Strain-level characterization of health-associated bacterial consortia that colonize the human gut during infancy.

BACKGROUND: The human gut microbiome develops rapidly during infancy, a key window of development coinciding with maturation of the adaptive immune system. However, little is known of the microbiome growth dynamics over the first few months of life and whether there are any generalizable patterns across human populations. We performed metagenomic sequencing on stool samples (n=94) from a cohort of infants (n=15) at monthly intervals in the first six months of life, augmenting our dataset with seven published studies for a total of 4,441 metagenomes from 1,162 infants. RESULTS: Strain-level de

Yarrowia lipolytica and pollutants: Interactions and applications.

Yarrowia lipolytica is a dimorphic, non-pathogenic, ascomycetous yeast species with distinctive physiological features and biochemical characteristics that are significant in environment-related matters. Strains naturally present in soils, sea water, sediments and waste waters have inherent abilities to degrade hydrocarbons such as alkanes (short and medium chain) and aromatic compounds (biphenyl and dibenzofuran). With the application of slow release fertilizers, design of immobilization techniques and development of microbial consortia, scale-up studies and in situ applications have been pos…

Degradation of halogenated aliphatic compounds utilizing sequential anaerobic/aerobic treatments.

The objective of this research was to determine if either methanogenic or sulfidogenic reductive dechlorination could survive an alternating anaerobic/aerobic sequence to biologically transform halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons (HACs), specifically tetrachloroethylene (PCE), trichloroethylene (TCE), cis-1,2 dichloroethylene (cDCE), trans-1,2 dichloroethylene (tDCE), 1,1 dichloroethylene (1, 1DCE) and vinyl chloride (VC). This ability was considered to be a necessary prerequisite for complete anaerobic/aerobic mineralization of halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons by a single microbial consortia…

Community composition drives metabolic competition and Staphylococcus aureus colonization resistance in synthetic nasal communities.

The human nasal microbiome is a low-diversity ecosystem whose assembly principles and mechanisms of colonization resistance remain poorly understood. Staphylococcus aureus is a member of the nasal microbiome of some individuals with variable abundance. We hypothesized that nutritional competition, strain-level diversity, and nutrient availability shape community stability and the ability of commensal species to inhibit S. aureus. To test this, we constructed 50 defined synthetic communities inoculated with 5 to 10 representative human nasal bacterial species differing in strain and species com

Thermophilic compost bacteria as a promising approach for removal of diclofenac and related pharmaceuticals from wastewater.

Diclofenac, a widely used pharmaceutical, poses a significant environmental problem due to its persistence in aquatic systems and resistance to conventional degradation processes. Mesophilic microorganisms, commonly employed in wastewater treatment, often struggle to break down diclofenac, necessitating alternative approaches for its removal. In this study, we investigated thermophilic compost microorganisms and their ability to degrade diclofenac. Compost communities were cultivated for 20 weeks at 50 °C in a membrane bioreactor, with a continuous supply of 2 mg/L diclofenac as the sole carbo

The prestige oil spill. I. Biodegradation of a heavy fuel oil under simulated conditions.

In vitro biodegradation of the Prestige heavy fuel oil has been carried out using two microbial consortia obtained by enrichment in different substrates to simulate its environmental fate and potential utility for bioremediation. Different conditions, such as incubation time (i.e., 20 or 40 d), oil weathering, and addition of an oleophilic fertilizer (S200), were evaluated. Weathering slowed down the degradation of the fuel oil, probably because of the loss of lower and more labile components, but the addition of S200 enhanced significantly the extension of the biodegradation. n-Alkanes, alkyl…

Harnessing halophyte phytochemicals and biostimulants to enhance crop resilience under climate stress: a comprehensive review.

Global food security is increasingly compromised by the synergistic pressures of soil salinization and the climate-mediated proliferation of resilient agricultural pests and weeds. Halophytes, extremophile plants naturally adapted to high-salinity niches, represent an underexploited reservoir of bioactive compounds and microbial consortia with significant bioeconomic potential. This review synthesizes the multi-functional utility of halophyte-derived bioactive compounds in mitigating contemporary environmental stressors through two primary lenses. First, we discuss the biochemical efficacy of …

Iron oxide-mediated enhancement of extracellular electron transfer and symbiosis in consortium of electroactive bacteria and microalgae for wastewater treatment.

