms.

The rate of human mortality from infectious diseases caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a major public concern. Currently, the search for new strategies to treat infections and overcome antimicrobial resistance is a challenge. Nanoparticles (NPs) offer an alternative approach to biocide design that involves antibacterial mechanisms other than antibiotics. The attention is primarily attracted due to the large surface area, diverse physical and chemical properties, variety of precursor materials, and the ability to form hybrid structures. Of particular interest are metal and metal oxide

Red Light-Blue Light Chromoselective C(sp2)-X Bond Activation by Organic Helicenium-Based Photocatalysis.

Chromoselective bond activation has been achieved in organic helicenium (nPr-DMQA+)-based photoredox catalysis. Consequently, control over chromoselective C(sp2)-X bond activation in multihalogenated aromatics has been demonstrated. nPr-DMQA+ can only initiate the halogen atom transfer (XAT) pathway under red light irradiation to activate low-energy-accessible C(sp2)-I bonds. In contrast, blue light irradiation initiates consecutive photoinduced electron transfer (conPET) to activate more challenging C(sp2)-Br bonds. Comparative reaction outcomes have been demonstrated in the α-arylation of cy

Photothermally Activated Coacervate Model Protocells as Signal Transducers Endow Mammalian Cells with Light Sensitivity.

The development of a novel photothermally activated coacervate model protocell is reported as a signal transducer to endow mammalian cells with light sensitivity. In this system, near-infrared light irradiation triggers H2 S release in coacervate model protocells, leading to modulation of the behavior of living cells. The functional coacervate model protocells are prepared by loading metal-alloyed plasmonic nanoparticles and an H2 S donor into the liquid coacervate microdroplets. Upon light irradiation, the H2 S signal messenger is released through the photothermal effect of plasmonic nanopart

Nanotechnology for photodynamic therapy: a perspective from the Laboratory of Dr. Michael R. Hamblin in the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

The research interests of the Hamblin Laboratory are broadly centered on the use of different kinds of light to treat many different diseases. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) uses the combination of dyes with visible light to produce reactive oxygen species and kill bacteria, cancer cells and destroy unwanted tissue. Likewise, UV light is also good at killing especially pathogens. By contrast, red or near-infrared light can have the opposite effect, to act to preserve tissue from dying and can stimulate healing and regeneration. In all these applications, nanotechnology is having an ever-growing im

A mixed-method scoping review examining parental perspectives on heavy metal exposure in children.

BACKGROUND: Heavy metal exposure is a public health problem, especially in vulnerable populations such as children. A growing body of scholarly research sheds light on the issue of heavy metal exposure among children. However, there are still some gaps in the understanding of the full spectrum of factors that influence awareness and knowledge about the effects of heavy metals on children, especially in African countries. Children exposed to heavy metals primarily receive care from their parents. This scoping study aims to methodically map and synthesise the current literature on parental persp

Nanoclusters Embedded in Phthalocyanine Covalent Organic Polymer Enhance the Cycloaddition Reaction of Carbon Dioxide.

Photocatalytic cycloaddition of carbon dioxide and epoxides under mild conditions is important for green chemistry, while metal clusters loaded on a variety of carriers are widely used in energy and biology. However, under long-term illumination, the light stability of metal clusters at the carrier interface is poor, which usually leads to the loss of catalytic performance. Covalent organic polymers (COPs) with periodic and ultrasmall pore structures are ideal carriers for dispersing and stabilizing metal clusters. Through a simple nitrogen purge process, embedding Mn2Dy2 clusters on a hydroxy

Light-Assisted Ullmann Coupling of Phenols and Aryl Halides: The Synergetic Effect Between Plasmonic Copper Nanoparticles and Carbon Nanotubes from Various Sources.

Utilizing light and plastic wastes as resources to turn the wasted phenols and hazardous aryl halides into value added chemicals seems to be an attractive idea for alleviating the energy crisis and environmental problems. In this work, plasmonic copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) were loaded onto carbon nanotubes (CNTs) from various sources including commercial CNTs and those derived from plastic wastes. Under visible-light irradiation, the catalyst could efficiently convert phenols and aryl halides to diaryl ethers. Similar with commercial CNTs, excellent activity is also achieved when utilizing C

An automated illumination system for high-throughput photopharmacology studies: a case study of ROS-sensitive Zn- and Pd-phthalocyanine-loaded liposomes.

High-throughput approaches for studying light-activated compounds are in high demand in biomedical applications. In this work, we designed and validated a cost-effective illumination platform that is easy to fabricate, customizable, and suitable for high-throughput in vitro studies. We demonstrated the performance of our system using a comparative study of reactive oxygen species (ROS)-sensitive liposomes loaded with two structurally identical phthalocyanines differing in their central metal, namely zinc and palladium. We showed that our system allows screening of a large set of chemical param

Plasmon-induced transparency in metal-insulator-metal waveguide side-coupled with multiple cavities.

We have demonstrated the analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the metal-insulator-metal plasmonic waveguide, which consists of a bus waveguide side-coupled with a series of slot cavities. By finite-difference time-domain simulations, it is found that the resonance wavelength of the slot cavity can be controlled by adjusting the length of the cavity. Moreover, the EIT-like response is strongly dependent on the coupling separation between the corresponding adjacent cavities. Multiple-peak plasmon-induced transparency can be realized by cascading multiple cavities with di