This study explores the role of α-Fe₂O₃ in improving extracellular electron transfer (EET) and symbiotic interactions between electroactive Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, its gene-deficient mutants (ΔmtrC, ΔomcA, and ΔcymA), and microalgae (Chlorella vulgaris). The iron oxide facilitates the efficient transfer of electrons generated by MR-1 to microalgal photosystem via the pathway of CymA-MtrC-OmcA to α-Fe₂O₃. This process enhances the removals of TOC, TN, and NH₄⁺-N in the MR-1 bacterial-algal consortium by 9.99%, 12.32%, and 52.25% respectively via OmcA regulation while boosting phosphorus rem

Copper in Wood Preservatives Delayed Wood Decomposition and Shifted Soil Fungal but Not Bacterial Community Composition.

Copper-based fungicides are routinely used for wood and plant protection, which can lead to an enrichment of copper-tolerant microbial communities in soil. To investigate the effect of such wood preservatives on the soil fungal and bacterial community compositions, five different vineyard and fruit-growing soil environments were evaluated using incubation studies over time. Pine sapwood specimens were impregnated with either water or different biocide treatment solutions containing a mixture of copper, triazoles, and quaternary ammonium compounds (CuTriQAC), a mixture of triazoles and quaterna

Diversity and biological activities of endophytic fungi associated with Catharanthus roseus.

BACKGROUND: The present study involves diversity and bioactivity of the endophytic fungal community from Catharanthus roseus inhabiting the coastal region. This study has been conducted hypothesizing that the microbial communities in the coastal regions would tolerate a range of abiotic stress such as salinity, humidity, temperature and soil composition, and it may produce new metabolites, which may possess bioactive property. Therefore in the current study, the cytotoxicity and free radical scavenging potential of the fungal organic extracts have been investigated. Moreover, the apoptotic and

Niche differentiation of bacterial communities at a millimeter scale in Shark Bay microbial mats.

Modern microbial mats can provide key insights into early Earth ecosystems, and Shark Bay, Australia, holds one of the best examples of these systems. Identifying the spatial distribution of microorganisms with mat depth facilitates a greater understanding of specific niches and potentially novel microbial interactions. High throughput sequencing coupled with elemental analyses and biogeochemical measurements of two distinct mat types (smooth and pustular) at a millimeter scale were undertaken in the present study. A total of 8,263,982 16S rRNA gene sequences were obtained, which were affiliat

Unlocking the transcriptional profiles of an oily waste-degrading bacterial consortium.

This study investigates the transcriptional profile of a novel oil-degrading microbial consortium (MC1) composed of four bacterial isolates from Brazilian oil reservoirs: Acinetobacter baumannii subsp. oleum ficedula, Bacillus velezensis, Enterobacter asburiae, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Genomic analysis revealed an enrichment of genes associated with xenobiotic degradation, particularly for aminobenzoate, atrazine, and aromatic compounds, compared to reference genomes. The consortium demonstrated superior growth and complete oil degradation relative to individual strains. Transcriptional prof

Enhanced and Balanced Microalgal Wastewater Treatment (COD, N, and P) by Interval Inoculation of Activated Sludge.

Although chemical oxygen demand (COD) is an important issue for wastewater treatment, COD reduction with microalgae has been less studied compared to nitrogen or phosphorus removal. COD removal is not efficient in conventional wastewater treatment using microalgae, because the algae release organic compounds, thereby finally increasing the COD level. This study focused on enhancing COD removal and meeting the effluent standard for discharge by optimizing sludge inoculation timing, which was an important factor in forming a desirable algae/bacteria consortium for more efficient COD removal and

1,4-Dioxane-degrading consortia can be enriched from uncontaminated soils: prevalence of Mycobacterium and soluble di-iron monooxygenase genes.

Two bacterial consortia were enriched from uncontaminated soil by virtue of their ability to grow on 1,4-dioxane (dioxane) as a sole carbon and energy source. Their specific dioxane degradation rates at 30°C, pH = 7 (i.e. 5.7 to 7.1 g-dioxane per g-protein per day) were comparable to those of two dioxane-metabolizing archetypes: Pseudonocardia dioxanivoransCB1190 and Mycobacterium dioxanotrophicusPH-06. Based on 16S rRNA sequencing, Mycobacterium was the dominant genus. Acetylene inhibition tests suggest that dioxane degradation was mediated by monooxygenases. However, qPCR analyses targeting
